I just picked up a pair of ESS AMT-1 towers with Heil tweeters ($50).Woofers were shot so figured I could try the tweeters on the SDA's.Apparently they're 4ohms.I'm not a tech so need to ask if I need to change the crossovers and how,or can I hook them right up?How would I wire the two onboard tweeters to the single Heil?

Trust me the answer is no. Even with good XO modeling software, an SPL meter in a good environment, lots of experimenting, and luck you would have so much time/frustration into it. Just get the RDO's, new caps and resistors, and be done with it.

Can you tell me what RDO means?

I bet you could get a good buck for those Heils if their still functional.
As mentioned you would need to completely re-engineering the crossover to use them in your SDA's.

It might be do-able, but some things are just sick and wrong :(
Sell the AMT's on eBay and be done with it.

Not sure what it stands for, but those are the tweeters that you can get from Polk to upgrade your SDA's.

Those AMT heil tweeters are gold, They sell regular on Ebay for over 200/ pair. And the AMT 's had room shaking bass and are desirable but very power hungry, refoam them , sell them ! And put the money into your Polk system with updated tweeters and caps and coils if you can.

From what I understand, the SLxxxx series of tweeters was named after the Polk Audio engineer who developed them (Stu Lumsden ?). I am nor sure where RDO came from.

About $300+/pair actually...I generally don't like to let go of gold when I find it so may put these on display till I can figure out a way to use them...perhaps bi-amped,after i've learned more.Still in the process of recapping, etc. my amp....Will have to practice PATIENCE!!! and remember to practice PATIENCE!!!

So what are the best RDO's for the SDA -1B's?Anybody got a part number??

Having patience is one of the hardest things to deal with in this hobby...it's worth it in the long run though.

Is it possible to get a capacitor/resistor upgrade "kit" so that I can skip all the searching/choosing/head scratching advice etc..and just get the job done?

nope. but there are tons of threads in here about updating the crossovers for nearly every model of SDA ever made.

The search function on here is pretty bad IMO. It has a bit of a learning curve to say the least.

Doesn't it? I haven't mastered the search function on here yet myself really. You've just gotta try different ways of saying the same thing...and search through a million posts.

You don't have to type anything in the search box;)

You can pick up any small amp feed it with a small capacitor in the input, ( very small cap. google for high impedance crossover points) and just set the whole tweeter on top and see if it helps !

Sorry you don't like my answer, but there is a lot more to speakers than guessing. Go ahead and try, but just doing it right and having it right is the way to go. There is way more to speaker design than just playing with XO points. I have done many different speaker designs, and tweaks. Lobing, phasing, axis, and baffles also have a lot to do with it. Get a speaker design book and get your read on.

No,nothing to be sorry about! I just didn't have a snappy comeback and thought the angry face best reflected my consternation on the whole subject: Having a great piece and lacking the money, knowledge and experience to do anything with it before ultimately they would probably have to go to pay for other pressing things..but it would have been nice to at least hear them and appreciate what they could do if I could have accomplished it relatively easily. But hey,I did find them and I can sell them, and that ain't too bad!

Simply put, the forum's search engine won't work with 3 characters or less. And it won't work with hyphens or periods (and probably some other punctuation). You can however use the * wildcard such as SDA*
Or you can use Google and limit your search to the polk site. IMO you'll get better results.
An example to type in to Google: sda crossover site:polkaudio.com
You can get more crafty with the search terms on google to further narrow the search down.
