I have a Yamaha 6140 avr. It doesn't have a place to hook up an amp. But on the front there is a place that says portable. It accepts a 3.5 mm. I remember reading something about hooking up an amp kind of like this. Something about plugging in the cable and if the speakers play, then an amp would work. Not sure if I want to do this, but just wondering if it would work. I have the cable and plugged it in already. The speakers still play.

Preamp outputs are what you are looking for.

Looking at the owner manual for your AVR you do not have pre-outs.

You are referring to the headphone output. It will work to power an amp, but the signal may become distorted when driven hard. Too many amplified sections working in the chain for great sound.

Thanks. I wasn't planning on using an amp but just wondering if it would work.
