View Full Version : [Help Needed] Polk Stereo Setup Help

Hey guys. After searching all over the internet and finding not too much on this subject, I come for your help. I have two Polk Monitor 70's but I really need help on how to power these. I'm in college so I'm on a budget but I don't want my speakers to perform sub par. For now I can't afford a sub so I'm just looking at the best possible way to power my 70's, the cheapest. Do I need an amp and a receiver? Is their anything else I need? I am newbie to pro audio so your help would be much appreciated.

Is this for music, video or both?

BTW, this is home audio. The term pro audio is used for gear associated with live music.

If you are on a budget as most of us are, consider the Harmon Kardon HK 3490 stereo receiver. The Polk Monitor 70's love power and this receiver can provide it. HK has good build quality. It is available from JR or Onecall or Amazon at under $300 shipped. This receiver has two subwoofer outputs so you can add subwoofers later.

Thanks for the fast replies. That hk 3490 looks great. Yeah, so this is definitely going to be more for music. I don't want to limit myself to just that, but music is most important.

I second that H/K. I've heard it and Xcapri is right. I didn't realize how much power the M70s can actually take until I hooked them up to a 200 Watt/channel power amp. And man did they start to 'sing' and image like crazy. They sounded like a totally 'new' speaker...worth far more than I paid for them.

I think that H/K will server you well with those, it's quite musical and it's pretty cheap...from J&R.
