I just bought an Oppo DV-970 HD (http://www.oppodigital.com/dv970hd/dv970hd.html) to replace a Yamaha CDC-905 (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200281&CTID=5002100) mainly for CD and CD-R playback.

Did I make the right call?

Background: I will use the Oppo for upconverting DVD action too. The goal is too kill the CD and DVD player space for use by my turntable. A Marantz PM7001 is driving Polk R50s in this situation. Wire is appropriate, interconnects are Monoprice high-end and there is no power conditioner.

I couldn't say for sure. But the Oppo has DVD-Audio and SACD support that the Yamaha doesn't seem to have. And a lot of people like Oppo DVD players. So I don't think at that price level you're going to do that much better?

I have a higher model Yamaha Universal DVD player that sounds OK on CDs too, but can't compete with gear worth 500 or more new!

Anyone else.

I've read some good things about the Oppo's. Might not sound as good as a dedicated CD player, but tough to beat giving everything these universals can do. Curious, why didn't you go with the 980H for the same price?

Did you also consider the Pioneer Elite DV-49AV? It can play all formats (DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, SACD, MP3, WMA, MPEG4 AAC, WMV, CD-R/RW, DivX Ultra, JPEG) I don't think there is any better build quality at this price range than Pioneer Elite. The CD to USB rip feature is convenient too.

I got the Oppo DV-970HD from Audiogon at $70 delivered. I never considered any other player.

I got the Yamaha on Craigslist for $30 a few months ago. It's good but big and the Oppo seemed like a chance for equal or better audio quality plus good DVD playback.

If I have a chance to compare the Yammie and Oppo, I'll report back.

EDIT: The Marantz DV-4001 (http://us.marantz.com/Products/405.asp#) has popped up at $80 delivered from Onecall.com. So, given the match to my PM7001 integrated amp, should I try to move the Oppo listed above and grab the DV-4001 in my quest for best-sounding CD playback in a universal DVD player?

The goal is too kill the CD and DVD player space for use by my turntable.

A little late to be asking now, eh?

Love my Oppo, though I have recently started feeding its optical out to a ($79!) DAC from MCM Electronics and noticed a nice improvement in sound quality. But sound quality was pretty solid to begin with. You might be able to feed the optical or Coax output to your receiver/preamp/DAC to see if you get a noticeable improvement in sound. Jitter seems to be the issue with Oppos according to reviews I've read.

Oppo is extremely versatile, easily able to read all regions' DVDs and handles a myriad of formats.

I ended up selling the Oppo DV-970HD locally and buying the Marantz DV4001 for $80 from Onecall. The logic is: Find the best CD and CDR player that is also an upconverting DVD player to match my Marantz integrated amp. I own no DVD-A or SACD and never will.

So, I have a few turntable upgrades in mind, but it seems like it may also be time to upgrade the CD to amp interconnects.

So, which 3- to 6-foot good but reasonably priced interconnects should I buy?
