DUDE don't put to much stock in SACD. It's not exaclty a format thats mainstream or easy to find. Many guys in here still buy them and know some cool websites, I'm sure they will chime in. I kinda left it on the waste side. I care about it but I don't k=have time to put energy into it.

Good luck and I hope SACD comes back from the grave, or the waste side.

Sounds like I'm better off getting the remastered copy eh?

I'd get the Gold MFSL edition but it's BIG BUX!!
From what I understand the MFSL stuff is more collectable than anything.
Sound quality doesn't warrant the big dinero....least that's what I hear.

Don't get me wrong, if you have SACD and can find a copy in by all means man, SACD is superior to cd in my opinion any day of the week. I was a early adapter to SACD and DVD AUDIO and wanted nothing more then there survival .

With more and more SACD releases coming out every month, it seems unlikely that it will fade. Not to mention, some of the high end manufactures are coming out with SACD models when they have not in the past.

Sonically, SACD kicks some serious ass.

Ask yourself this. Is the sound quality worth the extra dough to you?

I know it is for me, but only you can answer that for yourself.

Hell effin yeah. lets say you don't get many sacd's and spin cd's, guess what?? Most sacd players play cd's better then same level cd players.

Go for it man, there are many titles out there and you will find something you like or a lot. I hold on to my 2 Sacd player and always look and see if there is one for me. I got on early and very fustrated when they would not release everything new in Sacd, I love so many different kinds of music and sacd doesn't offer everything. It sucks for me actually but don't cut yourself short man, go for it.

Only the Hybrid SACD discs will work in a regular (Redbook) CD player. Some will only work in an SACD player.
Some are stereo and some are surround and some are both.
But all SACD playesr will also play regular (Redbook) CD's

The original question is... "Is SACD here to stay?"

A: Mine are. And as long as titles that interest me are being released. I will continue to buy them. Few and far between as they may be.

For that price you could afford to get your feet wet and snag it in time for the Holidays. Couple other Polkies grabbed this and claim it's a solid player. IMO, that's an unbeatable price for everything that player does. Hybrid SACD's require a player capable of playing the Super Audio layer. A standard CD player will only playback the redbook layer of the hybrid.

Motzart--

If audio quality matters, go for it. Just be sure buy Hybrid SACD's: that way you can always play the disc on any player, copy music to your computer, etc. - MOST SACD's now are. The nice surprise is that the quality of Redbook layer (the standard stereo CD part of a Hybrid disk) often tends to be of pretty darn good quality.

I have had several copies of DSOTM. The original vinyl, regular CD, 20th anniversary digital remix and recently a SACD copy. The digital remix does sound better than the original CD but the SACD (stereo) is superior. The first thing you notice is that you hear all those background voices that you normally strain to hear.

I got this copy to try out my new universal disc player (Denon DVD 2910) that I picked up off ebay. I am only using it for 2 channel audio and am very pleased with the sound quality, especially for $160.

I don't know if it is worth replacing my CD collection with SACD or DVD-A but as I add to my music collection I'll strongly consider the higher definition format.

I don't have a SACD player yet but have been picking up some SACDs at BMG for cheap. My oppo does play DVD audio and the Rough Mix dvd audio sounds wonderful through my HT rig. I just got the Tommy SACD remixed and remastered by PT on ebay for $12. at that price why not? The new oppo blu ray will play SACD and I hope they keep the DVD audio format as well.

Motzart,

I think you should definitely get into SACD. The Pioneer Elite player seems like a great buy (I am very tempted myself but awaiting gov't bailout), along with the Oppo 980. Have to tell you that many SACD titles, like those from the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, have already gone out of print, but you can still pick them up on ebay. However, one listen to a well-produced SACD, like Steely Dan's "Gaucho", you will be hooked.

Btw, don't look to replace your entire CD collection with SACD. When you buy a CD, just check whether a SACD version is available. SACD is, and will remain, an audiophile-oriented format....that just happens to play on almost all regular CD player.

The SCD-CE595, which I also have, is nowhere near being the first SACD player marketed. In fact, the SCD-CE595 is still in production and is listed on Sony's current lineup in the US.

My current primary SACD player, the $180.00 Sony DVP-NS500V SACD/DVD/CD player, actually predates the SCD-CE595.

But the Sony DVP-NS500V is a fine sounding machine. The Absolute Sound called its CD performance on par with the original Rega Planet, and the NS500's SACD performance rank above the Planet. Not bad for an inexpensive DVD/SACD/CD player.

Sony knows how to do SACD on most of their players. I have a Sony DVP-NS775V that I bought for $50 (refurb through SonyStyle) with the intent on sending it to Matt Anker at SACDMods to upgrade. I am still amazed how well SACD sounds through this inexpensive DVD machine (redbook not so good). I will still send it on for the mods...but it sounds very good for $50.

The first Sony SACD player was the SCD-1 which retailed for $5,000. It was stereo only and working machines in good condition are still in demand. The SCD-CE595 and the SCD-C2000ES were the last SACD-CD only players made by Sony. They came out in 2004 IIRC.

These are the last audio-only SACD capable player Sony introduced; they were other SACD-capable players that included DVD playback....like the 3100ES/9100ES single-disc players.

The SCD-CE595 and the C2000ES are basically the same machine, except for the C2000ES' headphone jack with volume control, dedicated L/R analog outputs, better parts inside, better remote, and 5 year warranty.

Sony recently released a new SACD player, the SCD-XA5400ES ES , for $1500..
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665537319

It has balanced stereo only XLR outputs, and I recently bought a new pre-amp with 2 sets of XLR inputs specifically to handle both this player, and the Dac1. Once I can find it online for $1000 with no tax, and free shipping I will be buying it for the living room stereo.

That is one of the very few SACDs that should be listened to in multi-channel SACD.

"Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield is another SACD that SHOULD be listened to in MC.

For everything else...2 channel rules!

I think the Dark Side of the Moon is the most popular SACD to date. Its cool but for a rock mix I think Toys in the Attic was a better multi-channel mix.
I've done a bunch of SACD surround experimenting lately and my findings are that if I know Krall is singing at the piano she is playing, I want to hear her voice and the piano coming from speakers on the same side of the room. LOL.

Let's see, some of the albums I've heard are good in SACD MC are DSOTM, Tommy (The Who) and Beck - Sea Change. I'm sure there's more that would sound good , I just haven't had much chance to do any serious listening yet. EVERY SACD has a 2 Channel mix...and that is all I really care about. My HT rig has a SACD player but almost all of my SACD listening is on my 2 Channel rig. So I guess I will continue to add to my SACD collection.

Most of the original SACD releases had ONLY a 2 Channel SACD mix (no redbook or MC). They advanced the format to MC hoping to get a broader spectrum of listeners and take the format more mainstream. I would venture to say that the majority of SACD purchasers are audiophile types that are more interested in the SQ of the recording vs the "surround sound" and the format has no real demand from the typical HT fan.

A well put together Redbook only system is enough for me. (2 channel) I had a SACD/CDP player that I traded in on a straight Redbook player and the RB only is light years ahead of the SACD/CDP.

My MC SACD player is in the HT but it does not get much use. Seems kinds gimmicky to me.

If you're into classical music, you owe yourself to check out the Sony/BMG/RCA "Living Stereo" SACD series. Some of these titles were originally recorded back in the 50s in multi-channel (left/center/right) and SACD gives these recordings an opportunity to be played back as they were recorded. On top of that, these titles are relatively inexpensive titles at about $12.00 a pop. Highly recommended!!

I've had a SACD player since 2001. I've had the same 3 SACDs for that long. When I rebuilt my system a couple months ago I bought about 20 new titles. I've barely had a chance to check them out but I do like the Globe Sessions/Crow and a James Taylor title.
Still, I'm thinking that I'll get more enjoyment if I put all my speaker budget in just a stereo pair.

I only have one SACD, the Dark Side of the Moon hybrid. Currently I don't have an SACD player, but it is on the list for one of my next purchases. There are a ton of titles that you can get for it. I don't think SACD is ever going to push CD's out of the market, but it'll be here to stay for me. I've got my eye on the Bob Dylan 16 disc hybrid SACD box set...I'll probably end up getting it before I even get a player though.

What's a good player in the 250-400 dollar range? I've been looking at the Onkyo DV-SP506 (http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=DV-SP506&class=DVD&p=i)...Seems like a nice one to me. It's also a 1080p upscaling DVD player as well. Is this a good one? Is there something in the same price category that's highly recommended?

Just crunched some numbers at sa-cd.net....

Despite the current worldwide economic situation, it's entirely possible to have over 600 new SACD released in 2008. As of this post, there were 595 new SACD releases added to sa-cd.net for 2008. With 2 weeks left in the year, it is entirely possible to achieve the "600" number.

For the record, the following was the total for each of the years....

2004 - 891 (excluding January 2004)
2005 - 806
2006 - 757
2007 - 517 (as of 9/20/07)

The total for 2007 was approximately 744.

Well hopefully they'll get to crankin some more out then and they can make 600 this year. I love the SACD format...even though I don't have a player yet, though I will soon. I don't wanna see them go anywhere.

The total at sa-cd.net, as of this post, stands at 5,599 titles. 600 new titles for 2008 is basically achieved. Don't forget that sa-cd.net doesn't list every SACD released, therefore the total number of SACD titles released are more than what's indicated at the site.

Let's see, some of the albums I've heard are good in SACD MC are DSOTM, Tommy (The Who) and Beck - Sea Change. I'm sure there's more that would sound good , I just haven't had much chance to do any serious listening yet. Oh and I havn't found 'Sea Change' at a reasonable price yet, but after hearing the reg CD version, I can only imagine.

In DVD-A I've read that the Beatles 'Love' album is pretty good as well.

Oh yeah- I forgot to add another awesome must-have Multi Channel disc:
Dire Straits -- Brothers In Arms - 20th Anniversary Edition (http://www.amazon.com/Brothers-Arms-Dire-Straits/dp/B0009A21R6) in SACD Also avail in DVD-A.

There's lots of talk about the upcoming Oppo Blu-Ray player, which will also have SACD support.

... for me. I've got my eye on the Bob Dylan 16 disc hybrid SACD box set...I'll probably end up getting it before I even get a player though.

FYI, I know its not a set and is likley included but...

The SACDs of Bob Dylan, like all other SACDs from US Sony, should be considered out-of-print. If you're interested in a US Sony title, get it before it's gone or go up in price.

I am not sure if this is a good sign for the future of SACD but I just picked up a new (cut-out) copy of Nora Jones "Come Away With Me" for only $9 in a new/used CD shop. The redbook CD version was $8 used.

I haven't had a chance to listen on my SACD player but I notice a big difference in SQ in my car CD player.
