I'm on the hunt for a thumper that won't break the bank.
Over the years I have heard that Velodyne is one of the best....is this true?
I used to have a CT-100 and I sold it like an idiot....shoulda kept it.
I have a 8in older polk PSW120 but it just don't have the "punch" I want.
I wanna sell it and get a worthy 10 or 12in replacement.
I wanna get something I'm happy with cuz I can't keep swapping out subs.
I'm looking for a versitile use Home Theater typa deal.
The Velodyne DPS-10 catches my eye.
Need your input cuz this is gonna be my last purchase for a while!

I've heard good things about HSU/Epik subs. I'm sure others will chime in with recommendations. Try doing a search also for some ideas.

I am sure there are lots to select from, but I am really happy with the SVS I purchased a few years ago. Definitely worth a look. Good luck.

Look into Martin Logan. I feel they make the best overall subs for the money. Musical and theater is excellent. The Dynamo and Grotto are not expensive and are so impressive.
Tweeter is going out of business so you could pick one up there cheap.

In my snooping around I found a "PROFICIENT S12 SUB WITH A NEW DAYTON 250W AMP & REMOTE". (It's actually 150watts @8ohm) This can be had for $203.00
Worth a ponder or no?

Both subs are under a grand. To me thats cheap for a sub. And now with Tweeter selling most stuff at 30 to 50 % off , you probably can pick one up for a couple hundred bucks. You would be getting a high class sub for half off.

try the klipsch there are two available at best buy one is higher priced, I bought the lower priced and its just fine and not to expensive..I have enough rattling of my glasses using this I dont need more to start damaging my plasma

The only way a sub from best buy would damage a plasma is if you threw it at the TV....

What is your price range, Motzart? Epik, Velodyne, SVS all make good, relatively inexpensive subs. If you are truly looking for the BEST as you stated in your first post, you'll want DIY sub about the size of a closet. JL Audio makes the GOTHAM, which is freakin' awesome, but also costs about $12k.....so......what is your price point?
MikeC78

Actually, I believe it's the other way around... Velodyne has a long way to "catch up" with the internet based companies.

The gotham is nice; however, you can grab dual f113's and they'd out do the gotham for half the price.

What are your room deminsions ? is it closed or open to other areas of your house ?
Surprised no one has asked that very important question.
If your room is 10'x10'x8' a $300 sub will be ok but if you are approaching 1500^3 or larger you are wasting your money. Save 300 more and buy a HSU 33 that is onsale right now.
If your room is approaching 4000^3 then go with the SVS PB13 but that is 5X more than you want to spend.

You can't be serious? Velodyne has been on the forefront as much as anyone else. They use Class D which some say don't perform as well as A/B amps that some higher manufacturers use, but come on. How many sub makes include a remote and microphone to easily tweak your sub from the listening position?
What has SVS done that is so exceptional in terms of technology? They just make a decent product that's affordable. IMO Hsu makes a better sub and has taken a leap forward with they new wireless subs. Epik is no different than SVS other than the fact that they use massive drivers and build a good cabinet. How have they developed the forefront?
Emotiva is making several new subs that will have a proprietary amp designed by the company themselves as well as tweaking with a remote and computer based GUI. These are the subs I'm waiting for. Emotiva may be a small company that's pushing the forefront, but companies like Velodyne were the first to implement the ideas.

I have a odd sized small living room.
It's 10ft wide.....15ft long and 8ft ceiling.
Partly open on one side and open on the long end.
It's a goofy setup! :o
So I really need a high dispersing sub to get the most out of it.
Another I have been researching that's reasonable price is a Yamaha SW315 with the QD Bass system.

Sorry...but I've already traveled down that ID road. Now for my hard earned money, I need not look any further than the Velo SPL-R series. The other subs I've tried (both ID & loaners from dealers) were terrific for HT but laid a huge goosegg for 2 channel listening. The Velo is truly awesome at both, that's enough to keep me happy & smiling.
Velo has always set the pace for technology advances, offers a tremendous lineup to fit a multitude of budgets. There R&D is second to none & it shows.

It may hit 20hz but I wonder at what decibel level.
The A2-300 I provided the link for above has a response of 18-100hz.
Another you may want to look at is this. $239 and it has received may good reviews from people who have used it.

Your thoughts? If it's 10dbs down at 20hz, it's unlikely it's usable on an entry level sub. If you're really looking for a bargain try this...

This is the Hsu design based on the venerable STF 3. You'll get very real 20hz performance and great output. Sure it's fugly, but it will perform.

I bought a CSX 15 for my son for Xmas and a buddy bought his dad a CSX 12. We both did little mini reviews on AVS and AH (his is better), but Cadence linked them on their site...look on the CSX 15 page. Anyway the CSX 12 is a very solid performer down to ~ 25hz, quite a lot of output and midbass punch. The CSX 15 is more articulate and powerful, but not by much. I owned the previous XSub12 which was an excellent budget performer...did a comparison with the Bic H100, which was slightly better, but the CSX 12 owns them both. They are not quite in the ED class, but the CSX12 can be had for ~ $250 shipped or less with ebay discounts or Cadence's online coupons.

I am with you on the budget. While overhauling my gear I wanted to find a good subwoofer at a good price til I was able to afford what I really wanted. I bought a Boston Acoustics Horizon Series HPS12HO Subwoofer and received it friday. It was purchased from one call on amazon shipped for 216. I absolutely love it. I think this is a good sub. I bought it on the name of boston acoustics having never heard it. Some might not agree but I think for the price that I got it for it cant be beat and its well within your budget.

Well I DID get a Velo DSP-10 but not from there.
$225 shipped NIB.
Was up on the bay on a $250 BIN and I had a PP coupon for 10% off.
Now that's not a bad deal!!!
I greatly appreciate everyones input on this!
The Cadence was VERY tempting but just a lil too big for the place I had to put it.
18in wide was just a bit much vs the DSP-10 @ 14.5in.
I had a Velodyne CT-100 and loved it.
If it's anywhere near as nice as the CT-100 I had I'll be plenty happy!
It does have lil more RMS @ 185 watts (CT-100 150watts)
Not to mention Velodyne has one of the best warranty's I've seen! Three years (electronics) Five years (drivers)
All these crazy brands out there.....I just decided to go with a brand that I knew was good.
Too bad Polk didn't make a better sub!
I have never found any of em very impressive. :(

I am looking at the Cadence CSX-12 and Bic H100. What do you guys think is the better sub on a budget? Thanks, CK

The only way a sub from best buy would damage a plasma is if you threw it at the TV....
Yeah... if you're talking about the KSW-series that they still insist on trying to get people to buy...
But a lot of the Best Buys are carrying the RW-series, and they're quite another animal. I have the RW-10D, and it's a VERY competent sub in every aspect. Fast, deep, strong as hell.

My gut says the Cadence, it's been 3 years since I heard the Bic and about a year for the Cadence. The Bic and the previous rev of the Cadence were here at the same time and very close. The new Cadence is much better.

The best I previewed was a KEF.....it was round kinda looked like a tire in a stand.
Don't recall the model....it was at a local high end store.
Guy told me it was $500 bux + our 8.3% sales tax here.
It really thumped.....10in driver on one side and 10in passive on the other.
Was a odd looking thing to say the least.
BTW: This was the same guy that said Polk was cheap junk!
*** UPDATE ***
Ahhhh I found it on their site.....
