Opera Speakers?

Manly? Since when a speaker needs to be manly? Speakers must:

1.- Sound good
2.- If 1 is met, then if they look good it's a plus.

These look good, and with Seas drivers, made in Italy, yeah, they probably sound good also.

I don'y care if they don't look manley ;)

I heard them at an audio shop in Long Beach CA. Very, very nice! I think Upscale Audio carries them, and was having some sales on them a while back. Not sure if they ship them or not. To me, they sounded like Sonus Faber wannabees, which is not a bad thing :)

Those speakers are really good looking by the way! Hopefully they sound as good if not better than they look. Any ideas on the cost?

For Italian Made Speakers, Sonus Faber is the only one I am pleased with. SF has one of the most unparalleled craftsmanship on their speakers but the price is steep. If this Opera stuff sounds good anywhere near SF at this price, bring them home. And Good Luck!

For that price, I would also be considering Focal, with some fairly impressive craftsmanship also (no plastic front), just in case you want a back-up plan (of course, you'd probably end up paying sales tax or shipping on those):

I mentioned plastic above, but on reading further, the black front on the Opera speakers appears to be leather! Never heard of leather on a speaker before, but I bet it looks better in real life than plastic would.

P.S. No editing really is a PITA.

Right; see the link in post # 9. And it is leather on the front, back and top. Sonus faber also uses leather in some of their speakers...I guess it is an Italian thing.

The sealed box concept caught my attention. It is a small floorstander claiming to hit low 30's. I think it might be a good speaker for my small room. We'll see.

I've listened to the Mezzo extensively and it's top can be a little bright even with a tubed output CD source. Careful placement and the right amplification is a MUST with the Opera design I've heard.

I really think Aliante and Sonus Fabre are a better Italian design (from what I've listened too).

Thanks for the input. I will let you know what I think. I'm surprised to hear that, since that Seas silk dome is supposed to be more on the smooth side.

Those are a sweet looking set for sure!

My old Monitor 10's were the bomb for Classical and Opera.
I was really bummed to hafta sell em but I don't have the room for them here.
The House I rented had ample room but the House I bought didn't.
They were LARGE but sounded oh so sweet.
With the new technology size isn't everything.
There are many smaller speakers now days that have a LARGE sound.

I've been playing with these for a little over a week, and wanted to share my thoughts.

The speakers are absolutely beautiful; finish, both on the veneer and leather is among the best I've seen. A real piece of fine furniture. The drivers are seas and they look like what you would expect from them.

Sound:

They sound very much like the Dynaudios; very revealing and can sound a bit on the bright side with some poor recordings. Bass is very tight, what you would expect from a sealed enclosure, and they hit low and move some air. They have that midrange magic that I think people call "liquid", that make vocals, saxophone, piano and strings sound so "in the room". Imaging is also very good, though I'm still playing with position trying to get the depth I was able to get from the Dynaudios.

All in all, a very nice sounding speaker, with a beautiful finish. I enjoy listening to them and I think that midrange is what makes them really special.
