View Full Version : [Help Needed] Velodyne mini VS. Polk psw111

I was about to order psw111 for the small footprint I need and because I think it would be appropriate for what I have.......R30 front, CS2, M30 rear. However, I always hear about Velodyne subs and I see that the Velodyne Impact Mini is very similar in size to PSW111 for about 100 bucks more. What do you guys think about that particular Velodyne? It seems alot more sophisticated I guess is the word I would use?

I don't know a whole lot about different subs, but it seems like if you're gonna move up to that price range, you might as well look at some of the entry level hsu or svs subs.
I didn't have that much to spend on a sub when I got mine, but I didn't read great things about polk subs. I ended up going with a Velodyne VX10, which was priced similarly to the psw111. If I was going to spend more though, I would have definitely looked into something from svs (or maybe epik, but those are a little more expensive...)

Thanks manman, I can get the velo for 250 and that's about pushing the limit for me!! Reason I like those 2 subs is for the small size. I looked at svs and everything seems to be out of my price range anyway......although what I hear about svs is great also.

oh yeah- when I looked it up the price was more in the mid 300's. At 250 it doesn't seem like a bad deal. I've never heard it in person though, so I don't know how well it performs for that price point.

I can't find a review on it anywhere!! From what I know about Velodyne compared to Polk I suppose I should know the answer, I was sure hoping someone would have a little info though.....I'll wait and see. Thanks again manman

I actually sell home audio equipment and we carry both the velodyne impact mini (i'm assuming you're talking about the impact series) and the polk psw111 where I work. Honestly as much as I am a huge fan of Polk and am about to get a $3,200 Polk surround sound system I would recommend the Velodyne when it comes down to one of those two.
ps. I am buying Polk subs for my system :)

Thanks cc, you recommend the velo for me but you're getting polk subs for your system? hmmmm.....sounds fishy to me...lol

There's a sales contest at my work and depending on how much polk you sell you earn points for a discount... the $3,200 system is actually only going to cost me about $700ish out of pocket minus the time i spent selling the speakers over other speakers with potentially more profit in them... so the subs i'm getting are in a different price range than what you are looking at.
If I was going to buy a sub and my choices were the PSW111 or the Velodyne impact mini I would go with the Velodyone 10/10 times.
I just wanted everyone to know i'm still a Polk fan at heart regardless of the fact that i'm recommending this particular Velodyne ;)

Must be nice.....thanks for the input cc....I appreciate it. I'm very close to pushing the BUY button on the Impact mini.....so hard of a decision but only because of the extra 130 bucks I'll spend!!!

how much is it?

250 for impact, 120 for psw111, not new of course.

i would almost say get two psw111 but if placement/size is an issue get the velodyne
The Polk PSW 111 is a pretty good sub for its size 150 watts and its 8" woofer. For music it is probably superior to its bigger brothers the 10" PSW 110 and 12" PSW 125s (current).
As you know from looking at the specs the Velodyne is a new sub, a mini with 180 watts and a 38hz low. It uses an 8" passive radiator and a 6.5 inch active woofer in a sealed box that weighs a bit less than the PSW111.
In general, until recently, a Velodyne higher model, i.e., 500+ dollar sub will trump the PSW Polk series.
Where Polk has improved is in its NEW series DSW and DSW Micro pro. In that the R&D that went into these subs was intended to thrust Polk subs into Velodyne territory. To compete 'equally' with such manufacturers. The DSW do compare favorably with Velos digital series, and the DSW Micropros are one heck of a sub for such a small footprint, but they're also costly. These higher ends subs are the best Polk has ever made. And people should be taking them seriously.

Well sadly cnh I can't get to the upper tier of subs yet, which is why I asked a very specific question, velodyne impact mini or psw111? 80% HT - 20% MUSIC is about what I use my system for......onkyo 606- R30 front- M30 rear- CS2 cent- but thanks for the refresher course on subs I can't even think about!! lol
I haven't heard that Velo mini-impact. But I can say that the PSW 111 would do you fine in a mid-smaller room.
It's fast, punchy, and I'm pretty sure I've seen it on the net for as little as 169 which puts is way below the Velodyne in price.
I don't remember where I saw that price...but I'd do some searches.

Ok cool cnh, I should just get that psw111 and not get in over my head!! yet.
