Tuesday was one of the worst episodes I've seen of this show. Those "judges" get paid MILLIONS to do what is essentially nothing, the ONLY important part of their job is whittling 5 million people down to 24 (or this year 36) and these are the talentless schlubs they come up with?

I am so glad that Tatyana is gone, what a pain to see here throwing her temper tantrum. But, I am sure it's part of those Senjaya's scam to be controversial.
Can't stand her, and she was so upset last night, as if she ever had a chance to begin with. :rolleyes
bobman1235

She might not be "gone", there's still the wildcard round where they're going to pick three more people for the Top 12 out of the ones who are eliminated.

I'm right there with you, I can't stand her either, and she's obviously only on the show as a ridiculous novelty. If they do bring her back for the wild card (which I beleive is all in the judges' hands) it will be painfully obvious that they're doing it just to mock her.

I like Robert Downey Jr. I haven't heard him hit a bad note yet. It's really pretty funny how much he looks like him. My friends and I just all call him that. That may not be a good thing for him identity wise.

It just amazes me that after so many thousands of people and auditions and judging that there can still be SUCK when it come to the live broadcast.
Well I thought Tuesday was one of the worst shows in American Idol history. I mean they keep touting this as the most diverse and greatest groups of singers, and by the looks of it I thought they were right. But you had 4 people that sang good and the rest were horrible.
You had Danny, Alexis, Ricky, and Tatiana sing well. Yes I said it, Tatiana actually was good despite the hate she brings out of people, me included. Danny and Alexis deserved going through, but Michael Sarver? I mean he is obviously the peoples choice, but Braddy sang way better than him. Sarver was karoake average at best.
Anoop...cmon man, a slow song whe you said you like to livin' people up? Stevie...wretched, Casey...made Stevie look like Stevie Nicks, Brent Keith...Hick Town??!! Are you kidding me? Stephen Fowler...should have never made it to the show after forgetting his words at Hollywood week! And singing an MJ song...the judges hate it when contestants do MJ or Whitney, have you people never watched the show before? Jackie Tohn...sorry hightops and black spandex can only be worn by Joan Jett. She looked ridiculous. Ann Marie was above average but really did not do enough to get past Alexis.
What was a little comical to me is twice Simon torched the AI band for their awful arrangements.
And bruss you are right, Gokeys best friend should have made it, especially over Fowler. How the judges said he did not do enough to get in is beyond me. I thought he was a lock.

I've only seen a few of the audition rounds, but as to how some of the contestants are there.........ALL of the reality shows get input from the Judges, but the actual final decisions are made by the producers.
If you're going to create a show, there's gotta be some irritation in the mix to keep people talking (i.e. Sanjaya)........
bobman1235
02-25-2009, 06:00 PM
If you watched the auditions last year, Sanjaya really wasn't bad. It was only when the live shows started (in which case, at least they claim, all decisions are made by the voting public, not the judges or producers or anyone) that he started to be horrible.

Since I started watching the show in the third season (I think) I have to admit that I am somewhat of an Idol fan. There's something about watching a train wreck that has a certain appeal and the Idol has plenty of head-ons!
Tonights show was just about as painful as it can get..which made it entertaining to me. lol

Uggggh. SO ridiculous. They just brought her on to watch her melt down again - tomorrow's show has no viewer voting, only judges choosing, and there's no way they choose her.

03-05-2009, 10:21 AM
The show was not really developed to showcase talent. It was pioneered in the UK as a format within which Simon Cowell could RIDICULE contestants. That format had to be de-tuned for the US crowd by injecting a bit more talent, but still having a high percentage ripe for Simon's ridicule.

My money is on Lambert this week. What a performance!
bobman1235
03-11-2009, 07:44 AM
While i have to concede Lambert is good, boy do I not like him. Everything about his image makes my skin crawl. The emo / glam look coupled with a massive level of arrogance.
I wish the judges weren't so hard on Megan this week; while I agree it was a horrible song choice I still want that girl to stick around, she's got such a unique voice (and is amazingly hot).
I also thought Gokey lived up to a lot of the hype that I wasn't sure he deserved.

Lambert seems to have an old school Metal kind of voice. Actually I can't wait until he does some GNR stuff-He definitely sounds like Axl Rose. To me he goes overboard a bit with the 'screams' but overall not bad. He's growing on me a bit-I definitely did not care for him at all early on. We shall see.
In general its amazing to me how the judges swoon over certain contestants while being overly critical of others (when undeserving)--The judges are really grating on my nerves this season esp. Cara-But Simon has toned down a bit from seasons past and I find myself agreeing with him more often than not.

I think Danny Gokey has major chops. That guy can just flat out sing. Adam has a good voice, but I agree w/those who find him over the top on just about every level. Though many seemed to like it, I thought he should've been arrested for his take last week on "Satisfaction."

03-11-2009, 01:39 PM
Well I just got done watching it. Anoop is done, why Beat It? As for the other one....I have no idea. It could be Michael Sarver. Although he did really good, he may be the one that gets over looked.
But I have to admit, despite Anoop this has to be one of the better top 12's in AI history. A ton of talent, and very diverse talent at that. And it really looked like it was going to be a let down this year, but for the most part I really enjoyed all of the performances this week. I thought everyone did really good...aside from Anoop.

Amen. His all-out cheese factor reminds me of Constantine but with a false humility that Constantine, thankfully, lacked. Great voice. Horrible persona.
I think Danny and Matt are the guys to watch while Alexis and Allison are the girls.

Couldn't agree more. Best 12 ever (And Anoop is the 13th, so I'm not counting him).
Lambert? Yes, he can definitely sing and hit those high notes incredibly good, But think (and hope) that his attitude and looks will weight on him and bring him down before week 10. What kind of role model is a guy with black nails?
All the others IMO have a good chance; the ones that stay will grow week by week, and it's anyone game so far.
I love Megan's voice. There's something so special about her.

Ditto-I had the same picks. Shocked I am . At least one end up in the bottom.
I like Danny Gokey's sound/voice, but there is something about him I can't stand. Not sure if its the glasses or what-seems like he is a bit too sure of himself-perhaps too cocky. I think it started when at the end of Hollywood week in the chair in the Mansion when being told if he made it to the final 36 or not, the judges asked him if he thought he was relevant (or something like that) and he reacted "pfft-I know I am relevant" (or something like that) either way it left the impression with me that he felt he was a gift to the competition-self righteous or something.
I felt the same way about David Cook last season, but eventually he humbled himself and then he came out with some really good stuff and I grew to like him as an artist.

Damn, it was like he conjured Robert Plant, Axel Rose, Bono and a few unknown sopranos all into one possessed voice. But it was memorable, and he certainly was making an "I will never compromise the rocker in me" statement to the "country folk"!
bobman1235
03-18-2009, 10:50 AM
Big deal, you can play the "I won't compromise" card without coming off as a total jackass. David Cook did it last year, Chris Daughtry the year before that, and they both at least respected the material, rather being like glam-boy and telling the entire country music scene to go eff itself.

bobman1235
03-18-2009, 02:28 PM
I don't mind Adam's look - certainly not my style by any stretch but as Caligula said, it fits him - I just hate his attitude. He's full of himself. And no American Idol is not about who's the best singer, it's about who the viewers like the best (based on whatever criteria they use to judge). Very few of the past winners have been the best pure singers or performers, they just have that 'je ne sais quoi' that makes people like and enjoy them. Even if you get away from Idol and look at popular music, if the people who are popular are the most talented musicians in America we're doomed; instead they just have a combination of something that makes them appealing to a large group of people.
Adam has awesome stage presence and a great voice, but he acts like a world-class asshole, and that does NOT endear you to many people.

I think Anoop and Kris Allen really knocked em out lastnight.
Matt at the end did real well, as well as the young redhead, but I think everyone expected them too. Which is what made me think the other two (Anoop and Kris) really stood out. That one blonde girl with the odd dancing/seizuring is begining to get on my nerves, almost as much as the he/she is.
Sarver is starting to really fall flat, kinda disappointed with his last few performance's.

Brook White nailed that song last season. I even bought it from iTunes (one of 3 ever and the other 3 were from the same season and only because that was the only way to get them) :o
Gotta give Alexis a little cred for putting more emotion into the song instead of singing it the same way during her possible judges save attempt. She did it way too over the top, but she tried. I was surprised she was in the bottom three.
Its sad, you could see the look of distraght in her face when sitting in the final 3 stools. Then when they mentioned a possible save for either her or Sarver, she looked like she knew that she had it in the bag, she immediately perked up--but alas.
I'm also surprised Allison was in the bottom 3. Hmmm.
I still simply can't believe Scott is still in it, and now on the tour no less. Same kinda thing happened in the season, I forget her name now but she got pushed out of the final 10 for the tour by Sanjaya IIRC. Could be a WFTW thing-haven't checked it lately.
I don't know about Adam still. I thought the performance was certainly interesting-kinda 60-70ish-kinda Led Zep (as Paula said Kashmir-ish), perhaps a bit Arthur Brown (maybe it was the fire thing). I wouldn't say it was horrible. I actually kinda liked it (well the 2nd half anyway) I guess I'll have to hear it again.
Anoop-Dog actually redeemed himself.
I did not care for Gokey's performance. Lacked....anything really.

I honestly think the quirky dancing style of Megan must be a hold over from her childhood that just kinda stuck. I am really liking her voice--kinda like Zooey Dechanel.
I try not to get too hung up on how a person performs (not sings), dresses, moves, etc when it comes to a singing competition--singing is the main factor for me. I think there's room for improvement later with all the other peformance, appearance stuff. Its a lot to ask of these contestants learning the songs, commercials, groups songs and dances, arrangments, etc, etc. Most of the time for me, I hear music I like before I ever see the person or band performing it. Actually with some bands/singers that's a good thing.
Of course I also realize that the public is voting so they have to appeal to the voters but-JMHO

I don't believe they have much of effect on the voting but who knows. I find the whole thing very sad; if you hate the show why dedicate all that time to breaking its voting? (the answer is probably that the site makes a lot of money from pageviews)

Wow, I actually watched a show on the same night it aired--(I usually DVR it)
My impressions from tonight:
Adam Lambert - Awesome (and a standing ovation from the Smokey himself!!:cool: )
Allison Iraheta - Pretty Good
Anoop Desai - Awesome (say what?)
Danny Gokey - Better than last week
Kris Allen - Pretty Dang Good
Lil Rounds - Hmm, good in parts but 'off' throughout most of the song
Matt Giraud - Awesome
Megan Joy - I like her voice but something was 'off' for her tonight as well.
Michael Sarver - Boring
Scott MacIntyre - He has got to go.
My pics for the bottom 4:
Megan Joy - I hope she sticks around but does better
Lil Rounds - She's got potential-but need polishing
Michael Sarver - He really needs a good country song
Scott MacIntyre - I'm thinking maybe a good Motley Crue cover song in his honor.
Favorite Judges comments (from memory):
Kara: "This competition is not about singing...."
Ryan to Paula: "What else do you have under the desk?
Paula's response: "..just what's under my skirt" then delayed realization as to what she just said.:D

I am constantly amazed at this show and its popularity....and not in a good way. My wife and daughter watch it so I see and hear bits and pieces. I usually walk away thinking I would never buy music performed by that artist. The vocal butchering of some great (and not so great) songs seems to be the norm. I overheard the show a few nights ago from the other room and thought there was a contest to see how many octaves the singers could reach on a single syllable word. I know a couple of the contestants have had some modest success...but most simply have their 15 minutes of fame (or infamy)...and nothing more. Just not my thing I guess.

IMO, last night Adam Lambert took a huge step forward & apart from the pack. I haven't cared for him, but last night he was really smart in singing such a different song. & He nailed it.
Matt & Chris stepped it up, Danny stayed about the same & Lil was just eh.
& Though I think that Megan could really do the singer songwriter stuff (Carole King comes to mind), she just hasn't yet found what she sings best & I'm done with her.
I thought Alison did a great job on "Papa."
My bottom 3: Megan, Michael & Scott. I bet Michael goes back to the oil rig...

Makes sense to me though. They are under tight schedules. I can't imagine having to do everything the contestants have to do. Its not like they didn't sing it at all.
And it is only during the group performance(s) which is not judged, so I'm OK with it.

No I think Ryan said something to the fact that they had performed it earlier when he was introducing the song. I only know that because I thought to myself "why the freak are they doing it this way?" Or maybe when he introduced the song they were all still sitting on the couch. I cannot remember exactly....but it was very obvious it was pre-recorded.
All the songs the contestants have performed together since the top twelve has been lip synced. That part has been very obvious.

Man, I really didn't care for the performances tonight. I'm not sure why.
My impressions from tonight:
Kris Allen - Pretty Dang Good - For me the best tonight.
Adam Lambert - Interesting-I liked it but stil a little over the top with to much of the high end.
Allison Iraheta - Pretty Good again, The hair was alright but I have to agree on the outfit .
Matt Giraud - Seemed nervous and shakey throughout.
Danny Gokey - Better than last week again - still heard him crack in the high notes-not sure why the judges aren't hearing that.
Anoop Desai - Didn't care for it. I felt exactly as Simon judged it. Just didn't fit.
Lil Rounds - Hmm, good in parts but again 'off' throughout most of the song- like shakey execpt during the power notes-Seemed she was struggling getting the vibrato going as well.
Megan Joy - Way way off tonight. Awful even-And she didn't even recognize :(
Scott MacIntyre - He still has got to go.
My pics for the bottom 3: No change here
Megan Joy - I hope she sticks around but does better
Lil Rounds - She's got potential-but need polishing
Scott MacIntyre Yeay 80's ;)
I don't know WTH the judges are doing this season. Oddly enough, Simon seems to be the only one with any sense calling the bluffs of the other judges. Its always the same damn thing - "not the right song choice" or its about the way they dressed (OK comment but don't judge the performance on the way they dressed), or its about stage presense, 'don't stand behind the mic stand, 'the best tonight' (even if they were the first singer) or like with Anoop tonight-the way they compared him to Usher because he didn't dance around like Usher. I mean really-this is a singing competition-not a freakin talent show. I think they should judge them on the performance of the song they chose, not the choice of the song.
I think its pretty clear who the Judge's favs are.
I think that the judges should take a look at the song choices as soon as they're made and provide comments or song suggestions ahead of time.

She's trying not to move them because when she does she flops around in a weird way. I'm sure they said something to her.
Allison rocks!!! The outfit was weird though but I was pissed that was all they were talking about. She reminds me of Pink. She's awesome. Adam was FABULOUS girl! Not my cup of tea but he is very talented. Can't take that away.
Anoop was Asnooze. Chris was surprisingly the best performance of the night. He is really coming along and could really surprise us. Danny -( ok Michael McDonald/ Ironman ) was solid and Matt has a very good voice. He just wants to sing something that it's not AS suited for. He wasn't as bad as they said. Kris: Keeps comin' on & getting better. Needs to lose the "scrunchy" face thing.
Adam: Great voice, just can't stand what he does with it. Don't like screeching.

Danny is a close 3rd with a great sounding voice, but he lacks stage presence. Pretty boring to watch for me.

I absolutely agree with your 3,2,1 analysis and the rest are just filling space. Adam will become a "signature voice" artist. Looks like he's pretty similar to Freddy Mercury when seeing his theatrical home videos as a child. I'd even bet he'll tear up a Freddy Mercury/Queen song in the finals. I was never a fan of Freddy Mercury's personal life and choices that led to his death, but his music and performing were incredible. Hopefully Lambert doesn't meet the same end.

On the subject of AI, I had to make a quick one week trip to Singapore, a couple of weeks ago, and AI is also big over there, broadcasted within a few hours after the East Coast feed, on their prime-time slot on Thursday and Friday night. I was there when they boot out Alexis. My point is, I thought it is interesting when many folks outside the US root for the same idols, and follow them closely as if theirs.
Yes, Scott needs to go. Great voice, no personality and ackwardly painful to see him smile. He needs to be nurtured outside the realm of AI competition.

That GOW pre-release from a couple of years ago sold a boatload of games; it was awsome.
Also awesome was Adam's choice of that song and how he absolutely nailed it. A bit of Freddie Mercury in there. Both musically and with his stage domination, he's got his ticket to the final sewn up, IMO.

Allison is my 2nd favorite. Unlike some other's opinions, I think she's cuter than heck; pure genuineness, WYSIWYG, she commands the stage when's she's on it, has a voice that has quite a range, and ...... she's only 16 !

I've said it before that I can't stand Scott, but its funny that when he sang on Tues, I again thought it was awful, but when he sang for his second chance on Wed., I actually thought he sang it well-well at least much much better than the first time. Well there was one really bad high note. But still he needed to go. Maybe Disney will higher him.
I think Allison and Adam will be the top 2.
Its hard to say who will go home next-I'll have to wait until next weeks performances to see who 'blows it out da box'. The competition's getting tough. As said some of the frontrunners have fallen back.
I'd say that the group performance was live this time-it just didn't sound right.
When Flo Rida was talking about his album or show, did AI blank him out?

When Adam sang during Motown week, did anybody else see a striking resemblance to:
Elvis and/or Kurt Russell?
I've only ever heard a few Natashia Bedingfield songs and I probably woudn't have made the comparison otherwise, but does anybody else think that her song "Soulmate (http://www.amazon.com/Pocketful-Sunshine-Natasha-Bedingfield/dp/B000Y14U4M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1239258535&sr=8-1)" sounds a lot like Megan Joy's sound?

My wife and I noticed that too. It might have been a bad mic, which could explain why he almost sounded out of breath in a couple places in his performance. I think it's pretty clear the deal with AI is that you get to promote the hell out of your new album, so I can't see them censoring that.

It's interesting to note when a given contestant "hits the wall", the point at which they are unable to leave their comfort zone and make changes for the better. Lil has certainly reached that point. Anoop on the other hand went from bottom 3 material a few weeks ago to a solid #3 or #4.

As much as Allison can sing, she can't connect to the voters. Hence, my prediction is that she would be gone before the final.

I'm more Adam, Allison, Danny in the top 3 with Adam winning, but you make a good point that Allison doesn't seem to connect with America. Matt is definitely weakest.
What were the producers trying to do with those horrible performers they trotted out on stage last night? They were nearly unwatchable. I almost had to turn it off but it was like a gruesome car wreck that you hated see, but couldn't take your eyes off of.

I think Matt will go next week, then Allison the next. That leaves Adam, Danny and Kris. Of them, I don't know. The judges (mostly) love Adam for his histrionics and theatrics. Granted he does have a good voice and can nail those high notes. Personally, I get tired of his banshee wail he manages to put into every performance. Also, I don't care for his theatrical performances. Just sing the song! So I hope he goes in three weeks, leaving the two "nice guys", Danny and Kris. Of those two, I hope Kris wins. He has a unique ability to take a well-known song, re-cast it and make it his own. Plus, his "aw shucks" demeanor is charming and and the chicks dig him. What more could you want in your next American Idol?
Oh yeah, I agree that the "disco legends" they had on were lame, lamer and lamest. It's a shame performers can't dress "age appropriate", and even more of a shame they don't know when to hang it up altogether.

I think Allison connects just fine. I don't know why they say that but I think they 'lead' votes to steer toward their favorites. At least Simon. He is a producer and the bottom line is $$$$$$. Haha, here's some hyperbole for everyone :
From the LA Times (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/americanidoltracker/2009/04/the-rushfield-review-disaster-averted.html) of all things.
We will never know how close “American Idol’s” eighth season came to disaster Wednesday night. Had Adam Lambert been eliminated last night, a grieving nation would have spent all eternity shaking their heads in disbelief, haunted by the specter of what might have been.… In the annals of “Idol” tragedy – grim pages recounting the dark moments of Daughtry, of Hudson, of Grey — tonight could have marked the bleakest chapter yet for our republic. [...]
To take stock — first of all, while we pause, shaken by the almost cataclysm, let us not forget that to avert this disaster, we were forced to make a tragic Sophie’s choice, giving to Angel of Death Seacrest one of the most likable talents ever to grace the Idoldome. The judges’ use of the wild card and the save on Matt will go down, as Kara said, as the judges’ profiles in courage, bestowing a young man of grace, panache and good humor on our nation.

I thought Kris was hitting some bad notes last night. It also appears that, during the duet with Danny, that he forgot the lyrics for a moment then recovered; that or he had some really odd timing-I did'nt like it over all--It also seemed like Kris and Danny were fighting for volume-to stand out.
Danny's solo was not good for me--he just seems to keep getting to the top of his range and is belting it too often. I like him much better in the lower range. And yes that final note was definately horrid.
I thought Allison did very well tonight-I really like her voice and she has greta stage presence-like Slash said she had good rock swagger (or something like that).
I like Adam tonight as well, but it didn't wow me like other nights--He just goes over the top a bit to much. But it definately rocked.
Man when I heard Slash was the mentor and rock was the category-I seriously thought that Adam would for sure choose a GnR song. His upper range is so similar to Axl Rose. I'm not sure what value Slash added as a mentor to the show though.
Based on last night I also think Kris is going home. Then probably Danny, then its between Allison and Adam in the final.

Eh, the show bugged me.
I've never been an Adam fan at all - I know he's got a great voice - but I just don't like what he does with it. He's just too over the top & theatrical for my taste. I'm just waaaay done w/him.
I found it interesting that they stuck Kris & Danny together for a duet, two guys who don't do rock, which the judges all too frequently pointed out when they didn't do very well together. "I know, it's just not your thing." But then they stick Adam & Allison together, two people who DO rock, & then the judges heap praises on them. Just seems like stacking the deck. Of course Adam & Allison are going to sound the best. Why not put a rocker w/a non rocker? Seems more fair to me. I'm not even close to being a conspiracy guy, but it just sorta smacked of trying to set Adam & Allison up for the final. Eh, jus sayin'.
& Yeah, what was Danny thinking? Hind sight's always 20/20, but I'd rather hear some Bad Company or Lynyrd Skynrd out him. I believe in stretching one's limits, but not breaking them.
Tonight's vote outta be interesting...

Personally, I thought Kris did very well with "Come Together" and in fact, I thought he won the week. It wasn't the best song for him, but he pulled it off.
Adam is unique, I'll give him that. But he's way over the top with the theatrics -all the mugging, sneering and over-emoting! ...And that tomcat yowl, every...freakin'...WEEK! ...Puh-leeeze!
Danny picked a bad song for him. I'd say he's lucky to survive. But he has many fans, including me.
I could barely hear Alison over all the noise. Somebody had to go, so I guess since the judges can't stop salivating over Adam for five seconds, and America really loves Danny and Kris, she was up against it. She'll be OK, though, with that big voice.
Yeah, I thought Paula's lip-synching was lame. She also seemed to be using the Cher-effect (you know the perfect-pitch machine)...I'm tired of that, too.
Gwen reminded me of The Boss at the Superbowl halftime show: all out of breath from the runnin' around and kinda just sloppin' through the song...Also lame.

My crystal ball failed me. I guess I underestimated the problem of Allison failure to "connect" with the voters. Out of 64 Millions votes, if 60 percents of those are teenagers under the age of 21, and out of those population, 80 percents are girls who voted on average five times per idols per week, hmmm, Allison's fate was sealed.

Kris ? About as exciting as watching dry spaghetti noodles soak up water .... with the stove off.
Simon: "Do you think you should still be here ?"
Kris: "Well ....idunnokindofsortof....hadfunsortofkindofneatto singstuff ...andwhatnot....youknow.....gollygeewillikers.... .."
I took the liberty of paraphrasing his answer, but ....
Allison should have finished #2 but America simply does not relate to her. If she had toned down her appearance 3 or 4 weeks ago (I know, it's a compromise when you are 17), I think she would still be alive. Kris' mouth looks dorky and like he is in pain when he sings. He should have been the one to go.

That 'thing' they were talking about with Allison not relating, is part of the reason I like her so much. I'm tired of the pageant. She's cool and her own person. Different. Rock on.

I can't stand much more of Madam Lambert. His over dramatic out-of-control facial expressions, his untamed tongue that always seems to appear on high notes, and his operatic arrangements that only serve to show off his corny metal range rather than good taste, are just too much.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wins but I would be dissapointed.

I think it's anyone's show right now.

Looks like Adam and Danny in the Finals.

I think Kris should win. Adam's the most talented, but I would never WANT to listen to him sing. I don't even see the big deal about Danny at all, I don't think he's that great; kinda one-note, really. NOt literally, but everything he does just sounds exactly the same. Kris is the only one who I can imagine buying an album of.

If Adam has a better "personality", would you consider buying his record, Bob?

Too much screaming from Adam and yelling from Danny. I'm voting for Kris.
