honestly, if I wanted to play russian roulette with my home theater, I would use bullets.
but instead, because i was dumb enough to buy into Sony techonogy, I get to play it with blue ray disks. 24.99 each? will it play, will it do nothing, will it let you hit play at the menu screen only to go back to the menu screen? who knows?
2 movies I bought so far that the Playstation 3 will just not play.
I just wanna watch a F*(KIN MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!
Sony, the day they go bankrupt, I'm going to have a kickin party at my house. chicks, guns, firetrucks....the works!

Do you have the lastest firmware update?
If so, that does suck.

yeah, thats probably it. the ps3 is in the theater so it isnt hooked up to the internet. which means I will have to unhook it to put it in another room with internet.
I dont have wireless, though I should
Sony still sucks.

Sony is only good for TV's and DVD/CD players.
Car stereos aren't bad but eveything else is over rated!
I learned over the years myself.

As others have stated, check the firmware first. Sony's stand alone blu-ray players have spotty records with disk compatibility. But the ps3 is pretty bulletproof as players go. The next thing to check would be dirty disks. If you flip the disk, look at the surface. Even one smudgy fingerprint can cause problems. I'd say smudge sensitivity is an area that the ps3 lags behind other players on, not its disk compatibility, as long as you've got the latest firmware.

I have owned the Ps3 for a long time now and I keep mine connected to the Internet all the time. there has been several firmare upgrades. I suggest you get a line into your theater room. Most gear is going ethernet anyway so it would be worth getting the service there. Or just buy a Wireless router and watch your problems go away.
By the way get with the times Bro:p
You live in new Jersey, I could come over and help you run that line. I'll even bring the cat 5. I got miles of it. I'll sell you some cheap.

That's a nice offer Dan, I'd take him up on it. It's great to have cat5 between rooms. And even services like ATT Uverse use it to bring TV channels into your house. A great alternative to cable if you've got it in your area as you can start playing cable and ATT off each other to get the best deals.

Just download the newest firmware onto a usb flash drive and take it to your PS3 and update it that way...no moving of the PS3 needed nor any hookup of your PS3 to the internet. If the blu ray drive isnt physically broken or the lens isnt dirty. the new firmware should fix your issues.
I have yet to put a disc in mine and have a single issue ( Oldest 60gb model ) .

I forgot you can do this, this would be the easiest fix to his problem. He could check from time to time while he is on the internet talking with us, could pull the latest firmware, then when he goes into the theater room, stick that bad boy in and now all problems are solved.
Good call man,

And with front usb ports on the PS3 , it makes it extremely easy to update the firmware if he doesnt have easy access to the rear of the unit. :D

Mantis, might take you up on that down the road
in the meantime though, the usb flash drive plan sounds like a winner. I havent upgraded the firmware since i've owned this thing
thanks for the heads up shadow :D

I'm very similar to your situation....my PS3 was primarily an xmas gift to my kids to play games, but it has doubled as the only BD player in my house...so far.
I did do an upgrade via a USB thumb drive on my own - relatively painless.
I'm an engineer and the last thing I want to do when I get home is f&#$ with computers and devices.
But, the PS3 was easy to upgrade and I got some features and fixes.
Still.....I agree....it does SUCK that ANY device should require the owner to spend precious time figuring out just what to do to make the frakin' thing just play a movie.
imho, BD is not ready for prime time to the masses....too many secrets and tricks....NO player is immune...or AVR for that matter.
Just in a cranky mood...

Definitely upgrade firmware, allot BDs have the cards in them that suggest latest and greatest firmware, they even show it as a splash screen before the title starts. PS3 is rock solid, sure it's firmware issue.

I've used a ps3 for bd for a year or so and never had an issue with getting a movie to play, and most of those were rentals. You either need to update fw or you got a bum unit.
As a follow up...does anyone know what date the last PS3 upgrade was issued. I haven't plugged mine into my DSL for about 3 weeks? Thanks...it's a pain to run the 25' cat5 to the unit.

I own two Sony dvd players and am about to order a blue ray player from them. Never had a problem playing movies on the two I already have, don't anticipate any problems with the new ones. My 2 cents.

As more players are released, there are fewer outright feature advantages the ps3 has over other players. But besides some downsides the ps3 had at launch like no multichannel analog outs or lossless decoding in the AVR via bitstreaming (ps3 handles lossless through on-board decoding), firmware updates and 3rd party solutions have pretty much kept it up with the rest of the market or ahead of it in available features and playback compatibility. Largely because it sold a fast general and graphics processor, on-board memory, and internet capabilities that are overkill for a blu-ray player (but not for a game console) at a loss since its launch in 2006. Add to that it's probably the most common blu-ray player in people's homes (so the support is always there) and it was the cheapest blu-ray player at launch and it even had SACD playback in early models, and it's not hard to see why people think it was and is a bang for your buck player. But as I said, new players are being released that finally match the full feature set of the ps3. And prices for stand alones have come down a lot since launch. So it's certainly not the no brainer buy it used to be for those that don't need multichannel analog outs.
Just some things that were updated via firmware:
Full compatibility to the latest Profile 2.0 (BD-Live).
24 fps movie cadence (and many other audio/video adjustment options)
DTS-HD MA decoding (already had TrueHD and ucompressed PCM capabilities)
DVD upscaling
Pretty much bulletproof compatibility with new blu-ray releases

I've never had a problem with my PS3. I have one of the original ones with all the options, I love it. Not to mention on top of everything else, it's a streaming media center. Unfortunately, with the state of BD, until they get their act together, then firmware updates are going to be a fact of life. Personally I haven't had a disc that didn't play. :)

IIRC, I don't think any of the latest updates are for blu-ray. The ps3 has very regular updates, but most of them deal with other features of the console like gaming. Most of the disk incompatibility issues have to do with poor BD-Java implementations on other players. The ps3 has a very robust BD-Java version and usually sails through issues with BD-Live, etc. on other players, including Sony's own stand alones...

I've never had a problem with my PS3, but I have high speed Internet service into my home that has been down about 2 minutes in the past 3 years so I probably didn't miss much :D.
It's a dynamic, brave new world guys. If you aren't connected 24/7, you are missing updates and things will just plain stop working properly.
The general public demands constant improvement. You absolutely can't fault Sony/Microsoft/Apple/Symantec/McAfee/etc. if your systems are offline.

Thanks for the more detailed info Cheddar, I guess I was reffering more to some of the issues with the other players out there. I know there's a few problems with some movies recently with some Panasonic player, I know Twilight won't play on some Panasonic players and they're waiting on firmware updates.

Yeah, BD-Java continues to be a problem both with players and with how the studios author all the goodies on their disks. (It also contributes to all those load times staring at the stupid load icons for ages.) The ps3 is unique in that it is more like a PC than an A/V component. So I'm guessing you can have a very full Java implementation on it. Other blu-ray players may not have the overhead, so they always seem to be playing catch up.
