I have one pair of original Large Advents and found a second garage sale for which I have refoamed the woofers.

Love the sound.

My current amp is an Onkyo 760 from the mid 80's at 80 wpc bnut it is slowly dying.

I an shopping for a new amp and am thinking about Parasound or Rotel. Something in the 250 wpc range.

Does Anybody have any advice on what might be better?

There seems to be a thread to other discussions that the Parasounds can sound a little bit bright. I am thinkg that might not be a bad thing with the Advents.

Help!

Welcome to Club Polk,

Nice snag on those Advents, a TRUE classic speaker. Both of those amps are very good. Personally I like the Parasounds a bit more...but only the 'higher' series! That means the Halo series in the newer models.

But you'd be happy with the Rotels too especially if you're thinking about a lower end Parasound. But that's just my opinion.

I'd wait for the others to respond and also get out there and listen to both amps if you can.....?

Welcome!

Audio Advisor has an open-box Parasound 2250 (250watts) for less than $800 bills. Good deal if you ask me.

I have owned a Parasound HCA-1500A for years, I never found it to be bright--at all.

I like Rotel, used to have a 990 amp that was very good for the money. But you could try NAD, they tend to be a little warmer sounding than Rotel.

I had Large Advents in college, my buddys kid has 'em now. He had to refoam the woofers too.

Adcom is, AFAIK, still in the game. Their GFA5500 is solid. I think it could hang with the Rotel and Parasound in terms of performance and value.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses on the Advent question.

I wrote an email to Parasound last Friday night and received a reply form the president of the company on Saturday night.

He said that in a prior life he was well aware of double stacked Advents. His suggestion was to consider the New Classic Series specifically the model 2100 preamp and the model 2125 amp (125 wpc). If the budget weas tight, he said that the model 275 at 75wpc could work.

He also said that the Halos might provide a little bit more at low volumes but otherwise the Advents would not pick up the additional detail of the Halos.

I thought that it was neat that the president of the company responded on Saturday and that he did not try to oversell me.

Having said that, if I chose to upgrade from the Advents, are there any suggestions out there? I wwould prefer a neutral sounding speaker.

BTW if they were Small Advents I believe those were 4 ohm speakers...stacking Small Advents will shut down many an amplifier. Even the 8 ohm Large Advents were not the easiest load to push...

I would spend some time with the Advents before venturing out on your audio journey. The large Advents are a very enjoyable speaker to listen to. I would identify the things you don't like about the Advents, and the things you love about the Advents, and then let that guide you to your next speaker choice.
