Sony 40" 1080p LCD for $899

Any input on what looks to be a pretty good deal at both BB and Crutchfield?:

Wasn't sure if someone here had this model, or any good/bad input. Obviously this is their entry line, but I've heard of "sparklies" issues with some of the V and W series, and just don't want to put the $$ into an xbr set.

For $900, if I don't hear anything horribly negative, this may be added to the living room today as a gift to "both of us" since we are not exchanging gifts this year...

And I'm also considering the Samsung A530 40" model (which is $100 more at both places.)

So any input would be appreciated, as I'd like to pick this up today after work.

Sony 40in 1080p for $899 is a great deal IMO. Not their top of the line series but it's a good TV for the price.

You can get a 13" color TV off craigslist for about $10

Do the math. The 13" TV has 480 lines of resolution. The 40" TV has 1080.

A 40" diagonal widescreen has a screen which is 19.6" tall.

A 4:3 13" TV is about 7.8" tall.

Thus, the 13" TV gives you about 61.5 lines of resolution per inch.

The 40" Sony only gives you about 55 lines of resolution per inch.

Therefor, friendly math shows us that you can get a much higher resolution picture and save yourself $889 !!

See how we can use statistics and numbers to save money when we conveniently ignore most other variables and considerations? Awesome!

But keep in mind the price - if it's a good deal, don't shoot yourself in the foot over analyzing it. Would suck to spend two hours deciding, and then bham it is out of stock.

Hahah, nice one Wizzy. If that's the case, I should have just kept my 1st 9 inch B&W tv from 1980. Then again I wouldn't have a remote, but I'd have saved literally thousands on tv's by now ;)

Yea, I've also done a TON of digging around on the AVS forum, and that's what helped me drill down to those 2 models.

Hoping someone here has either so I can get a better idea of pluses and minuses from someone's personal standpoint.

The Sony is driven by the bravia 1 engine, while the W and V series are driven by the Bravia 2. Not sure if that makes a huge difference, and I'm sure in the end I'd be pleased with either set, just want to make sure I get the absolute best bang for my buck.

40 minutes till I sneak out of this taco stand. Any last minute input? Would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling I'll be pleased with either one (like I said earlier) but don't want to miss out on some small detail that was a decision maker/breaker for someone else...

I would get the Samsung; I have one (37") and it's a great TV. It also looks nicer IMO.

I just bought 32" and 40" LCD today for my wife's parents.
They looks great but it comes with only 2 HDMI and 2 components connections.

not to derail,, but whats up with Plasma prices,,, went to Brandsmart today and they had 50 inchers,,, sony,,sammies,,,etc.,,, 798.00,, why so low???

37" for $799


what gives ?

As usual, I went a bit over the top. Ended up with a 46" Sony Z series. My GOD what a picture. Still piddling with the settings (I get the feeling I will be for a while...) but this is incredible. Spent nearly double what I intended on spending, but I think I'm a bit more "future proof" with the 10bit panel and 120hz.

Madden looks ludicrous, and it's almost taken some getting used to in COD.

I think Plasma's and DLP tv's are slowly fading out of the market. I think within the next year or two they'll be like the tube tv's and rear projection
