right now i have lsi25's for front, lsic for center and lsifx...so should i bother trying a 7.1 setup or is it not necessary?

Also take in consideration there's not many 7.1 movies out there. Do you have any HD decoding going on?

My vote is stay with 5.1.

go for 7.1 if room size allows, not many movies out there in 7.1 yet however you can still take advantage of it . I say go for it .

I'm a fan of 7.1 myself, but as people have already said, there aren't to many movies actually in 7.1 right now. If your room size permits it though, I say go for it. In the future there will be more releases that are dubbed in 7.1...so it's always nice to think to the future.

I feel that it adds a lot to movies though...when someone is walking up from behind you...it comes through the speakers that are actually behind you, rather than being next to you along the back wall.

7.1 without a doubt, unless your in a very small room. gives a great transition from front to rear and soundstage even if it is a 5.1 soundtrack, if 7.1 then even better but well worth it IMO.

It's not necessary as most of what's out there is 5.1.
I've been waiting for 7.1 to catch on since 2002 so I wouldn't hold your breath on it taking off anytime soon.
7.1 just to splurge and be excessive ! ;)

I disagree with that, its like saying theres no point in having more than 1 sub as it is 5.1 channels not 5.2.

Having the side channels fills the gap between front and rear regardless of 5.1 or 7.1 soundtracks. If your amp is 7.1 it will matrix the signal for the side channels so its not as though they are sitting there doing nothing, they are not a dominant channel in the system and for me in a 6 meter by 6 meter room well needed with great improvements allround in soundstage really enveloping the whole room.

Try it and see if you like it, this is the best way to find your answer.
