I am in the middle of building a new home audio system. So far I have purchased fronts (RTIA5,s) and a reciever (Yamaha RX-V861). I am concerned that the Yamaha is not going to have enough power when I get rears, center etc....

I know a guy who is selling a Carver c-4000 channel amp and I have the following questions;

1. Even though it is an old pre amp will it work to add more power?

2. How do I wire it to my yammy? I have pre outs but have never wired a pre amp

Note: I have pre outs for L & R and for surround.

A pre won't add power. You need to hook an amplifier to the preouts if that's what you want. Or you could get the Carver and separate amps.

I have the same receiver and run the A5's and a A6 (center) and 2 rc85i in wall speakers on my setup.
The yammy powered these speakers easily BUT were a bit on the bright side for my A5's I ended up buying another 2 channel amp to power my A5's(as suggested on this forum) so that I could possibly tone down the brightness.

The addition of the extra amp helped the yammy and toned the brightness down incredibly.

BTW I ran with just the yammy receiver for almost a year with no complaints, you'll be fine with that setup.
