City By The Sea - Quick Review

Although the son plays a convincing junkie, overall the performances are uninspiring - DeNiro has been much better in other flics. The picture quality is so-so, and the soundtrack is definitely not Dolby's best effort. The plot and story drags on for well over two hours to a predictable and sappy finish.

In short - probably not worth renting, and definitely not worth owning - a real snoozer. 5/10 is my rating.

I DID buy MBFGW as part of a Valentine's gift, and I'm sure I won't be disappointed - supposedly funny as hell.

I agree. This movie was pretty lame. Slow and uninspired. I don't buy very many movies and sure would not buy this one. DeNiro seemed like he was on valuim most of the time. SPOILER AHEAD:










It really put me over the edge when Gina showed up with the "little surprise." ****, he had no more reaction than if she walked in carrying a newspaper. Unreal. Of course by that time in the movie I was just barely hanging on.

I didn't like the fact that he got shot in the left shoulder with a high power sniper rifle (probably .308 caliber) and shrugs it off like nothing happened.

First off, from the angle of entry, the bullet would have passed through his shoulder and struck his son in the right upper lung. What happened to the bullet? Stuck in his shoulder? I don't think so brainchild - we're talking a 150 grain projectile traveling at 2700 fps and packing about 2500 ft-lb of energy.

Second, a .308 hit to the shoulder would have destroyed the scapula, rotator cuff, collar bone, and all connecting muscle and nerve tissue in between. The soft tissue damage would have been extreme and would have resulted in a complete loss of motor function in that arm and probably would have rendered him nearly incapable of anything remoting resembling normal speech and function due to immediate deep shock and extreme pain.

Beyond that, the bone fragments from the scapula would have probably dispersed throughout the thoracic cavity in a "billard break" fashion, with at least moderate potential for lacerating the left lung causing subsequent internal bleeding and possible lung deflation.

Then to add additional insult to my intelligence, in the very next scene, it's his RIGHT shoulder that's got the bullet wound and not the LEFT. Give me a break.

I think you would find me having a passing - but less than impressive - knowledge on most subjects. There are very few things I know a lot about. Firearms, hunting, and terminal ballistics are three of them.

I teach hunter safety for both firearms and bow, and I am required to have at least a moderate understanding of both human and animal anatomy. I have killed many small and large animals with both firearm (shotgun, slug, rifle, handgun) and arrow, and I always conduct a detailed post mortem autopsy to determine the cause of death - always.

The sportsman strives for a clean kill and the terminal ballistics and the physiological dynamics of a quick death are more complicated than they might initially appear at first blush.

The wife brought it home and it was a blast to watch. Should I say... aaaa what the hell... reminded me alot of my family growing up with 1 exception, were Italians. But damn that was sort of a blast from the past.
