Subwoofer to TV line output?

This is for TESTING purposes only. I received a nice new PSW505 and then promptly dropped it while taking it out of the box (put this down as things you shouldn't do after 30 hours of travel and a trans-Atlantic flight) Anyway, looks like I just smashed the corner of the MDF and *hopefully* everything else is fine. I still have a week until my new receiver shows up and I want to test out my sub to make sure I have totally F'd it up.

So, for this purpose only, can I use the L/R RCA output from my TV and run them to the line level L/R input of the PSW505 using its internal crossover? Is this safe? Again, I just want to make sure the sub is functioning properly and that I haven't damaged anything internally. I'm hoping to hear nice smooth bass with no wizzing or vibration issues caused by the drop.

Thanks in advance for any help! (BTW, I've seen people abbreviate that "Thanks in advance" as "TIA" which makes me laugh because I've just spent 35 days in Tunisia where that stands for "This is Africa") :)

I've heard of using the RCA output from a CD player to do this kind of testing. I think you start with the CD on and volume on the subwoofer at 0. Then you gradually turn the volume up to see if you are getting any output. I think it'll sound wierd, but should not sound "broken". I once read a post from c/s about this test, so maybe if they read this, they could post the exact procedure (or you could call them to ask).

Perfectly safe, but start with the sub volume at minimum and work your way up once everything is plugged in and turned on.

Yes, starting with the volume at zero and working up is a very good idea! I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, it worked! Sounds pretty good too :) Kinda weird with only the TV speakers supporting it, but I was able to test it out and it sounds as it should . . . at least I think it does with my limited experience :D

Sounds good! I would still try the DVD/CD player test, connecting the L & R channels directly from the player to the subwoofer (just because you will not have the TV speakers working at the same time, interfering with the test). Use a CD for the test if you do it (not a DVD).
