Planning to buy a new player which is better, My usage is both Movies and Music almost in equal terms, Please suggest if any of you have used which is better and why, need to order today (The bug has bitten again):D The reason for restricting to both is am getting a good deal on these, Denon is New and Yamy will be a used store display unit.

Denon and Yamaha receivers have a huge number of fans here but maybe not so much on the DVD front. PS3, Sony, Oppo, Pioneer, and Panasonic seem to be the prevalent boxes. Sorry.

I had the Yamaha DVD-S1700 last year. It had trouble reading any DVDR's after it had been on a while (warmed up), constant pausing and picture dropouts. I returned it for another, and it had the exact same issue.

I also tried the Denon, it seemed to work great, until it refused to power on a week later. Denon players are known for reliability issues. At it's current price of $85, you may want to give it a try, not much to lose.

Should i pull the Trigger on Denon

I am also itching to pull the trigger on an universal player since I currently have no DVD-Audio playback capability (I have 3 Sony SACD/DVD/CD players though). However, I have decided to skip on the Denon based on the reported reliability issues I read about. For a little bit more money, I'd rather get the Oppo 980 since it will give me more decoding options (such as HDCD) and an "upgrade" path (i.e. DSD transmission by one single HDMI cable). Also, Oppo seems to provide excellent customer service over the long haul.

And if you want a "name brand" universal player, Vanns.com also has the Onkyo 506 universal player that does DSD by HDMI for $200.00 shipped.

Way over my budget, i was considering just a generic DVD with upscale and hdmi, i came across Denon 1940 for 89 +shipping free, oppo is again not justifiable double the price than denon, still contemplating, tomorrow will be the day.

I picked up a Denon DVD-2910 off eb for about $150. It needed a good cleaning but now I am very pleased.

I am a Denon fan but I am sure Yamaha has some good stuff too.
