Has anyone here used this successfully? I want to use it to get some graphs of my subwoofers EQ, but am not sure how to proceed. I've downloaded and installed REW on my laptop. I also have ratshack analog SPL meter. REW mentioned that you shouldn't use the MIC in on your soundcard, so I can't use that. Not sure where to go from here.

Anyone willing to help give me some easy directions on how to proceed?

I am also interested. I think you need a sound card installed in your computer that has audio in/out. Not 100% sure. For more info check on WWW.AVSFORUM.com and search REW or room eq wizard. Hope this helps. Also please keep me informed on how everything works out because as soon as I get my EPIK sub ( any day now) I will be trying this. I may also look into getting Velodyne's sms-1.

Thanks

The folks at the HTS are very helpful, have you read the sticky, it is very informative. I can help but the HTS regulars are excellent, akind to the Polies here ;).

I bought the Turtle Beach SRM advantage external sound card, it works with Vista as well.

First thing is to do loop back from In and out of SC to calibrate the SC, save and load that file under settings.

Find the compensation file for your RS meter (in sticky) and load in Settings

Basically, mount SPL on tripod at LP ear height, connect SPL to line IN of SC, Connect Line OUT to AVR AUX input.

Perfrom a check levels in settings.

Start measuring.

For the money I would not buy the SMS-1. REW is free, Sound Card I used is on Newegg for $60, and if you need EQ the BFD 1124P is $100 at Guitarcenter.

Since I bought an SVS Ultra PB13 and it has the ability for 1 filter I will most sell my BFD and Midi cable since 1 filter ios all I am using on the BFD. (Need more money to buy vinatge Polks :D)

REW is an amazing tool. Hometheatershack.com folks are very helpful. I should not take you more than 2 hours from start to finish to get setup and learn how to use it.

Don't forget to include the cost of the computer. ;)

The SMS-1 is a standalone component-set it and forget it. And will control 3 subs. It also has prorgammed EQ presets, mute, night mode, and volume controls for convenience
While I'm not familiar with REW to say whether it will also handle the features I mentioned above, if you intend to use REW to EQ, won't you have to leave your PC connected to system all the time? And have REW running all the time? Or does the Berringer handle the EQ like the SMS-1?

REW is just to measure your rooms response not running full time. BFD does the EQing.

If you are looking for something to set and forget you should look at the AM-8033.

SMS-1 is pretty pricey and has its limitations.

Anyway, I am sure you will be happy with any of the above.

Since I have access to more computers than needed I did not factor in the cost of a computer.

http://www.dspeaker.com/

Over at HTS there is an article comparing it to a BFD.

If I did using something to auto EQ I would still want to be able to measure my room for best sub placement, phase and speaker distance adjustments.

Auto EQ can not resolve those issues.

FWIW, I have the am-8033. That's one of the reason I want to get REW up and running to I can visually verify what's it's doing.

Yep, that was me, I was about to pull the trigger on an AM8033 but I needed data and once learning REW adding the BFD was the easy part.

I think it is a great product but but no EQ can deal with nulls and phase adjustments and so forth.

Feel free to hollar if I can help with REW, No expert but have spent the last 2 months using it.

I have a post in the REW section over at HTS about multiple subs that has some good data, also weverb has one cal REW noob that has a lot of good stuff.

Its quite easy once you jump in and get started.

I tried a House curve but I personally think that is required when your sub is to small for your room or your sub is subpar.

In my case the room was just too big. Now that I have an SVS Ultra PB13 I run it flat for music and movies, no need to add gain for movies now.

Since getting the Monitor 12s I often times do not use the sub.

Anyway, its all fun and games until someone get hurt (money and wife)

Does anyone know of any usb soundcards for Vista that work well for REW and are available at BestBuy or Circuit City? I'd like to pick one up locally, for convenience, but it seems most the ones recommended need to be ordered online.

The Turtle Beach SRM advantage but did not find at CC or BB. Bought mine from Frys and Newegg has it.
