For all HK 3490 owners please...

Say gang, any of you have issues with hooking your turntables up to your HK 3490's? I've got a Stanton STR8-100. Seems to be a digital out. Can't hook it up to my phono analog in, it makes a horrid cracking sound that can't be adjusted by volume. Sounds like a great way to blow your speakers and kill your receiver in one fell swoop. But when I hook it up to my tape/vid/etc Input it sounds like dog balls. Extremely low volume and horrible quality of sound. Any suggestions? Should I just bite the bullet and get a new turntable? And if so, are Technic 1200's still the bomb? I'm not into all that high fidelity thousand dollar turntable's and such. I love my vinyl, but what I love is the analog warmth and that snap crackle and pop. I use AIFF for my sonic purity. Blasphemous, I know. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

From the RCA stereo pair output, that TT has a selector that can choose either phono level, which is designed for Phono inputs, or line level, which is for Aux/Tape/CD type inputs.

If your HK has a phono input, I'd suggest you use it and set the TT to output phono level. If this combo doesn't work, there is probably something wrong with the HK's phono section. If that is the case, switch to line level output on the TT and hook to Tape/Aux/CD input and see what the sound is like.

The digital out is from the SPDIF output (single coax or mini jack). If you were hooked to the digital out, you would only hear static.

Thanks Billbillw,

Hooked up my turntable's 'Digital out' to my HK's 'Coaxial' and boy does it sound sweet!!! I actually called HK for assistance and they told me since my turntable was indeed a "Digital Turntable" It would sound even better than my analog connection. Absolutely cranking Billy Cobham's Spectrum right now. Freakin' Fanflippin'Tastic!!!!

P.S. Can't wait to hear it on SDA's!!!!!!!!!
