Blueray player recommendations to serve as CD player as well...

hello to all....was looking for a dedicated CD player....and remembered I wont be able to go too long without a blueray player....was wondering if anyone had some good recommnedations.

I saw on another thread someone mention a new Oppp BD player..but havent looked at it yet.

Yea budget is a concern but I dont want a frizzy lined low end model either its just not worth it.

I am using my PS3 with a PS AUdio which made an improvement for CDs over my Denon AVR DAC. I have a Rotel 1072 coming and will be able to tell you then what the differences are.

If you listen to SACD then buy a Sony

If you listen to DVD-A then buy a Panasonic

Keep in mind I'm trying to keep you in an affordable price range, there are more expensive players out there that will do more...better (more better, that sounded retarded but I think you guys know the context).

I will use my PS3 because I have alot of Blu-Ray's and I'm a gamer so it fits me but it will all depend on how and what you plan to use it for.

It has a dedicated 2-channel audio out (RCA analog) and Wolfson Audio DAC's. I have never heard it myself, but I would think it would make a great CD Player compared to it's competition.

Plus it is dirt cheap.:cool:

I take it either or will play old CD impressively or will they not be backwards compatible?

It is a great deal. :eek:Blueray and CD player. But their is a few issues about them
that may deter you. ( Layer changes and, the non-japan version that came out. Also the release of the long awaited on board decoding is now released) so just read up before you buy.

I wouldn't wait to long at that price they will sell them quickly.
If you can live with the issues It would be a good buy for the money.

The Pioneer BDP051 and it's Elite version, the BDP09FD are excellent CD players. Their Blu-Ray performance is very good. However, there are some issues with their usability. The Pioneers are slow responding, does not support DTS-HD Master (yet). Like nearly all Blu-Ray players, their SD DVD layer change is pretty slow (some DVDs takes 2-3 seconds). The remote control is not user friendly.

Still, their CD performance is very good... good enough where Stereophile made some good comments about it. I have both the BDP05 and BDP51 and the differences are mostly cosmetic, with the BDP51 having a bit poorer performance when used with component cables.

If you decide to get one, you have to act soon. Both models have been discontinued by Pioneer and their replacement units are cheaper with less features. The BDP51 was $600 but can be found for less than $300 now.

One model you might look into is their BDP09FD, which outperforms the BDP09/51, but it sells for $2000.

Yes - it is still pending for the 51FD.

You may want to check on the AVS board for the thread specific to the 51FD player for other quirks, tricks, and secret tips of that player.

For the money - seems like a good value.

I'm holding out for the Oppo...waiting to see how the player performs with the general public and if the price will drop - if at all. It has the features, performance, and speed that may make it worth the price...to me.

Pioneer has been promising an update for DTS-HD Master since the unit was released last summer. The models (BDP05FD and BDP51FD) are now been discontinued and yet no firmware update has been released. They also promised performance updates but that never materialized. Firmware version 1.27A is supposed to be released with DTS HD Master next month (it's been promised every month this year) so until it is released, i am not holding my breath.

Regarding the Oppo Blu-Ray player... I have seen reports which make it appear to be the fastest player on the market, even outperforming the Sony PS3 in some areas. But looking at the Oppo thread in AVS Forum shows that the Oppo does have some issues... even more than the Pioneer did when it was released, even though Oppo has been beta testing for several months. One does have to take into mind that the Oppo is supposed to be a jack of all trades player, supporting even SACD and DVD Audio, so it is understandable that there's going to be a lot of bugs for the feature set that it is promising.

IMHO, if you have a HDMI HDCP capable receiver, a Sony PS3 is still the best option. It's fast, updates regularly through the internet. It is the player with the fewest problems. The big pain is that the remote uses BlueTooth iso IR. The only remote that will work with it are the Harmonys with the newly available IR/Bluetooth PS3 adapter.

I have the same exact question about a good blu ray player that will serve as a CD player also. I am going to buy an SC -07 or -05 AVR. Do I need a higher end Blu Ray player or will the PS3 or maybe a Samsung player that is a little cheaper. I know the Elite has a good DAC, but does the player need to have one also?

This is the excerpt from the instructions that tells you how to determine the FW version.

A. Check the current firmware version of the player:
Using the player’s remote control.
1. Press the "STANDBY/ON" button to switch the unit on.
2. If the player starts to play a disc, press the "STOP" button and wait until the Pioneer logo is displayed on your TV.
3. Press the "Home Menu" button.
4. Select "Initial Setup" then press "Enter”.
5. Select "Video Out" then press "Enter".
6. Select "TV Aspect Ratio" then press "Enter".
7. Press the "Blue" button on the remote control.
8. The firmware version of your player will be displayed in the bottom right portion of the TV screen.
If the version number is 1.32 or higher, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
If the version number is less than 1.32, it is necessary to update the firmware. Please continue to Step B.

When you put the CD with the new FW in your player, leave it be until it is finished.
The drawer will open itself when it is done.
If you disturb it or have a power outage during the update which takes 15 to 20 minutes, then there may be problems.
There will likely be additonal FW upgrades. Pioneer continues to support this player.
There is an unauthorized FW version 1.33 available, but I would recommend staying with the authorized version to maintain warranty.

Just picked the Pioneer up Sunday from BB.It was returned open box but all parts were still sealed in plastic,only $124.00.Wired it in using analog cables to my mmc1.On cd's it sounds similar to my azur 640.The surround is outstanding.I updated it from 1.02 to 1.32 last night.

You lucky dog!!! I can't tell you how many times I went to my local Best Buy stores hoping to find an open box. Ended up buying one here at CP for $220 to my door and still think I got a good deal. Great unit for BR, DVD, or CD...although I usually use my HD-A1 to play standard DVD's.
