I'm currently using an AVR with pre outs to external amps but I would like to use a 2 channel pre amp just for music listening without the need to manually swap the cables that run to the amp each time. Would I be able to run the pre outs for the fronts of the AVR as well as the output from the pre amp to some sort of a switchbox that runs to the amp? I was thinking something like this might work - http://www.nilesaudio.com/product.php?prodID=PS-1&recordID=Source%20Switching%20Systems&categoryID=Automated%20Switching%20Systems&catcdID=10&prdcdID=FG00012. Any chance that could impact SQ?
Thanks.
I would love to get something like that too, but I'm not sure of the quality of the switch mechanism.
Here's a pic of the back.

Would a passive pre work for you? I would imagine you'd be able to hook up your receiver to one of the inputs. I may be taking this route soon.

Ideally what you want is a 2-channel preamp that has an HT Bypass feature. Essentially what that allows you to do is bypass your AVR when listening to music, and when listening to HT the signal will be routed from the AVR, through the preamp's bypass, and out to your speakers. It's the best of both worlds and it allows you to choose a preamp tailored to your tastes.
As to your question, I don't know if that switch would affect sound quality or not, but I would be worried that it would.

That's interesting. I've never seen one of those before. Not as cheap as I would have thought at almost $392 but probably deserves some more research. Thanks for the link.

Yes I am familiar with the HT bypass and agree that would probably be the best solution. However do you know of any for less than a grand that are tube based?
