Around 1970-71:

Concord Receiver- I can't even find any info on this now but Concord Electronics made some gear in the 60s and early 70s. It drove my speakers pretty loud.

AR-4X speakers (not AR's top of the line speakers but not too bad)

Benjamin-Miracord 50HII turntable (probably the best peice of gear I owned at that time)

8 Track player/recorder (RCA or Realistic - I can't remember) - not hifi but I had to have tunes for the car. I made a lot of copies off of vinyl.

1978, I got my first compact stereo; turntable, cassette, **8-track**, tuner.

1980, built a pair of speakers (12" woofers, 1" domes). Connected the compact stereo through an old tube amp borrowed from a friend to drive the speakers. Used the speakers from the compact set for my first "surround" sound by connecting them to both + terminals on the amp (simple matrix).

1981: first real stereo
Sansui 3900Z receiver
Sony TC-FX5C cassette.. one of the first with Dolby C
Technics turntable with Shure cartridge

1983 I swapped the Sony deck for a 3-head Aiwa and swapped the turntable for a linear tracking p-mount. Next, bought some Cerwin Vega 8" 2-ways. That was my college rig, sold the entire thing kit'n'kabootle in 1989 just before graduation and sank every dollar into an Onkyo receiver (great deal, I worked at BB video rental and got employee discount). That receiver died last year.

1990: bought my first Polks.. Monitor 7Cs that are still my main speakers.

My first system was a Lafayette RK-850 8-track/amplifier with a Pioneer turntable and Pickering cartridge. Lafayette Critererian speakers. Very fine starter system at the time! The next system was the Lafayette LR9090 AM/FM receiver and some decent large speakers. I forget the name of them. After that it was a large set of separate amps with enough power to light up a stadium but I've backed away from that and am more interested in tubes at this time.

My very first monster stereo was bought new in 1978.i bought it from lafayette
When i was 22--there was nothing like black sabbath and a joint on a huge stereo (remember this was the 70's.)
My first one was a Kenwood KR-4070-(40 watts per channel receiver.with a Sharp RT-1157 Cassette deck (the first one with an automatic peogram search system--APSS) and a Kenwood turntable with a limestone and concrete cabinet with direct drive and a negatron cartrige..The speakers were the pioneer HPM-100's (with the 12 inch woofers) backed up by a set of BIC VENTURI's (12inch)--The pioneers had good bass but those BIC's were an exceptionel set of speakers and i truly wish they would come out with an updated set of those..
I can remember playing Fleetwood Mac's Say You Love Me" and the bass literally knocking the pictures off the neighbors wall in the duplex next door---oh what fun... Boy did i thinki rally had something but it wasn't s___ compaired to what i have now...:-)

Russ, the new surround SACD rerelease of those records is very good, or so I hear. The Stereophile review says you can hear vast amounts of sonic detail lacking in the vinyl originals. They made sure to use the master tapes, which were discovered in mint condition in an abandoned warehouse.:p

I hate to point this out, but that's not stereo.... unless, of course, you had the rare dual voice coil 3 inch driver... still, you said you had the mono cartridge (not much more than a bent pin scratching on the groove, no?)

Just a random thought that popped into my head from my childhood. I had a plastic 'Firemans helmet' as a very young lad. I'd set that bad boy upside down in the corner of my room and pee in it, then dump it out in said corner and play fireman some more.

Fun question. Lezz see if I can remember. It would have been about 1970, and I bought a system from Jonas Miller Stereo in Beverly Hills, Calif.

as memory serves, the nut of it was a Harman-Kardon receiver (probably 10-15 watts). This guy was a war horse; many years later I gave it to my brother-in-law, and he used it for years and years in his garage.

the turntable was a Garrard Syncro-Lab (might have been a 72) with a Shure M44-E cartridge.

The speakers were made in the store. They started with single, 12-inch, full-range drivers to which they added a horn tweeter.

I soon added a Sony open-reel tape deck, and that was it.

Like Russ I had a few of those record players. Graduated to a couple of different in home 8 tracks. One was a quad 8 track unit.

Then in 1972 I bought a new Sony intergrated amp, about 60 to 80 wpc, a Sony turntable, and a pair of EPI 202s. Sometime during that year I bought a Teac 4070G reel to reel. That all made a pretty nice system. About 4 or 5 years later I upgraded all but the reel. The reel lasted through several upgrades until a few years ago when it had a major meltdown. That was like losing an old friend. A sad day, but I sure got my moneys worth out of that Teac.

I think I'm starting to see a pattern here :D

My first rig was a 20 watt Lafayette amplifier with 8 track and a Garrard turntable, later updated with a Pioneer turntable. For speakers I had Lafayette Criterion 2x book shelf speakers. Never blew them up and I was only 12 at the time.

Mid 70's
Magnavox Console stereo/end tables. One octagonal (I think, maybe hexagonal) end table housed the 20w/ch tuner/amp/turntable and 8 track with speakers.
The other end table was storage for records and housed the other speakers.

That was actually my parents' system. I got my first in the early 80's, a Fisher rack system. I killed it my freshman year of college.

Circa 1987 my college rig and first "real" stereo besides a boombox:

Harmon Kardon two channel receiver (bought from a butcher at the grocery store I worked in for extra money. Left channel was blown and I had to repair it. This receiver had a bronzed grey finish to it and was the first digital tuner receiver that H/K made (or at least that is what I was told). Don't remember the model number but it was like 55 watts/channel. $50 plus about $80 for the repair.

JBL J325A three way speakers (bought these used from an audio flea market store). Perfect working condition but grill pegs were in bad shape. $200

Magnovox single disk cd player (why Magnovox? Phillips invented the cd player). Bought this new and was kind of expensive at the time.

Technics tape deck. This one had the 20 - 19K spec in dbx mode. Had Dolby B & C as well.

Sub was a custom built box that weighed over 100 lbs. Two 15 inch Rockford Fosgate 4 ohm speakers that were wired internally in series to make an 8 ohm speaker. Passive crossover was "robbed" from a busted Boston Acoustics 10 inch sub. No amp on the sub.

The H/K ran the JBL's on the 'A' speaker select and the sub was wired up to the 'B' speaker select. I used to play it pretty loud at parties in college and everyone was amazed by the sub. The H/K only shut down after many hours at 1:00 on the volume knob. This was resolved by placing a big ass fan directly on top of the receiver.

Back then car subs were just getting started. Home subs were very uncommon (or at least I didn't see many). I thought it was cool to have a sub for a two channel rig. Over time my thirst for bass kind of went away (after college); I thought I had outgrown it now that I was more mature. Couldn't have been more mistaken!

edit: forgot one piece. Rotel turntable which I still have but don't use. I have only about 10 LPs.

I just realised that I never actually posted my specs. Well, I started out with my dad's old Realistic integrated amp/tuner/tt with some crappy 2 ways that buzzed and rattled if you turned it up too loud (the cabs, not the drivers).

Then, I upgraded to a speaker box out of my brother's car, driven by my JVC amp. Had 2 Pioneer 12" subs, 2 pioneer 6 1/4" mids and 2 Optimus horn tweeters. Was loud, but not pretty :-)

And then, everything changed when I got my Polks. I would consider that to be my first *true* 2ch rig. You can see the specs in my system showcase. It hasn't really changed except for the addition of peripheral gear. All my rigs have been hooked up to my computer as the main source.....

1981 All Sony system with Turntable, Receiver Speakers & Cabinet. I added a Realistic Tape deck. A few years later I upgraded to a newer Sony Receiver

2-6-90 I got a Rotel Amp, Pre-Amp/tuner, 855 cd player, Onkyo Tape deck & my Polk Speakers.

From there I upgraded to what I have now. As you can see I kept the turntable, cd player, tape deck & speakers

found this old thread, figured I'd put my history in.

First rig I had was a Heathkit reciever my dad had built and some Radio Shack speakers with oval full range drivers.

1986: First system I paid for:
Kenwood KA-54 Integrated Amp- Still own, but it doesn't work very well
Kenwood KT45 Tuner- still works fine
Sharp CD player
old Panasonic portable stereo tape deck- got it from my brother. I didn't think much of it until I realized that having level controls is a good thing.
The speakers I made my myself. 8 in woofers but with dual chambers and dual ports made them have decent bass. Unfinished particle board looks pretty ugly though.

2 of my brothers had Pioneer SX series receivers from the 70s

1989: NAD 3300 Integrated amp
Onkyo Cassette deck
NAD 4225 Tuner
used Rotel turntable
Boston Acoustics A60s- looking back I probably should have sprung the extra bucks for ADS L690s or Dahlquist DQM9s
JBL Dolby PL add on device- cheap Radio Shack surround speakers

around 1998 or so I bought an Onkyo 5 channel receiver and a Sony DD decoder. It worked with both my Laserdisc player (1995) and my DVD player.

Bought my Sony STR-DE985 in 2002 along with Polk Rti38s and a Sony SACD/DVD carousel player.

My first "HI-FI" rig:

1. Pioneer SX-780 Receiver
2. Pioneer CTF-500 Cassette Deck
3. Pioneer PL-512 Turntable
4. Pioneer HPM 40 speakers

My first "decent" stereo was a Fisher combo unit that had a receiver with a turntable on top. The speakers were pretty impressive, 2-way in a very heavy and fairly large cabinets for the time. This system was technically not "hi-fi" though. That was about, oh....1973. The Pioneer setup above came in 1975/76 as I had my first full-time job.

After a series of Motorola combination 8 track/turntable/receiver units, my first real stereo system was partially salvaged from a local small town theater that was being remodeled into a bank. Consisted of:

2 Bogen tube mono amps. These had kind of a copper colored metal that had the inputs and controls and then a matte black mesh top screen that you could see the tubes thru. Not sure how much wattage they are, but they still sound good (see below!)

2 ElectroVoice theater speakers with dual 16" drivers and dual horns, these are mounted in huge wood cabinets that are wedge shaped so that the drivers are in a configuration like an FXi30, but a shallower angle.

The requisite Garrard turntable and Shure cartridge.

Used a Motorola receiver with tape-out to drive the Bogen amps as the amps only have 1 input.

I still have the Bogen amps, with tubes replaced a few years ago and the volume controls cleaned up as they were causing a lot of fuzzy sound when adjusted. The Bogen amps drive a set of vintage ESS AMT 1B speakers with the Heil Air Motion Transformers. Sounds very sweet and I would rather listen to this combo. than my SDA SRS's (let the flames begin! I love Polk speakers but there is other life out there!). The ElectroVoice speakers are out in my machine shed, the surrounds and cones on the 16" drivers just finally disintigrated with age. When driven by a couple of Phase Linear 400B's, they could really rock a party when I was a teenager!

Early 80's, Marantz 1060, Pioneer 2 ways, and used the turntable through tape out from a Sears all in one unit with cassette receiver and turntable. Still miss that 1060, but I pawned it when the power switch broke...........didn't they all? Then "upgraded" to a HK 570i receiver, Cerwin Vega D-3's, Akai DD turntable, and Technics deck with DBX.......The HK's 45wpc ran those Cerwins pretty well for parties etc.

1)Pioneer vsx-4400 (still have it and turn it on sometimes)
2)pair of Scott speakers (8" bookshelf)
3)Sony dual tape deck
4)Pioneer cd player w/ 4times overampling
5) Sansui equalizer

I also had a radio shack power meter. It had red leds that measure wattage output. It went up to 200 watts.

Though I amassed a quite a bit of gear in my first year of being into audio, I would have to say my first real stereo system consisted of:

A Proton av-445 Receiver
a Sony 5 CD Changer
and a pair of Monitor 5's.

It's gone through a few changes though, with the same speakers and CD player hooked up to a Carver HR-795 receiver at the moment. I am more than happy with it for a bedroom system.

i always wanted to try proton but it just never worked out that way. i'll bet you had a pretty good thing going on there. yesterday i saw a used proton amp in the bin that made me ache,.. i missed again, cash had to go to a dvd/dvd-a player.

anyway, early 80's:
pioneer int. amp a-8, f-7 tuner, ct-8r tape
denon dp-60l turntable
shure V15, can't remember, type IV or V
kenwood eq, adc frequency spectrum analyzer
dbx 3bx dynamic range expander
jbl r-103 speaks
oh yeah, ar cordless remote control. way cool in those days.

Oh this is cool...

Ok, I had some late 70's pioneer silver faced model (I forget the exact models) components, tape deck, turntable, and speakers (that I refoamed myself as a kid), with a late 80's pioneer receiver to connect it all to. I put a lot of work into restoring the speakers and the tape deck... and this was all when I was around ~8 years old on. My friends all made fun of me for not having a SeeDee player... I kept trying to show them how awsome my YES albums were... oh well.

I could not save the vintage pioneer tuner... I think it was the coolest component of the whole set, but as a kid, I just didn't have knowledge to fix it... The reciever had a digital one and I never considered the radio to be hifi until I discovered all the public and university stations here. I now have a 70's Sansui tuner hooked to my modern stuff. I guess things are cyclical sometimes. I still have the turntable. It is the only thing I kept from that old rig. I tried to fix it up, rewired some of it for a better power cord, gave it a fresh grado cartridge and it still sounds pretty good. I need to pull it out one of these days.

Wow, this is kinda funny. I was looking at my old pictures recently and found one of my systems from 10 years ago:

I bought most of it at once:

Sony 53" TV (new)
Polk C350 (open box)
Polk rt12 (open box)
Energy sub (open box)
Polk surround (forgot model but they were small and white)

Kenwood AVR (one of the first 5.1 channel with DD and DTS
Kenwood 200 Disk CD changer (could do DTS disks)
Sony DVD player of some type
Something Else, don’t remember.

HTPC Back then I would actually experiment with an HTPC back when I bet 99.9% of AV people had no idea how to connect a PC to a system. I would put my new P3 450 system next to the TV and plug it in by S-Video and dink around.

http://www.silverti.com/ht/HT-%201998.jpg

I was only 24-25 at the time. It was my first component system of my own. I always had a lto of AV equipment even before moving into my first house as seen in the picture. But this was the first real system.

I think I dropped about $6000 on it total and it about killed me (couldn’t afford it very well).

Funny thing is that this thing rocked people. Most people I knew didn’t know HT systems could be so loud back then around here.

You know, my dad still has the stereo system that inspired my love of music. It was from at least 1975. I remember in the late 1970's (me being 5 to 7 years old) putting in the BG's 8 track into it and cranking it. Was silver with knobs and such. I’m going to see if he still has that thing.

The poor college kid system circ 1980.

A used h/k 330c (still have it), a used Kenwood TT (still in in folk's attic), and a pair of store brand speakers (the ones I wanted were sold out and on backorder...18 year old kids have no patience).

I should have waited, I was stuck with those #$&% speakers for years. My taste in speakers continually outpaced my budget to buy them. I replaced them with a pair of Maggie 2.5Rs.

Kinda interesting that Lasareth "started" (impressive start) with the CRS+ and after 35ish years of various models they are now my "final" (I know, I know, nothing is ever "final" in this field) speaker in my main system. What a great speaker and perfect for my room layout and WAF.

So.. a four-year-old thread, resurrected. It's a miracle!

First hi-fi wasn't a stereo, but it sounded pretty good. From my later high school days (ca. 1975)

EICO HF-52 mono integrated amp (push-pull EL34)
1957 VM record changer fitted with BOTL Pickering conical MM cartridge (upgraded to a used Philips GA-308 tt when I had a little $)
Electrovoice "Wolverine" LS-12 in home-made BR enclosure.
mid-1970's era transistor VM AM-FM stereo tuner.

First stereo (purchased piecemeal in college between '77 and '80)

Yamaha CA-610II integrated amplifier
Philips AF-877 tt with Grado F1+ MI cartridge
Polk Monitor 7A speakers
Yamaha T-550 AM/FM stereo tuner
(Polk LF-14 subwoofer, too!)

Still have, and use, all of the college-era stuff listed (well... the subwoofer's in the basement, gathering dust)

Aloha Yashu. Yeah, I really like the performance of my NS10's. 2 versions were made of these monitors. I own the older verticle standing model. In sound they really complimented those old 301's. The newer series 301's don't compare to the older series 1 IMO. At present, I got my Yammies married up with a pair of RTi6's. The clarity/detail is incredible since I usually run both simultaniously from a Yamaha RX-797 2 channel receiver. I really wanted a pair of the NS2000's at the time I bought the NS10's but they were in the ballpark of almost 6K. Too bad Yamaha has dicontinued making both of these models. Excellent speakers from an era long gone.

Akai receiver, TT and 2 speakers. Probably back in the late 70's. A guy who lived in the same building as I did at the time needed the money. The system was 2 months old and he even had the BOS. If I remember correctly, the price I paid was $300 and I think he paid over $600. I am sure the money went to some good drugs.

My first system consisted of:
-Garrad Turntable/changer with mid line Shure cartridge (hand me down from my dad),
-JVC cassete deck - cheaply made but recorded and played back very musical tapes
-H.H. Scott tube receiver - pretty good (hand me down from my dad),
-H.H. Scott two-way ported speakers, gorgeous cherry veneer and particle board cabinets with retro styling but speakers were mounted behind front baffle and fired through holes cut in the thick wood - sounded pretty bad, like they were being played through a tunnel, (hand me down from my brother)
-cables by Radio Shack.

I still have the speakers because the Cabinets look so cool. They have been converted to acoustic suspension design and completely rebuilt at least three times including new crossovers, drivers, and moving drivers to front of baffle. Only problem is that cabinets are not up to todays design and construction stds., and even with one inch thick sides, they still get just a touch wooley when the volume is turned up.

I wish I still had the tube receiver!

Akai reel to reel
Cerwin Vega D-7's in front
Design Acoustics PS-10's in the rear
Self built 15" subwoofer ( Term subwoofer hadnt even been coined yet )
with a Cerwin Vega driver ( 4 cubic ft ported box tuned to 30Hz with a small red radio shack book called Building speaker enclosures by David Weems )
Technics receiver driving fronts
Sherwood receiver driving rears
Technics Turntable with a Shure V15 phono cartridge
Panasonic Hi-Fi VHS
HUGE ( :) ) 27" JVC Monitor
Self made Hafler amp for the Cerwin Vega "sub"
Akai cassette deck bought at Pacific stereo super high end capable of using chrome/metal cassette tapes :)

And probably a bunch of stuff I am forgetting....but friends from all over town would come to listen to the stereo and watch my " Home Theatre" with the huge 27" screen. The 27" monitor was actually mounted on top of the cerwin vega sub ( Painted gloss black ) ...I had my dad weld me a cage for inside the sub to magnetically shield it...and rubber mounts under the 27" for vibration dampening.

The bass was amazing with the 2 12" woofers in the cerwin vegas...15" cerwin vega driven by the Hafler amp ...and the down firing 10" woofers in the design acoustic PS-10's....it was a great time in the early to mid 80's

around 1973 - 74: a Marantz model 4245 receiver with a built in tuneable Dolby unit, a Marantz cassette deck from the same series as the receiver. I can't recall the model number but it was over $500.00 back then. (I had an Akai cassette deck that had a glass/ferrite head that I had to have replaced twice at $150.00 a pop. The third time it failed I threw it out and bought the Marantz) The speakers were a pair of ESP Studio Monitors which was a hot brand back then for those who liked their music LOUD!! The turntable was a direct drive Pioneer PL1 fully manual unit with a Shure cartridge. The system was stolen about 6 months after I had it.   Even with the insurance money I couldn't afford to replace it with the same quality gear because I borrowed money to buy it in the first place. :( I bought a Pioneer receiver that was 125 watts per channel. I don't remember the model, possibly an SX125 or something like that. It was on the low end of their premium product line I think. I replaced the turntable with a Pioneer PL2 semi automatic unit and the speakers were replaced with a pair BIC Venturi 6 models. It wasn't half the stereo system the Marantz system was.

NAD stereo integrated amplifier and Cabasse Goëlette 301s (that's a French made speaker, that competes with Focal JMLab, and has just recently been bought by ... Canon ... of all people!).

The amp: http://207.228.230.231/info/NAD_C340.pdf
The speakers: http://www.cabasse.com/us/ (the specific speaker page is no longer available)

I had these in a large room, with a BIG marble fireplace, high ceilings (about 12'), two floor to ceiling windows on one wall, and floor to ceiling oak panels on another wall. The sound was incredible, and I never did get past the 12 o' clock position on the analog volume control. Mostly, listening was between 9 o' clock and 11 o' clock and very loud. Some favorite stuff was Moby, Hotel Costes and Mozart's Requiem (and others).

The quality of finish on the speakers was truly excellent, in real Bubinga wood.

I still have these stored at a friend's house, but they are too far away for me to "visit".

circa 1979: Polk Model 10s, Advent Receiver, Dual turntable, SpectroAcoustics 180 wpc amp, ADC soundshaper equalizer.

I switched from turntable to Sony ES series CD player around 1990. However, my college-age son is still angry I threw out about 300 vinyl recordings in 2002.

That rig kept me very happy with 2-channel for 28 years. The Model 10s have excellent midrange and the equalizer increased the bass enough so the 10 inch passive radiator did the job.

What finally ended it was replacing blowing the tweeter about the 5th or 6th time, and a second failure in 5 years of the power amp. The dual turntable had also stopped working, and the equalizer had 2 repairs in the last 5 years as well.

That is one reason I have simplified my system: One receiver to do everything - Outlaw RR2150, plus a CD player, Polk Monitor 70s, and an Epik Valor sub. Oh, and another system in my bedroom - Monitor 60s, Velodyne sub, HK 3490 receiver, and Marantz CD player.
