Blown tweeters

Hello to all,
This is my first time in here but I could use some advice here. While setting up my new television to my existing home audio system I just happened to take the front screens off of my front RM-800 tower speakers and got a surprise. The tweeters are not working and after looking a little closer it looks as though they have gotten really hot around the perimiter of the cone and were literally burned. The two 5 inch on each speaker work fine. Now I know nothing about speaker inner workings but it seems to me like this is an electrical surge problem. I have the whole system set up through an APC surge protector. My question is , should I bother trying to replace the blown tweeters or do you guys think that it is something within the speaker that is just going to do the same thing to the new ones. These towers are paired with a very nice Polk powered sub, (can't remember the model and it is not very easy to get to the back), a CS-1 center, and R-15 bookshelves at the rear. Mid to high range Onkyo tuner (SR-703).The towers are by far the oldest part of the setup. Any thoughts on new towers or fronts?

let's step back,, have/had you been really pushing them hard in the recent past? If so,, you might have clipped your amp/receiver and smoked the tweets. I guess that an electrical "surge" could have gotten to them,, but I would guess that it would affect some of the other components as well. Good luck and let us know what you find.

No, I don't think I have ever really pushed any of these speakers. Mostly movie watching at mid volume. No other speakers or components are damaged. I am amazed that I did not hear a difference but now that I know its there it is driving me nuts. Then again I guess it could have happened when I was setting everything up. These are fairly old speakers and I really don't want to dump a bunch of money into them.

Oh and the sub is a PSW 505.

i got my rti70's from a friend with blown tweeters because he was pushing it pretty hard but nothing i would consider extreme. I called polk and bought new tweeters for like $140 and now it's like a new speaker. I would just call polk, way cheaper than buying new towers. IDK if polk still does this but when i called and mentioned i was on this site it got me 10% off
