View Full Version : Paint Job for Club Polk Members

First off I am not trying to start a business here or anything.

But if there are some members here that might be interested in having something painted. Let me know and I'll see what I can do for you..

My dad has owned and operated a Body shop for the last 9 years and this is were I have worked for the last three. The facility is right next door to my house, so I have easy access to the Body Shop.

I can not not do custom graphics. I am not much of an artist. But I can do solid colors in just about any color that you can think of. If You have an old amp or like that you want to bring back to original status. I can have the paint scanned and mix a matching color for it. Or if you want a totally new color for it. I can do that also.

Ideally I would like for it to be stripped of its electronics if possible. And just send a case, cage, faceplate or what ever it may be. I don't want to be liable for anything happening to somebody's electronics...

I have no idea on pricing yet. It would be subjective to how big the peice is and how difficult it would be to paint.. But I would do it as cheap as possible.. Like I said. I am not here to start a business. But rather try and help out a fellow polk member..

I think this is enough information for now..

Please if there are any questions fire away.

I don't know how this will go. Shoot. Maybe nobody will be interested. Thats OK too. I'm just throwing it out there. If think you might want something painted. just let me know..

I don't know if this will work or not. But I'll try and post a slide show of the last amp I did...

Just click on the pic.

Cheers

Nick

Thanks Ben.

An empty amp case or such probably wouldn't cost more than $20.00 both ways for most people..... Wouldn't be very heavy in most cases..

I have been avoiding using metal and plastic cases because of the finishing factor and that wood is much easier to finish well. However, it looks like I have a new option. I'll keep you in mind with my upcoming projects Nick and that's a great offer for people.

Hey, if you ever need a chemical that will remove paint easily, LMK. I have experience with quite a few number of products for different substrates. This might come in handy if you ever have a customer that has small parts to where the paint has flaked off but you don't want to sandblast, sand or work it to the point of being smooth again. I hate doing that kind of crap. I'd rather start from bare metal.

I even have a product I use that will remove all traces of oil based paint off brick and concrete. That's the truth and no lie.

Would you paint the upper bumper of a ford f150? :)

I could. But you might be better off getting it done locally. Anything automotive I won't be able to do on my own time. And will have to be done on shop time. Which is $49 an hour plus materials...

I sent you a PM....

This goes for bikes or anything automotive... Audio pieces I can slip into the paint booth while were painting something else. That way I don't have to pay for shop time. Its cold here right now and it cost $25.00 just to turn the booth on. And then it continues to burn a massive amount of gas and electric after that. It has a 1.2 million BTU furnace in it. And its not cheap to run. My dad would be super pissed if I ran it for every little peice I had to paint and didn't pay him for it...

So please. IF possible. Try to stick to audio related parts...

Thanks.

It works incredibly well. It ain't cheap but I'm in good with the supplier so I'm able to get it for a decent price. All you need is an HVLP sprayer, a scrubber, a 4000 psi pressure washer and this stuff. I remove graffiti quite often off of brick and masonry. It doesn't even leave so much as a "ghost image" of where the paint used to be. Doesn't even take that long either. I removed 6 or 7 layers of graffiti off the side of a Battery Plus store that was 45' long and the paintings were upwards of 10' tall. I was leaving the job within 4 hours and it looked like they just built a brand new brick wall. It had about every type of paint out there on it, including Kilz. Took it all right off.

How do you handle the lettering on the case? Just paint over it? Reapply it after painting? Thanks.

You could get a silkscreen company to reapply the lettering. Either that or contact a graphics company to make a template [sticky letters only] for the lettering for you. Both are not cheap options.

This is a really great idea IMO! I wish I were closer to Indiana, but I will certainly consider it for anything that can easily be "stripped and shipped"! So much stuff starts to look shabby because of some minor cosmetic issue, and so many of us are anal about our gear, but it would not usually be feasable to consider a new paint job ... until now!

Thanks Nick!

Bingo!

I can not do the lettering.

What I did with the Jolida is find stickers that I thought would look good. And then applied them after the paint job.

If you wanted to find the lettering before hand. What I could do is apply the base coat. Then apply the lettering and clear over top of it. Then it would look like the lettering was painted on..

But this takes some time and is tedious work. To cut down on costs and my time I would suggest you do the lettering after wards. Or just leave it off. Either way. I can do it. Or I could do it afterwards...

But it would cost more....

Nick, I got a job for you if you can do it. First of all I have no clue if this would work but...

Just got some SDA-1C's and was wondering if you could paint the wooden end caps to kind of look the same as the LSi/TSi glossy shiny beautiful black.

Would it work?

Thanks bro,
Eric.

That would be pearlescent.

It's also commonly referred to as "flip-flop" paint.

I'm a big fan of House of Kolor paints. Some very nice trick stuff in their product catalog to include glow powders. I've used their product on one of old motorcycles and the results were bad a$$. I know this is audio product you're shooting, just posting a thought.

nikolas812
06-22-2009, 11:55 AM
Yeah. They've got some cool stuff. But almost all of it is pricey.

Its mainly for custom work. Which we don't do. So I've never used it. It would be fun to get a chance to mess with some of the stuff they offer...

Maybe a Polkie will want a Glow in the Dark amp or something.:D

Hey Nick,

I like that system sig. It kinda makes me tear up. Can we expect some paint mods on your own gear?

The only thing that would be a candidate.

Would be the SDA's.

All my other gear will probably be to my liking. Although I haven't seen the Rogue in person. So the jury is still out on it. But I have already bought some black trim pieces for my XPA two. And that will make me happy with the amp.

I plan to buy a black Jolida. I'll be happy with that

That leaves the Rogue and SDA's. If I don't like the Rogue finish. I'll probably paint it black to match the rest of the gear.

And I have been throwing around the idea of painting my top and bottom caps on the SDA's piano black. And leaving the one strip of oak down the sides. Or better yet. Taking them to my cabinet guy and have him put a nice glossy maple finish on them. I think that would be sick.

So yes. I have ideas.;)
