Is that sub any good? Never heard them.Absolutely, positively and without a doubt, yes. Great for HT and 2 channel listening. I'm currently running it in my rig and have absolutely not one gripe whatsoever. Not even one.
I have the Odyssey Stratos currently powering it with the Velo SMS-1 to match it to the mains and the room. The SC's I'm using are a pair of AQ CV-8's with the 72v bat. pack. Previously I had the Carver M1.5t, the 4.0t and the M1.0t powering it and surprisingly all of the amps did that sub justice.

It will make the 505 seem like a Bose cube speaker.

With shipping, it might be a tad expensive though...
Just correction this is not the same Larger sub available new today...
This is the Larger Tall Boy without Megawoofers --
That sub is probally capable of 110db at 20hz easy with a good amp for movies.
It will smoke a PSW505

How does it compare to PSW505?
From what I have heard from people it will blow the PSW505 away. But that being said....alot of subs will blow it away. Polk really isnt known for their subs. I cant remember the model but I had a POlk sub for one day. I was not impressed at all so I took it back the next day. FWIW;)

I picked this up today (three hours back and forth)!
Great condition, sounds great! havent yet had a chance to run it through Room EQ yet, but U-571 sounds great (playing right now). Mike was a great guy to talk to and he has impressive gear. We were listening to Floyd's "Us and them" on his Rega turntable!
Thanks for the heads-up and the reviews. I usually lurk in the Vintage speakers forum because of my SRS2s, but I am glad I checked out this forum. I'll try to put in a review in the coming weeks.

I live within spitting distance of this seller, what can anyone tell me about this sub. I've never heard of it/them before.

Go buy it gdb...and if you decide you don't like it in the future I'll take it and the amp off your hands.
Just make sure it is in tip top shape.
I can not tell you anything about that particular VMPS, but my guess is that for $150 obo and a Phase Linear Amplifier included, you can't go wrong. Sounds like a deal to me.
The VMPS Larger Tallboy I had was so sweet, I vowed to never even buy another sub unless it was a VMPS. Seriously.

Nice...let us know what you think. Was the amp worth anything?
I won't know anything for a while because I want to read up on dual voice coil do's and don'ts first. The amp is an old Phase Linear DRS 400 w/out the external fins and it has the spring clamp type of speaker terminals. I can't find too much about it or the sub online. (Yet)

Some of the VMPS subs have a built in crossover and some don't. I think it was an option. The built in one is around 80-90HZ, which to me is way too high. If I were you, I would bypass the crossover (if it even has one) and use an active one or the one on your AVR/Pre.
Was the VMPS in good shape?
It seems to be, I didn't hear it and the black painted oak top could use a shot of fresh lacquer and the cloth is less than perfect, but can't ask too much for $150.00. There is no crossover built in, just two pairs of binding posts on the back. This thing is HUGE, about the size of a compact fridge!
