Newbie Please Help

I just replaced a 400W JBL amp with a PA400.1. I have a Kenwood DDX512 head and had no problem. I also have an Infinity 350W\1000W sub.

I'm not sure what the setting on the new amp should be. Every time I turn the volume up just a little (say up to 15 or 16 out of 30) the amp shuts down and I have to turn down the head and wait for it to start again.

I have tried turning the gain all the way down (but then it doesn't do what I bought it for). I have set the phase both ways, I have set the LPF all through the settings range with no luck.

Does anyone have an idea where I should start?

are the speakers to low of an ohms load?

How do I find out what the ohms are? It's not on the speaker.

Let me ask you this, would it be different if I hook two up? There are two speaker hook ups on the back of the amp with a different way of hooking them to the amp.

I have two speakers but for space I only have one hooked up.

you can research it on line or use a multi-tester. what is the min ohms rating on your amp? not to many speakers are below 4 ohms

BTW: I just want you to know this is in my truck. With all the different amps and receivers out there I just wanted to be clear. :)

Kenwood DDX 512 in-dash DVD player
Polk AP 400.1 monoblock amp
Infinity 350W\1000W 10" sub-woofer (Only one hooked up but have two, could hook up both if I need to get the ohms different)

I really want this to work. I plan to replace the the fronts and add a 2 channel amp for them......

I'm new at this so some of the stuff I ask or tell you may seem stupid, please overlook....LOL

It seems to me you are overloading it somehow and the protection is kicking in or maybe lack of power if your voltage drops below 11 most amps will shut off, when was the last time you checked your battery?

What gauge wire are you using? Is your ground connected to a bare piece of metal? How long is your ground wire? All of these could lead to your amp cutting out.

All the wiring was done professionally. All the wires are very large.

When I say the amp shuts off, I mean that the power stays on, the green light turns red and I get no sound, a few seconds later, the light turns green and sound comes back.....Not the 'POWER LIGHT' another light that comes on when the remote switch is activated.....

All I did was unwire the old amp and replace it with a new one. I think it is the settings I have selected.

i am about to go to the place that installed the old amp and let them check it out. I will post what was wrong for future reference for other folks....

Well, I went back to the place that installed the old amp and had them take a look. How about it, I had everything right, the amp was bad. You don't normally think that a brand new amp out of the box would be bad, but it was. They replaced it with a new one and now I am rocking!!

Now I am going to tackle adding another amp for the front and replace the front speakers. I just bought a pair of Kicker's and will get the back door speakers next week. I guess that another Polk amp for the front would be OK huh?
