View Full Version : Noobie question about crossover frequency on receiver.
When I set my denon's crossover to 150hz for the fronts, 150 for the center and 150 for the rears and surrounds, does that mean that 150 is as low as they will play, before sending the lower signals to the sub?
And when my LFE is set to 80, is that as high as frequency as it will play?
I have RM8's for fronts and surrounds, and a csi a4 for center(RTi A5's on the way). On the spec sheet it say's lower -3db limit 130 hz. Does that mean that my crossover should be set at 130?
I know these are very basic questions, but the last time I built a nice system, was 1990. A lot has changed since then, and I've forgotten everything I once knew anyways.

With the crossovers on the speakers set at 150, and the crossover on the sub at 80, you aren't getting any of sounds between 80-150 hz.
To answer your question...yes. With the crossovers on the speakers set at 150, the lowest they will play is 150 hz. The opposite with the sub, set at 80, the highest it will go is 80 hz.
I'd set them all at 80 hz myself. The speakers and the sub. That's basically considered the happy medium as for as XO settings in HT receivers. There are variations of course, depending on your personal preferences. Just play around with it a little bit and see what you like best.
Your system will be massively improved once you get those A5's though. Good call.
Until you get your new speakers you will have a hole in your sound, as Curt points out, between 80-150hz so, for NOW, keep your settings for the crossover at 150.
When the Rti-A5s arrive you can drop to 80hz because then your 3 fronts will be able to handle that range. If I'm not mistaken those fronts are good to 60hz or below?

Setting the crossovers to 80 hz on his current speakers won't hurt them at all. They just likely won't be able to play all the way down to 80 hz. It will help to close the gap off some though.
The freq. response on the A5's is 30hz to 27khz if I recall correctly. However, they're not real stellar at reproducing the real low frequencies, so you'd be best off crossing them at around 80 hz and letting the sub handle everything below that point.
Thanks guys. I Assumed that's what everything meant, but wasn't sure. This forum is a fountain of knowledge, and it's putting a major dent in my wallet.
