Was watching the movie The Untouchables and the music in the scene where Sean Connery dies (Vesti La Giubba), got me thinking of this topic. Here are a few that give me the chills no matter how many times I listen to them. What songs give you the chills?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ONUCPKdGcrk&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ONUCPKdGcrk&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Probably my favorite performace of this ever. He holds the end forever it seems.

"Olympic Fanfare" by Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops. No video or you-tube unfortunately. On an accurate system, the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up. Then come the goose bumps. I have the Telarc version FYI.

Pink Floyd-Comfortably Numb

The guitar solo makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up...simply one of the greatest pieces ever played on guitar IMO.

Also, the Grateful Dead's show on 7-20-94 in Deer Creek, Indiana. An incredibly show, and towards the end of Jerry's life...almost the entire second set sends chills down my spine.

Thanks for all the input so far. Really cool to find out some old/new tunes that you all enjoy. Today was the last day of school for my children. One is going to be in high school next year and the other in 8th grade. Seems like just yesterday they were born. Where does the time go?????????? This song makes the hair on my arms stand up.

In my ears, this entire album is amazingly recorded and produced. The part that always sends the chill to me is about a minute into this track when it calms down and Anthony Greene (The Skunk) starts singing. Goosebumps. His voice and the clarity of the recording is just unreal.

These vids are great. I was about to get off the computer but now I am hooked on watching and looking for more, lol. The Ray Charles vid was great, thanks. In keeping with patriotic music here is one I really like. Could not find it anywhere so I uploaded it to my account to make things easier. Takes a few to buffer. She is singing it in the same church as when she did the Amazing Grace video I posted earlier. Talk about everything sounding just right.......at the end when she sings 'free' I get chills.

Gets me every time.

Listen to the lyrics. If it doesn't choke you up even a teensy bit, you're not human.

Lyrics for those who don't wanna listen:

I read a note my Grandma wrote back in 1923
Grandpa kept it in his coat and he showed it once to me
He said "Boy, you might not understand but a long long time ago
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none but I loved your Grandma so

We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet instead
I found this letter and this is what it said"

Chorus:

If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down
Darlin' wait and see
And between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you
Love, Me

I read those words just hours before my Grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church where me and Grandpa stopped to pray
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
But as he said these words to her his eyes filled up with tears

If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I don't know how long I'll be
But I'm not gonna let you down
Darlin' wait and see
And between now and then till I see you aga
And between now and then till I see you again

I like music that is well recorded. For example:
Phil Collins "In the air tonight"
Keb Mo basically anything, but especially "The Door", "More Than One Way Home", "Riley B King".
Prince basically anything- he knows how to record
Ray Charles basically anything
Marc Cohn "Walking In Memphis" and "Paper Walls"

Hey, I just love music! DJ

Okay, for real. Are you guys a bunch of foreigners or what?

Richard Rodgers "Victory at Sea". The opening bars of the opening piece,The Song of the High Seas are stirring. But the very last piece in the score "Victory at Sea" is 6:10 of tribute to our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, great-uncles (you get the picture) for undertaking and emerging victorious from the greatest human endeavor in history. I get the impression it was written for not just Americans, but for Allied sailors, marines and soldiers alike. In the episodes aired on tv, parts of the song accompanied the visuals of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen of all nations, parading down their respective "5th Avenues" as it were.

I always envision the guys coming home on the troop ships, and as they get close enough realize that entire buildings have giant Welcome Home, or Well Done banners down the side, or painted on the side. A big one hanging off the Golden Gate bridge. A damn shame, but it was the last time this country all got together and became one. Nothing on the planet had a chance once that happened.

It is (suitably) performed by the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra, and it was recorded in stereo back in the days when RCA Victor was a US company, and actually employed a symphony orchestra. There are copies by Kunzel & The Pops, but the original punches my ticket like nothing else. It is a glorious recording as well, the opening bars more than justifying your purchase of SDA, and rocking the walls with deep bass and NO DRUMS!

I was perusing YouTube and thought of a couple more.

Everyone knows of Van Halen and for alot of people from my generation, our first experience with VH was on MTV. Well, I will never forget the first time I saw this video on MTV way back in like '86 I think it was. It had alot to do with why I got in to defense work. Even today, when ever I hear this song, I get goosebumps and if I'm driving, the right foot gets real heavy, real quick! You just can't watch this video or listen to this track without getting all fired up! Follow your "Dreams" 'cause they'll take you higher and higher, straight up you'll climb!

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vGcxN2D1E34&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vGcxN2D1E34&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The other one I remember seeing and was surprised to see it on YouTube was when Pope Benedict came to the U.S. last year and President Bush had the distinguished guest to the Capitol. I watched it on the news from my computer. The YouTube video sound is not so hot but "The Battle Hymn of the Republic when sung by a chorus or chior like this gives me chills. I don't know why, it just does. Here's the U.S. Army Chorus doing a spectacular rendition. Just wish I could find one with better sound quality.

I heard another love story song the other day and saw it's video at the same time. I can't remember the name of the song but it's by two guys,Rascal flats I think. A woman is racing home (coming home?maybe the name...)and she falls to her knees in front of a head stone. The father and son look like they're in the distance ready to leave earth... It gets me just typing about it...

Yes, that's a beautiful and haunting song; also one of my "references" for system evaluation. Just listened to it in the LR after church; thanks for mentioning it!

I'll put in another vote for Eva Cassidy's version of Fields of Gold. I don't know if it would be so moving if I didn't know her tragic story... but it still makes me mist up when I hear it. It's an intrinsically beautiful song; one of Gordon's best.

I find it hard to watch YouTube videos of Eva :-(

EDIT: Joan of Arc's intro brought me to mind of Elton John's Rotten Peaches, and thence Leavon; two more haunting and beautiful songs (just in case any of the younger folks here think Sir Elton never did anything but goofy pop and Candle in the Wind).

OK, listening to Joan all the way through reminded me of a triumvirate of remarkable "confessional" songs on Pete Townshend's unique (you'll either love it or hate it!) solo album, All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.

A contemporary critic, as I recall, described the latter song as the most beautiful suicide note ever written. I never had that impression of it at all; more like the a true admission of contrition.

EDIT: I think some of you might recognize the other guitarist in the Slit Skirts video...
