Sub placement ideas!

My second Velo SPL-1200R is due to arrive this Friday. I'll be doing the hook up on Sat. Presently the 1st Velo is along the left side of my entertainment center about 12" behind my AAD monitor. I'm thinking that duplicating the same set up on the right side would be optimal.

I've also read about stacking two subs or placing them side by side...what are the advantages to this type of set up, if any. Having them flanking both sides of the entertainmemt center would be the best looking scenerio, but if the other options bring more to the table, I'm game. Suggestions! :)

Well if you what to be "correct" the THX way then you put the sub up 1 in the front middle and 1 back middle. Here is a link to there page.

From what I read on that diagram if you have 2 subs you are supposed to put them in the middle of oppsing walls, so if the front and back middle won't work you can also put them on the left and right under your surround left/right (if you have them) If you click on the subwoofer tab on the left of that page it explains it in the description.

Yeah they seem to only like the set up if you do it in pairs. The way I set mine up was by putting the sub in my normal listing position and then crawled around the room. You could just walk around it as well but that seems to be a good way to do it.

One on either side of the listening field would do good let me know when you play iron man on that system. It should rock the house.

Phil, I don't know anything about subwoofers or their placement but I have the Black Sabbath "Paranoid" CD with Iron Man on it and it is one of the best sounding CDs I have. I started a thread on it a while back. I can bring it over.

If you get good bass response from a single sub through your listening area - stacking is where its at. This will give you the maximum benefit of additional slam and volume for your bass (to the tune of +6db - the equivilant of 4x the amp power). It will also give your current sub its best chance of not bottoming.

If the bass response in your room is not that great (you have lots of peaks or nulls in your bass response) or you have a sweet spot that barely covers one seating area - spreading out the subs will work best for you. By each sub interacting with your room differently (for the best benefit - put the subs opposite each other in the room) you will get a much smoother response curve and your sweet spot will increase in size. The down side of this is that you only get a 3db gain (equiviant to double the amp power) but the better interaction with your room makes it all worth while.

Long story short - it depends on your room and its interaction with bass as to what sounds better (stacking or spread out).

Did not realise that but the concepts will still be the same. As your crossover increases over 80hz though it becomes easier to localise where the bass is coming from. Based on that if crossing over at a higher crossover point, it may be worth while having the subs located near your mains (rather than spread out on opposite sides of the room).....

Michael, aren't the low frequencies mono? I don't see the point in two subs for 2channel if indeed they are mono.

Depends on how loud you listen and how much you value headroom.

Also if you have a bad room for bass - you can get much better response curves if you have multiple subs spread out throughout the room rather than a single one.
