View Full Version : 60 Hz hum from cable TV

Anyone seen this before and maybe have an easy fix.

After about 2 hours of messing around with my system, I finally found the source of a 60 hz hum in my system. It is from the cable TV connection. If I disconnect it from the street, the hum goes away. This is on my AV system, so disconnecting it isn't really a good option. It feeds back through my video connections on my equipment, so I haven't been able to find a way to isolate it without just unhooking.

I could call Mediacom, but this isn't a stupid coupler issue. Probably a repeater or something on thier line.

Is there a simple high pass filter or something that is easy to throw on the cable coax line to get rid of this?

I think I would call the cable company. They should repair, replace, etc. with no arguments. I've experienced a similar problem with Time Warner that they resolved after 2 trips.

Clean the cable to ground connection outside your house and/or order one of these: http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=180-075

Doing both resolved the noise on my TV(scrolling lines) and reduced floor noise.

If possible, use the optical (TOSLINK) output from your cable box to the preamp/receiver. That will solve any hum issues from cable. That's the simplest solution if you have the ability.

I battled the same problem when I first went with separates (amp). Tried many things but my ultimate solution was to get the Jensen VRD-1FF ground loop isolator.

Fixed the hum noise immediately.

Possible, but not necessarily- there will still be the video connection's ground from the HDMI, component, S or even composite video hookup.

The other advice in the thread is correct-
A) Call the cable company and complain.
B) Get an isolation transformer such as the Jensen.

This isolator worked for me.
