Pretty sure my dad has that boxset. I can't stand Shostakovich even on a good day. Everything he wrote sounds like Gulag to me. Like a bad Yakoff Smirnoff joke.

Classical isn't for everyone thats a given.
Not all Classical hasta be fast tempo to be enjoyable.
But that's what some like.....I do too when the mood strikes me.
I just like something to relax after a long day many times.
Sometimes I feel a lil down and need a pick me up....then the up tempo works for me.
Opera is one avenue of Classical I only like once in while......very long while!
Wife likes Pavoratti......personally I can't stand Him.

For whatever reason, and it certainly is not maturity, I have almost completely stopped listening to rock and rap, and almost exclusively listen to classical. I would have never spent the money and time building up the 2 channel living room stereo if not for my new fondness of classical.
This CD looks like a good addition, and might be iPod/Wadia worthy if it meets my minimum classical criteria; no singing. While I love the music I despise the singing. So, is this CD set just music, or is there singing on it?

Good news. Thanks.
I have a number of individual CDs of Dvorak, and enjoy them all, so I suspect you will like the 6 CD set.

Yeah, Jim; you'll likely really enjoy Kertesz's Dvorak readings. I don't own the complete set, but I've at least listened to all of them. Probably the ones that I enjoyed most were the 4th, 7th and 8th symphonies and Scherzo Capriccioso.

Thanks for the heads up Buddy....I'll report my listening once I get it in the ole CD player. ;)
See what you got me back into?:)

Bought this a couple weeks ago on the bay (different seller), came home today from some travel and it was waiting for me. Just sat here going through the forum and listening to CD1 on my iSonic right now(no critical listening or anything) and I must say, I like it- sounds good.

Possibly, it was part of a $500 order of SACDs, and a few CDs.

Very good, Fox. Would like to have your impressions of some of the classical items. Although I have a fairly extensive collection, I'm always looking for more, preferably at bargain sale prices.

I loved the String Quartets so much I bought the 10 CD box set of all his symphonies. Boy, was that a mistake. They suck (critical term). Actually, if you like horns and singing they are probably great, but I prefer strings and no singing.
Once I finish listening to all 10 I am going to give this away, assuming the next 7 CDs suck as bad as the first three.

Fox, exactly which set did you buy? It's generally not a good idea to just buy a complete set of a composer's symphonies since individual discs can usually be selected which have better performances. As far as the symphonies themselves, they vary in quality, but many of them are great in my view as well as that of most classical listeners. I especially enjoy and have multiple performances of the 1st, 5th, 7th, and 10th. On the other hand, for example, I don't care for the 2nd, 3rd and 13th and don't own any of them.
Since you enjoyed the string quartets I'll suggest two of my favorites that you should also enjoy: the beautiful Debussy and Ravel Quartets (http://tower.com/ravel-debussy-string-quartets-chilingirian-quartet-cd/wapi/106417502) and three of the most popular quartets, by Borodin, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky (http://tower.com/dvor-k-tchaikovsky-borodin-quartets-emerson-string-qt-quartet-cd/wapi/106014821)(also available from Amazon, of course).

While I am sure they are great if that is what you like, my problem with the Symphonies is I am not a fan of horns (trumpets, etc.), and singing in classical music.
The recordings themselves are fine so far. I will certainly look into your suggestions. Thanks.
This is the box set.
