View Full Version : PCM 2 channel vs Dolby true HD is something wrong?
I just bought the Dave mathews and tim reynolds at the hard rock cafe blue ray. It has PCM 2 channel, dolby digital, and dolby true HD 5.1. The true Hd sounds pretty good, but the PCM sounds like crap. Could my ps3 be messing up the PCM somehow. I don't have any other PCM 2 channel disks to listen to. And I really like my music in 2 channel better.
When I switch to the PCM everything distorts very easily, vocals, guitars, everything. The concert isn't the greatest recording ever, but it is a great live recording. It falls a little short of the luthern college sound, but it is good.
Anyway, why would the PCM sound so bad?
Has anyone else had any trouble with the PCM 2 channel on the ps3?
I've done some more listening to the disk, and I think it's just a horrible mix. Even in true hd the audio is still hissing and crackling. I almost think I got a bad copy or something. The reviews I read about it, all said it was the best audio they had ever heard on blue ray.
Maybe I'm wrong, but if anyone else has this blue ray, please let me know how yours sounds.

I think there are some audio settings on the PS3 that boost audio levels - I can't remember exactly what they are called.
You may want to go into your PS3 settings to see if you can find the audio levels and adjust them down - sounds like the PS3 is set to boost the levels into overdriving which is causing the bad crackling you are hearing.

After playing with everything more, I'm just sending the disk back to amazon. There is no way that it should sound like it does. I have never received any kind of disk, or heard of anyone receiving a disk with corrupted audio on it, but hopefully that's what's wrong.

Go into the audio setup on your ps3 and set it to bitstream.

I noticed some distortion on The Dark Knight and I honestly had thought I had damaged my system. It turns out, somehow the volume control got boosted up to +2 or whatever the highest setting is which was overmodulating the signal before it even hit the receiver.

It is kind of hard to see but you want to hit the triangle button during playback, go to the speaker icon and make sure to set it to unity gain. (0)
Go into the audio setup on your ps3 and set it to bitstream.
That will force the receiver to handle the decoding and it will limit the audio to AC3, DTS, and 2CH PCM and he says it is distorting on all formats.
