What if at all do you have to do to break them in? And what happens if you dont do it? and how long does it take? Thanks

Just play them, they'll get there.

There is no hard and fast rule. F1 is right ... just give them some serious play time and they will get there.

These are the steps that I took to break-in my RTi8's the right way:
-Make Jack and Coke
-Kick off my shoes
-Planted my behind
-Layed back and let the tunes play
In all seriousness, just don't push them too hard right away.

+1 to all the above. Save any serious listening for about 30 days--tweeters will smooth out, and bass will probably increase slightly as surrounds loosen. You notice it more with some speakers than others. My Athenas definitely gained noticeable bass after about a month, my Energy's, not so much.

For break-in, I usually do about 25% pink noise and 75% music; and I try to let the speakers run for at least a week straight. That is my recipe for success, but they will also just break in on their own as mentioned.

To break in a woofer for spec testing, I use a 20-30 Hz tone at moderate volume for hours on end.
To break in a speaker, I would just push them hard enough at first and cut the treble back a few dB for the first day or two. Harsh highs kill me.
