Today I was helping the X cutting down another tree. That all went well, but the brush fire didn't. I started one fire no problem, but the second didn't go so well. I have started many fires before with gas with no problems, but this time I got burned. I drove to the ER, and I shouldn't have. I felt like passing out. I lost a fair amount of skin on my right arm, and hand. I toughed it out for a while, but it got bad. I broke my back, and neck before, but burns really suck! They wanted me to go to the burn unit in ATL, but I was not into that. The scrubbing was not bad compared to the friggen pain in my hand. I now fully feel for those kids that get burnt do to stupidity of parents using front burners on a stove.

I set myself on fire.
Just playin round with some gas.
My baby left me
. . . and I want to beat someone's ass!
So, I started a fire. . .
Just thought it'd be fun.
Cleanin' up ma' forest.
Cause motha' nata can't get her **** done.
No one was around.
Up in my Georgia hills
Got no money for Diesel,
No kerosene from my grills.
My woman took my smokes.
She took my bourbon glass
Just left me this red can
With a note, saying, "lazy, No class."
So I sat down next to
This big ol' pine tree
struck a book a matches
let that motha' burn free.
I got no reason
No reason to live anymore
But before I go
takin her house wit me fo' shore

Nothing perm but scares. I have to type lefty, but it hurts like a mofo. While I was in the hospital I saw much worse. Kinda made me feel bad about whining for more ice. I was going nutz there in pain. There was a little girl there for reasons unknown, but I ventured over to see if I could help calm her down. I should donate a little time like I used to. People have some real tough stuff to go through, and need prayer. The last few years I have been slipping with my duties, and this was just another slap in the face that I need to get back on track.

Here's hoping for a quick recovery. We've all done stupid things before... and we've all done things we know we shouldn't, but "get away with" anyway. And for that, I won't scold you on the gas :p
Hopefully the scarring won't limit the movement of your hand after it's all healed up.
My own story with gas... I was trying to light a brush fire on a rainy day with gas... tried several times and couldn't get it to light. Stuck around a bit, saw no more smoke, so I went inside to get dried off (it was raining pretty good). A few (maybe 15 or 20) minutes later, I look out to see a out-of-control brushfire going on! Seems that there was some straw hiding out down underneath some other stuff, which caught after I left (must've been smouldering ever so slightly). Luckily, there was a water supply and buckets nearby, so I got everything under control before it burnt down the wood fence that was nearby :). Blistered the paint on it, tho.

There's a safety video that I pushed the Safety Department at work to get called, "Remember Charlie".
http://www.safetyvideosnow.com/Remember_Charlie_Safety_Video_p/pt1.htm
(link has a very short preview)
It deals with a dude named Charlie Morecraft who was involved in a fire at an oil refinery.
Long story short: as Charlie himself tells the story, it was a fire that was a result of his own doing.
Best safety video I've ever seen.
One of the MAJOR points that Charlie himself points out is that while the fire that burned 45% of his body definitely hurt him, it also hurt those around him.
His dad had a heart attack and died in the parking lot of the hospital after seeing his son in the emergency room the day of the fire.
His mother, who was at his side every day he was in the hospital, withered away.
He and his wife divorced.
His oldest daughter, a straight A student all her life, had her grades plummet after the accident. She attempted suicide.
....and, as Charlie himself told the story (and courageously told on himself, too), it went on and on and on.
My point ?
We all take shortcuts, we all have attacks of "It won't happen to me".
But we all have to remember: our actions don't just affect us.
They sometimes impact those around us more severely.
So Ben, get better. Soon !
And get better at starting fires soon, too !
You have kids counting on you.
P.S. the pain, while bad, will pass sooner than you think.

I have to go back tomorrow to get my dressing changed. I will mention my sickness. The pain was causing a lot of nausea too. I am usually the last guy to go get medical attention, but the pain was just too much. I really should not have driven to the ER.

Pain from burns is unlike any other kind of pain--Most of our pain sensation is more recently evolved, and is processed in a different part of the brain. Burns strike at nerves in the part of our brain that's responsible for emotions, which is why you feel so effin' aggravated/emotional when you get burnt. Probably why your meds can't kill off the pain too.
Sorry for the lecture, I'm probably just trying to justify the years spent getting my psychology degree. :)

Dang Ben-Doesn't seem to be anything else that needs to be said-
Get well soon, and be careful with the solder irons now.
I used to think ambulances were for only the sickest of the sick, but after running ambulance calls with the fire dept for a few years and seeing some of the BS reasons people call the ambulance-I don't hesitate when somebody I know should seek medical attention. Besides its almost a ticket right into the ER bypassing the waiting room (depends on your priority and how busy the ER is of course, but it usually does help).
I mean one time we transported a girl to the hospital because she had some minor stomach cramps-the real reason was she didn't want to work (cleaning lady) that night for her demanding employer. There are people that were involved in bad accidents I mean involving rollover, etc), but would refuse to go to get checked out-its nuts.
Another good reason not to drive yourself, is as you mentioned-its a safety issue-if you pass out before you get there (whatever the reason for driving to the ER is), well that could be pretty bad.
Again-get well soon-Peace.

I know exactly how you fell bro. I had a half pound of black power ignite 1' from my face, it liquefied the flesh on my face and burned off every last hair on my face, everything was gone. even worse was the debriding (removing dead skin and tissue from the burned area). Nurse would roll up a towel and tell me to bit on it and scream if I wanted to.....2 weeks of pure hell...........

No popping. Had to cut them off with scissors, and peel/trim the skin back a bit. I have to take my daughter to school at 7am. I can't take any meds till I get back:( All that freshly removed flesh is stinging a bit now. Somehow I have to get to PT to do a whirlpool thing, and have them scrape the rest of the loose skin off. Well went back in for a dressing change/checkup. It still looks good. No infection. The nurses like to take their time pulling the dressing off. I took over, and had them off asap. A big chunk of skin came off. I still have a bunch more to remove. Tuesday is the fun day where I get to soak my arm in a whirlpool, and after the soak I get the big scrub. Not really looking forward to it. I am leaking pretty bad as it is. The yellow pus, and now blood is going through my wrappings pretty bad. I was going to take a vid of me squeezing out the juice in the morning, but I think that is just a little too much. The original doctor that saw me first was there today, and she was surprised I hadn't used up all my pills yet. I got the lecture again today that I have to go to PT.
Edit: What should I do for scaring. I used to use vitamin-E for wounds, but this is pretty good sized.

to minimize scars.. you may have to wear compression dressing once a lot more healing takes place.. what they look like are tan colored grandma stockings.. but fit very tight against your skin to keep the scars from being raised. I had to wear some for 6 month's
Ben, take your pills.. and I feel for you when it's bath and scrub time.. that isn't going to be any fun. :(
and yes get your ass to PT!! in my case I was lectured over and over about it too.. it's not that I didn't want to go. it's that the first days and weeks/month's after burns are the most critical.. not only because infection can set it.. but because to regain 100% use of your hand or arm you need to go to PT and not miss any sessions.
My injuries were so severe that I no longer knew how to use eating utensils. They/I had to teach my brain again how to use a fork and spoon and easy tasks like that we take for granted. I was able to get back 98% or my use/strength of my hands and arms, due to PT and the awesome nurses I had. If for no other reason, do it for your kids.
Good luck!

Good thing I don't bath much:eek: I am glad I have a sense of humor, and it will be tested in the next month or so. I don't have any sort of insurance so I know I will have to push myself at home to keep the functionality there. I try to flex my wrist and finger to keep mobility going. Taking a shower after a bad sunburn can suck so I can only imagine what you went through Al:( I am so glad it didn't get to 3rd degree. On a serious note please pray for me to have patience with the kids, or an other situations. I think its going to get worse before it gets better. I hope people have a little patience if I snap a little. I am pretty good about that, but I have already had one person here take a shot at me knowing what I was going through:confused:

I went through something similiar when I was 12. Had 2nd degree burns from my elbows to my neck on both shoulders. Yeah a real bad sunburn lemme tell you. The doctors removed the skin (its been almost 20 years so I may not remember things exactly) with a metal pad that reminded me of a brillo pad. Sorry Im not trying to scare ya here. And to this day Ive never felt anything close. :(
BUT, there is a good side to the bridling. After it was done and washed and before they wrapped me up in lbs of gauze, they put a white cream on my arms/neck called Silver Sulfate (iirc) and holy **** it was like heaven. It really took all the pain away, until I bumped into something like an ass and I saw sparkles of pain in my vision. The only problem with the Silver cream was it got a bit pasty and dry about the time i had to change the bandaging, and that was a blast lemme tell ya. But as soon as it was all cleaned again and the cream applied it was great.
I didnt have much trouble with scarring, probably because of my age at the time, but there is definitely a difference in texture to the skin.
Sorry this happened to ya Ben and I wish ya a speedy recovery.

It has been bugging me that many times I have started fires using the same method with no problems. Well I did everything the same, but the pile wasn't the same. This time there were a lot of leaves, and sticks that were kinda in layers. What happened is the fumes built up in the pile, and that caused it to explode instead of the usual poof/flame ball. My X was in her house with all the windows closed, and she heard it. Immediately she was outside asking if I was OK. Gas can be relatively safe for starting a fire outdoors, but if the fumes get trapped anywhere it does explode;) When I relight it I am going to use diesel, and toss a little torch instead just using a lighter.

With leaves and sticks - how about you just stick with a match and skip the bonus flammable stuff??? I may still need you to look at my amp sometime and would like you to be around to do it....
Get well soon,

The leaves, and sticks were in the burn pile as some of the stuff to get rid of. With a match I would have still been burned. At least with the lighter I was close to the ground. If I was standing it would have been real bad! I won't be doing any amps soon. I had to pick up my laser printer. It hurts just to have my hand not elevated, and the printer was on the floor. I thought I was going to pass out picking it up. I can't believe that 4 days later I am still getting new blisters.

Pus is indicative of an infection, isn't it?
ben62670

The stuff that is weeping out is just the body self cleaning. I guess the clear/yellow stuff is OK. If it was green, or white I would be having issues. The doctor saw it yesterday, and she said it looked nasty, but not infected. My body temp is good. They will see it again Tuesday.

Holy crap....they want over $600 for that safety video!!
Joe

Joe
Yes, but all safety videos are expensive, even the ones with the "Gee, Bill, I'm not sure if you should stick your d**k into that electrical panel while you're standing in water !" advice.
This one is good. And on DVD, you spread the costs over 10/20/? years and it is pretty cheap.
And, Ben, be sure to listen to those who are advising you to go to PT.
It's like the commercial for Aamco Transmissions (or is it Cottman ?):
"You can pay me now, or you can pay me later".
One way or another, you will have to do PT. Do it now, do it religiously, and get 'er done !
It sounds like you have a good grip on things, try to keep your positive attitude, and it'll all be good.
Good luck !!
:)

Infection wise I think it is doing pretty good. I lost more skin when cleaning it. It was pretty bloody so I didn't take a pic, and I was in a hurry to get it wrapped again. My wrist is hurting pretty deep, my elbow, and my finger too. I am real nervous about it getting infected.

She refilled my script without signing me back in. That saved me a whole extra ER billing. I will see what she says. She knows about my other medical conditions that prevent me from working so maybe she can help me out here. I am just so fed up with America's medical/SSI system. Your guardian angel was obviously working overtime! I highly recommend getting as much care as possible for that burn. I had a similar burn about 15 years ago (Hot Bacon Grease) and I was treated with SILVADENE creme and daily bandage changes. They gave me some pills for pain management (Tylenol 3 perhaps?) and even after I thought I had healed up I found that I was very sensitive to sunlight and heat in the scarred area. I was lucky!
I hope your recovery goes well and that you find some relief from the pain.
In the future give one of these gadgets a try... http://www.flameengineering.com/Weed_Dragon.html

I have been burned in small areas pretty good. I am going to be Mr Pasty white next summer. I am glad it's not the arm that gets hit by sunlight while driving. I imagine the sensation of stuff just brushing the scar is going to feel different.
Silvadene
I have heard that many times, but it doesn't really have that much of an effect on me. A friend helped me out with all the dressings I am going to need. My X just volunteered to scrub the loose skin off. I don't know how to take that. Is she being nice, or is it for her own pleasure:confused:

Well she helped me out again tonight. I removed about 2 sq inches of skin again. The skin below the dead stuff cracked pretty deep. I flexed my wrist, and finger to loosen things up a bit. If lose any more layers I don't know if I will be able to keep doing it myself. I'm going to google the procedure to remove skin, and make saline solution. I can't think of the name of the procedure. Still a little woozy from cleaning it.

Cooked a section of my foot, while flaming off a wine sauce, and used silver sulfadiazine, aka Silvadene.
It went from a crispy black to pink in a few days. Amazing stuff. By black, I mean. . . like really black, burnt toast black.

A Polkie here in the "field" has hooked me up with all the dressings I need. I would like to give him credit, but I don't know if he would want me to do that. He is not a doctor... You know when I try to explain what the Polk family is like to "normal people" they just don't understand what we have going here. We have people that pray, truly care, and watch out for each other. I have met a lot of great people here.
There isn't one Polkie that I would not invite into my home with smiles on. Even the ones I argue with. We lost our drunk uncle, but I think that was for the best. You guys mean a lot to me. Another Polkie offered to take time off work to get me to appointments seeing I can't drive on my meds. The moral support via PM's, and phone calls... I could go on. I am still bummed I messed PF08. I really wanted to meet you all, and really wanted to thank Ken, MP, and Stu in person.

Mechanical Debridement
Methods include whirlpool baths, use of syringe and catheter, or wet to dry dressings to remove dead or infected tissue. The wet to dry procedure involves applying a wet dressing to the wound. As this dressing dries, it absorbs wound material. When the dressing is remoistened and removed, some of the tissue comes with it.
Mechanical debridement and chemical debridement often produce pain. Pain medication can be given before changing the dressing to help relieve the discomfort.
I am having a hard time finding a definitive DIY saline solution:(

Hey guys I was sent a PM about my play by play thread here. I just want to be clear of my reason for this....
Here is most of my reply
The reason for play by play is I never had a burn like this, and I have no insurance. I have gotten some good advice via PM, and phone calls. There are more than a few that have helped via phone, email, and PM. I am not looking for handouts here if that is what you are thinking. Maybe its the meds, or the pain, but I am scared about this getting infected, or permanently affected. I have had way too many injuries, and this is my master hand I am concerned about so I will continue with asking advice on this till it actually starts healing.
I hope I don't sound too pathetic here, but without insurance this does actually does scare me. The pain is nothing compared to worrying about how this is going to turn out. IDK if the doctors I have spoken to are exaggerating about taking care of this, but again at the risk of sounding pathetic I would rather take a hit to my ego than not get the help I have received so far.
If I should shut up, and sound paranoid please let me know
Thanks

Me personally, while I don't mind the thread (and no, it wasn't me that sent the PM)....I think that there is such a thing as TMI. I, personally, could do without the graphic photos, but that's just me.
As for the medical advice, man, I'd stick with the doctors and nurses.
Like I said, I hope you feel better, Ben. We are all pulling for you....but, in terms of medical advice, I think that listening to the professionals is probably the wisest course of action, you know?
As for the rest of it, perhaps the individual that sent you the PM DOES care about you. I know that in my line of work I see a lot of people that work for me, good people, who always seem to be in a world of ****. Well, generally it's because they are reaping the effects of a string of bad decisions. In which case, I sit them down and I lay out for them the cause and effect relationship of poor decision making.
It's not that the person doesn't care at all. Same with me, I care about you but I would honestly say that most of your tribulations, you had (at some point) control over. Remember when you FIRST came on the forum, the whole debacle about the TV that CC sold out from under you? The whole point was that if you didn't have the fundage to close escrow, and you were having money issues, perhaps a new plasma TV wasn't what you needed. Same thing here, I feel badly about your burn, however, if that were one of my Airmen? I would have eaten his ass out royally for doing such a stupid thing. Not only did he hurt himself, which is bad enough, but he would be screwing over the rest of the team because while he would be laid up, everyone else would be picking up the slack. In some cases, the best thing you can do for someone is boot them in the ass, which is what I think is happening here.
I really hope that you take this in a constructive manner, really, I do. If I didn't care, I wouldn't bring it up at all.

I hope your feeling better but I also hope that you have reconsidered getting professional medical attention for that burn. I really don't think that it is wise to DIY this issue.
Here is a small excerpt from www.burninstitute.org
Burns covering more body surface area than an arm of the victim, or if burns are on the face, hands, neck, perineum or feet are considered MAJOR and should be cared for in a special Burn Unit or Center.
I'm no doctor but I do think that your injuries qualify for professional medical attention. Large burn areas leave you wide open for scarring and infection. I hope you reconsider and get the medical attention you need and deserve, costs be damned. I'm sure that a payment schedule can be arranged in some way, gear can be sold, etc.....
If you don't have your health, you don't have anything. Take care and get well soon! :)

Unless anyone has suffered serious burns like Ben's and others (mine), no one has any ground to stand on to even know what he's going through.
Your body is going through so much trying to heal itself right now.. and i kid you not.. burns are a lifelong situation. Yes the pain goes away, but the scars never do.
Ben made a dumb mistake, but so have we all. It's easy to sit back and judge someone after the fact. Everyone's situation is different of course. Beating him up isn't going to accomplish anything. He needs medical care, not a lecture.
He is going to need support the whole way through this tough journey. I don't care for the pictures either.. because it reminds me of my own burns. In my case it was not because I was being a dumbass either.
Ben check out this link for a group called the Phoenix Society for burns. Please get a hold of them.

You should not have to try and take care of your own medical attention. Burns are tough to treat, infection is the biggest factor right now.. but soon other things come into play.

Thanks Al. I sent them an email. Again the pics were in poor taste, and should have had a link with a warning, but we can't edit here. Burns like this, or worse are like a back injury. Until you experience it you just don't understand. I don't feel like anyone was beating me up. It's just a lack of understanding. I don't mean that last comment in a negative way at all. My Dad had a bad back injury, and sometimes he would lay on the floor immobilized, and I did not understand why my tough guy dad was laying there like a girl scout. Not till after I broke my back, and neck did I have any sympathy, or understanding what he was going through:o I don't take this experience is such a bad thing. I am thankful that it was bad enough to wake me up, but not be a severe permanently disability. I know, and many that know me on a personal level know I have a calling, and I know it too. I have devoted way to much of my time to my selfish audio pursuits. If I devoted half the time I spend on audio to helping people that really need help I could make a difference in peoples lives. The blessings you get from putting other people first far outweigh the gratification of doing for yourself. I need to get my priorities right.
Again thanks Al
Ben

Well I did it. It came out pretty good too. I wet gauze pads with some homemade saline solution, and let them sit on the wound to soften things up a bit. After that I just scrubbed the old skin with a gauze pad. It wasn't fun, but it wasn't that bad. If I don't get infected I will be golden:)
Thanks guys
Ben

Thanks for the kind words. I am actually feeling pretty good now that I have removed the dead skin. You know it's real weird, but my hand, and arm actually feel much better now:confused:

Adrenaline from shock?
Nope. A couple times I felt a little light headed. I think maybe the tight dead skin was putting extra stress where it was creasing when ever I tried to twist, or flex. I feel like braiding again:) I'll have to do a little at a time, but at least I can get back on it:) I owe 2 Polkies some cables, and they have been very patient, and kind through this setback.

I looks alot better Ben. Prayers that infection stays away.
I had first and second degree burns on my arm when I was real young. I still remember how much it hurt when they scrubbed the dead skin off. It does feel better after all the dead is off. I think the tension from the dead skin causes extra stress on the damaged areas.
Hope it works out.

The skin is nice and flexible. I lacerated five tendons on the back of my wrist so I didn't have real good mobility before. The skin is still very thin, and a little scratch turns into bleeding. I can take a nice hot shower, and do the dishes:)

The little on as you know is autistic. I would wake up to her picking at it:D Ashley is 5 and she was very sweet. I never let her see it when it was at its worst. For real I will be near 100% in a month or two. It is amazing what the body can do. It does turn purple when it is cold out, but other than that I have no complaints. Next time I will be a little more cautious. Diesel, or kero, and I'll toss a torch instead of a trail of fuel;)

Well I just got home today. First thing I see is a note on the door "court warning". Well I guess I must pissed one of my neighbors off. The note complained about the grass being too tall, trash and litter, and a junk vehicle. A the grass isn't tall except for those few single hay style pieces that grow faster than the others. B The "litter" I guess would be the box that my radiator came in, and the piece of cardboard I used to lay on the driveway with. C the junk vehicle is my only car, and yes it is on stands. I had to tear the whole top end off the engine, and have the heads decked. I had them also do the valve seats, and cut the valves while they were at it.
It certainly didn't help with the chest pains I have been having. I wanted to bring my 68 Bronco down to restore, but after these friggen jack asses I don't know if I should.
Well my heart is decent, but I have "cancer markers" in my blood, and my platelet count is low.

WTF Ben?
Are they saying you actually have cancer and they can't find it or that you have warning signs?
What the hell were you in the hospital for anyway?
ben62670
11-13-2009, 01:49 PM
I was in the hospital for chest pain. They couldn't find much but PVC's. With the anxiety problems they tried different meds on me. I hate that. With my Hep-C, and issues they decided that a nut house was in order. With the trip to the nut house they tried some meds, and I felt better, but since I got home I have been having issues with anxiety. and chest pain. Maybe I should have stayed there.

Ben, you need to go back if things don't get better. I've been through 12 years of counseling due to PTS with childhood and Nam. I know it is hard to do, but you need to do it. If you don't want to get the best help for you, do it for the girls. Please do it, get more help!
