Klipsch Sub-12 vs. older Velodyne HGS-12...opinions needed.

So I have a Klipsch Sub-12 that I've been running for the last couple of years in my HT. Sounds great. I was looking at an older Velodyne HGS-12 on Craigslist (local) for $750. The guy had a circuit board replaced on it and claims that it's in perfect shape...no scratches or flaws to speak of. I'm not sure if it's a Series II. Anyway, this sub sounds pretty high end, but it's years old.

1. Would you say the price is fair?
2. Would an older sub like that sound better than what I currently have?

Overall output will be similar, but the Velo will be much tighter, more linear and sound much better. That said, it is getting up there and likely to have some problems down the road. $750 is a reasonable price from the sellers perspective. I don't think I'd got that high. For $750, I'd probably put my money toward an Epik Vanquish and get the full warranty.

+1 on what Ron Temple said. You can buy a really nice new sub for $750.

I am not familiar with the Velodyne sub in question, but I do know Velodyne makes a good product. Still though, $750 is a lot to pay for a used sub.

I also own a Klipsch Sub-12. Personally I feel this is good home theater sub, but it is severely lacking for music. I have two DSW Pro 600s in my main system, and compared to the Sub-12, the DSWs are much tighter, more detailed, and accurate. They don't dig quite as low as the Klipsch for home theater, but they are close. To me they are a much better all around sub than the Sub-12. I would strongly look at those (or any of the other DSW Pro or Micro Pro subs) and look at some of the other good quality subs out there from Hsu, SVS, Epik, Paradigm, Velodyne, etc. You have a lot of quality options for $750.

Agreed, Look at some new subs from SVS and EPIK.

Don't get me wrong the HGS is a heck of a sub. It was replaced by the DD series and there's not much difference in SQ. It's probably at least 6-7 years old though and when something goes (usually the amp), replacement and/or repair, can be time consuming and costly.
