I have been doing a lot of upgrading to my system since I joined the forum. I am upgrading my receiver now. I am trying to decided btw the onkyo 806 and the marantz sr7002. They are similiar but I think the marantz have the edge. I have found great deals on both from authorized dealers. I never hear much about marantz on here but I have always heard they were some of the best. Which one would you choose. Thanks

I'd go for the Onkyo 805. It has Burr-Brown DAC's and has better amps.:)

You may want to explain what other gear you have and whether you're planning other upgrades. Your destination determines the best path. For example, I bought the On 875 because it has quite a lot of power relative to other AVRs and I did not want to buy an amp. But now upgraditis has me itching for an amp. If I had expected to buy an amp, I would not have necessarily bought the 875!!!

Well the SR7002 has 7.1 pre out. I am currently running monitor 50's for the fronts monitor 40's for surrounds and monitor 30's for rears. I think i will eventually get an amp to power the 50's. The marantz seem like more bang for the buck to me. But I dunno so thats why I need some advice lol.

DO NOT BUY any reciever without listening. What i did was take my rti4's (my rears) to Frys because i was torn between denon and onkyo. I decided on the onkyo but i recommend bring a set of your speakers (unless they have a pair) so you can listen with your band of speaker. THis seems like alot to go through but if you are like me i saved and saved for my equipement so i wanted to make sure

I would choose the Marantz (or harman/kardon, or NAD, for similar reasons). JMO.

Unless you're getting a crazy good deal on the Marantz, I believe it is hard to get more bang for your buck than the Onk. Here is how I see it.
The Onk is cheaper, more powerful, and upscales video.
The Marantz is better with music, or so I've read.
If you have an upscaling dvd player and plan on buying an amp, then I guess it comes down to whether the SQ is worth the few hundred dollars.

Forgot to mention. I don't think you really need an amp with Monitor 50's. They shouldn't be that hard to drive.

No the monitors 50 sound pretty good with the yamaha I am using now. I do think eventually I will upgrade and so me having pre out's for am amp is a must. We all know that the itch will come to buy something new. Ask my wife, I upgraded after 3 months lol:D

If you hang out here, you will continually have upgraditis. I started out with an Onk 605, R50s, and Cs2. I bought Rti 10s, which then "required" a new center. But the Rti 10s like some power and the 605 doesn't have pre-outs. So I sold the 605 and bought the 875. Now I'm looking into buying an amp! There are worse things though. The key, IMO, is to shop around and buy right. That way when you upgrade, it doesn't cost much.

Quick question off the subject a little. I am buying the new receiver because the yamaha v463 with hdmi that I have doesnt decode truehd and dtsmaster. I know the ps3 does it onboard. Will i see a difference when I let the receiver decode it or will it be about the same

I don't know. But I would not be hesitant to start a new thread. There's no doubt that someone will have some experience.
