Hi,
Anyone have suggestions on an 8" full range speaker for Scott 299C tube
amp? I have 8 ohm Electro-voice EV7A's but they suck, so I want to replace
the 8" full ranges in the cabinets. (Need a small cabinet like these to fit
in my bookcase). Looking for warm tube sound at low volume, with lots of harmonics!
Cheers

When I think of tubes, I think single full range driver (which I believe isn't what you asked about.) As to replacing a driver in an existing cabinet--you need to match the T/S parameters of the current driver in order to have it work right. Parts Express does sell a driver tester if you want to do that. Then you have to find a driver matching the required specs--no small task, as the manufacture's specs are often more fantasy than reality.
On the other hand, you could build a pair of speakers from scratch. I have enjoyed building speakers w/ full range drivers for the last couple of years. If you must have bookshelf sized speakers, check out the Fonken w/ Fostex FE127e (4.5" driver) at Planet 10 Hi-Fi. You can read about them at DIYaudio.com under loudspeakers/full range. For a couple hundred bucks total you can have exceptionally good sound--although they won't reach head-banger SPLs. But w/ a little tube amp, I'm guessing you weren't doing that w/ your old speakers anyway.
If you really want to go with an 8" driver (and getting into the 96+ dB range,) check out designs for Fostex FE206e and FE207e drivers (also in Planet 10's plans library.) Floor standers and big, but w/ slim profiles.
I should warn you: speaker building is an addiction! ;) Once you start, it's hard to stop.

IIRC, your 299C (nice piece, BTW) should output around 28 WPC. It's not a flea powered OTL. You could probably come up with a fairly efficient 2 way monitor design that would have you rock out with your c@ck out...
Just a thought...
I have a 299 that I use to drive some SDA CRS+'s, and it does a FINE job. YMMV...
