I have no sound on my 52" Sharp LCDTV. I have a picture but no sound. I have re-set the Direct TV Sattellite receiver several times like they tell me to but I think my HDMI cable is shot. It is the cable provided by Direct TV when they installed my HD receiver. Which tells me it was not very good quality to begin with. I hope someone can lead me in the right direction to fix this. I do have sound when playing movies on my dvd player. It is not hooked up through HDMI. This is how I came to my conclusion of a possible bad HDMI cable. Thank You.

Welcome to club Polk.

Hmmm.... How to test a HDMI cable? Do you have another HDMI source DVD player? Do you have another HDMI input on the tv?

Yeah, I have other ports and I tried them. Same result.

You should check your settings. The Audio over HDMI may not be enabled. It's got nothing to do with cable quality at this point, worry about functionality....baby steps.

The problem is, I had sound for a month and a half from when it was all installed new and today it went silent. So the Audio over HDMI should have been enabled for me to have had sound all this time until today right?!!

Doro's right,

When I first hooked up my HDMI DVD player the TV wouldn't output sound because I had not selected 2.0 digital on the HDTV's menu. Each TV is a bit different. You may also have to get into the HD-Boxes menus?

Check ALL your MANUALS...it's IN THERE!

Sure. What changed recently? Do you have a friend who uses the system?....like a wife? They usually like to press buttons.

Any power outages during that time that may have 'reset' things to default settings?

There was a quick like five second outage the other night. But everything seemed normal until today. I will get my manual and look it over and make sure there is nothing I missed. But I really think it is the cable. I am kind of stubborn that way. I really appreciate all of your help. Everything you folks mentioned will be dually noted for sure because I am an electrician not an electronics technician.

I will say that the cable Dtv gave me with my hd receiver was the worst cable I've seen ( I didn't even use it), but as long as you haven't kinked the connections, I doubt it went bad.

I'd bet electronics before the cable. I'm thinking something with the Dtv receiver. If you still think it's the hdmi cable, you can get one from Monoprice.com really cheap.

DirecTv boxes get firmware upgrades occasionally. Any chance your audio menu selections got reset ? Got a friend / family member / neighbor close by with an HDMI you could borrow for 10 minutes ?
