View Full Version : My SDA SRS 1.2 tl upgrade thread.

Figured i would start a thread as i start putting these together in the next few weeks. I will keep this updated as i go along. Ben is doing my x-over upgrade for me, as i will be doing everthing else. Really looking forward to hearing these 180lb beast's. I will be putting in the RDO 198's as well. I was also advised to use JB WELD on the drivers. I will be replacing the grill cloth.

As i posted in another thread i am remaking the x-over plates, "I think they look FANTASTIC with the red ink", and handles. The handles will be made out of 1/2 x 1/2 brass square bar, and i am also making the spikes out of 1" brass round bar.

Just thought i would share my excitment.

Thanks,

Larry.

I could make them and sell them but The last thing i want is a law suit from Polk Audio for selling their name. If they gave me the OK to make them for Polk Club members, Then i might do that.

Looks Great!!!

I don't think you'd have anything to worry about, It's not like your making t-shirts. How many would you really sell, 2 dozen pairs, they'd all go to people on this forum anywayz

"True" 2 people already hit me up for them, and i would be ok with it ,then the thought of selling the name of Polk Audio hit me and i wondered if i would get in trouble for it.

While the drivers are out double check the hot glue integrity on the cross members. A few months ago I noticed rattling in the cabinet of the right channel in mine and when I checked inside one was loose so I had to hot glue it back in place.

I checked everything, everything looked good, I only got to the right channel today, the only thing i did find was one of the gaskets on one tweeter was folded over. it was not sealed 100%. I terminated the wires i needed too to accomidate the RDO 198's, and used mortite to seal the drivers, and the tweeters. I also cleaned the drivers, it is amazing the dirt / smoke that comes off of them. I really like the look of the RDO's over the SL's.

1/4" Why are you going with the 198's? I have heard of people doing this but i always wondered if its good with the crossovers. I just put in 194's in my 2B's.

Face

FBM is going with the TL upgrade on his 2B's. It consists of adding a 5.8uf cap in parallel with the 2.7ohm(?) resistor in the HF circuit.

fbm211

I have the 5.8 sonicaps already to mod the xovers.Ive been told all I have to do is bypass the the resistors with them and I can use the 198s which will make my SDA2Bs SDA2BTL...The 198s are supposed to be an upgrade over the 194s.
I also had ben rebuild my xovers a few weeks ago.He did a great job.I am a little concerned about having a sonicap and a dayton in the high pass but maybe it will sound OK.If not I can always replace the 12uf daytons with sonicaps.
Edit---Face said it better

Nice!! I did not know you could do a tl upgrade on the 2B's. I may have to do that in the future with mine. But this time i want to do the crossovers myself, there is only one way to get your feet wet and thats to get in there and try it.

When i talked to polk about using the 198's in my 2B's for a tl upgrade i was told there is no tl upgrade for the 2B's. I should have just came back here before getting the 194's.

Larry,

It looks like you are missing the counter weights from your Passive Raditors.

See below at my original ones, I replaced my original ones with a never used pair that I bought from another polkie after one of my cat's tore a hole in the butyl rubber surround.

But the original ones and the new ones all had this metal counter weight on them.

Sal

zarrdoss

ben62670

Damn... how do you know where to put what or what to attach where?

There were some mods that needed to be made to convert the 1.2's to 1.2TL's. Polk engineering helped a bit, and the 1.2's, and 1.2TL's use the same board. I will post the mods necessary later. When all is said and done It is cheaper to convert to the 1.2TL's. I will post a thread later on the mod process. I was hoping that a measured amount of wire could be removed to decrease the inductance on the low pass arrays, but after doing two 1.2 to 1.2TL conversions an inductance meter should really be used. Please hold mod question till I write up the mod thread. I don't want to muck up TFL thread, and it would be helpful if any questions were in the mod thread.
Thanks
Ben

Sal

These had no counter weights.

They certainly look nothing like the stock 1.2's. They do however look just like modded 1.2TL's;)

Don't worry. If you don't have an SPL meter get one. I will walk you through room tunning passive woofers.

Well my son is here from NY, and i had him help me put the spikes on them.

Guess what? They sound F@$KING AWESOME!!!!

For you guys out there that are not sure about putting spikes on them, DO IT!!!!

My guess is the concrete in the basement gave me the sound i had, but with the spikes?

It was night and day on how they sound, The spikes helped bring everything out in a big way. Not only are the lows more detailed but the highs as well.

Looks great Larry!

So what is it that the spikes do to improve the sound? Decouple the box from the floor so as to eliminate internal reverberations? I can't think of anything else, myself. Especially since it looks like that series was designed to sit on the floor.

It also makes sense that basement concrete would deaden, absorb any internal SWs. I'm going to be setting mine up in a basement so I'm assuming I'm OK?

The 1.2/tl's , 2.3/tl's came with leveling feet, I am sure the 3.1's, and 1C's did as well.

I am sure the spikes did eliminate internal reverberations, It was Night and day in sound though.

I can not stress this enough, If i was you I would spike them, Listen to them for awhile then put spikes on them, and see for your self at the improvment.

It is a big change, One tweek i would fully recommend for everyone that has not tried it.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Well with my 1C's done I have already started to take these 1.2tl's apart again for one last time. I have pulled the side panels off and pulled the old grill cloth off and the strip of wood. Pulling them off was not as bad as I thought it might be. Thanks to DK's thread on the process.

I am going to complete them as I did the 1C's. I ordered the oak wood for the wood caps and side strip's, should have it next week, I also ordered some BlackHole for the back walls, and some Sonic Barrier for the side walls, I am also replacing the binding post with cardas. I am replacing the SDA interconnect socket with bindding post as well like I did on the 1C's

My plan is to have the wood match the 1C's. The nice thing is half the upgrades have been done.. I would just remove the top binding posts like DK did but part of me still wants to try and byamp them some day.

Refurbing these speakers is a blast.

Awesome Larry! But be careful about replacing the SDA interconnect socket. I was going to do that but was warned that in doing so, if I ever purchased a non-common ground amp, I wouldn't be able to use the AI-1 cables if I did replace the socket with posts. Lo and behold I got a non-common ground amp and used the AI-1 cable with Raife's baked potato tweek.

Then there is of course, if you ever decide to buy a non-common ground amp, you can make Raife's dreadknot and use the posts.

Toolfan66
05-22-2010, 01:14 AM
Well I will be taking the pin/blade socket out and instaling a binding post. Now if I was to use a non common ground amp with an AI-1, the binding post should not matter. I'm sure DK has his set up that way.

Edit: I see you posted about using the dreadknot. We are on the same page, I have no desire in using the AI-1 anyway. I want to build a Dreadknot if I ever use a amp I can't tie the negs together.

Well then have at the Cardas posts Larry! I replaced my stock binding posts with the Cardas posts and am very happy with them. One word of advice though. You need to cut the holes in the back plate for the Cardas posts in a somewhat oval shape because the plastic seats that hold the posts in place will just spin in a round hole. Jesse did mine and started with a small hole the used very fine, very small files to rasp the holes to the proper shape.

Another tip here is that my Cardas posts didn't come with color coding on them. Jesse placed a red pinstripe on the positives and a black pinstripe the negatives. I don't know if Cardas has started color coding their posts so if they didn't the above works just fine.

You are going to love those posts.

When I had my Dreadnaught and modded binding posts,, the blade (-) cable connects to the negative binding posts and the pin cable from the dreadnaught connects to the now upgraded pin/binding post.Worked like a charm. One important tidbit that I discovered was to use a good quality/guage cable such as in DK's original post.Good luck with your upgrade,,I wonder how many sheets of the blackhole it's gonna' take.:)

Well the oak wood I got for the sides is 3.500 wide, the original was 3.125
The thickness I got was .750 so I had them plane it down to .500 as that is the thickness of the original.

With the new sides being .375 wider then the original I took the router and opened the slot to accommodate the wider oak side.

In this pic you can see the difference.

He used way too much dampening material inside SDA's which can get you banned. I don't think that's too harsh!

Me too! Those mounting rings he made for the drivers and PRs is an awesome idea. My PRs screw holes are all stripped out and the MW screw mounts are pushed towards the inside. Those rings would sure be a God send plus they make the Mortite fit tighter.

Well You guys have seen my rings in the other thread I am using for the drivers and passives.

Larry, those rings are pure genious. I want a set if you decide to start selling them!

So here are a couple more. as you can see I have put in the BlackHole and Sonic Barrier on the walls. I have also added some extra cross bracing to the side walls. I used 1 3/4 round Oak dowels, I put 3 in each cabnet.

I have some concern about the extra sound coating and bracing because they may actually work against the acoustic properties of the cabinet. Did you discuss any of this with Polk's engineering department?

I say this because the SDA 1.2 and SDA 1.2TL cabinets were redesigned to drastically reduce resonance though the use of a "monocoque" structure wherein the rigidity is derived from the external casing rather than internal bracing. [Reference: Monocoque-Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monocoque)]

Adding internal bracing or adding bracing in a less than ideal location might actually reduce the resonance reduction properties of the monocoque cabinet sturcture.

It appears that the thick, soft sound coating materials (Black Hole and Sonic Barrier), which are much denser than polyfil, are changing the interior dimensions of the cabinet and providing a large absorptive surface for air. Therefore, rather than air pressure being channeled through smooth, hard interior walls and efficiently transferred to the "fluid coupled" passive radiator, some of that air pressure is now going to be transferred to the thick padding. I would think the result of this would be diminished bass impact and speed.

The textured surface of the sound coatings may also induce more air turbulence inside the cabinet, which would affect the response of the drivers and the passive radiator.

Sonic Barrier really doesn't displace much. To get an idea of how much air it displaces, if you step on it, most of it's depth disappears.

Sonic Barrier and Black Hole don't do much for cabinet resonance as they do for standing waves. Poly fill is only good for high frequencies. SB and BH are much more effective for mid and low frequencies, preventing them from reflecting off the back wall and through the cone again(distortion). In turn, you should experience more coherency, better defined images and possibly a larger soundstage.

I am pretty sure that is why in the end you have to listen to things, not sure, but pretty sure, that you have to listen to be sure that is.

we know that fluid always seeks the path of least resistance

"OK" I finished them about an hour ago. I talked with Jesse today about his concerns with the Sonic Barrier and BlackHole. and in turn had me second guessing my decision in going about it, all though I know what the 1C's have been sounding like.

My thinking is you won't really know till you try it "RIGHT?" and that is part of the hobby as well.

Well I just played a few songs a variety of sorts, and right know I have the biggest smile on my face as these bad boys "FREAKING ROCK" they are absolutly increadable.
