Diana Krall Live at the Borgata

Hello all ,
I went to see Diana last night in Alantic City , NJ. The Borgata hotel has a very nice concert room. The sound quality was much better then I expected but I did expect it to sound good.

What was very nice about the concert is the fact when she spoke or sang , no one in the hall talked. It was dead silent . No kids ,No smoking , comfortable seats and good music. Even the volume level was perfect. My ears don't ring at all.

I'm used to going to Rock concerts where you leave with your ears ringing , your clothes smell like smoke or weed and thousands of kids screaming and yelling. When I closed my eyes , I felt like I was all alone in the hall and Diana was singing for me. That was very cool.

The Dynamic range was amazing. They played soft then loud and the difference was emotional. If that was the goal then the goal was reached. She whispered when singing and then belted out a few notes. You heard every breath , every key stroke of the piano. The Drummer used his hands a few times and you could tell how hard or soft he played.

What I really liked was you could even hear the other Musicians breath or talk on stage. When the Bass player got down, he was way into what he was playing, he was saying "ha uh" and "yeah man". You heard him which added to the live experience.

I gotta go see more concerts like this. I grew up loving rock music but always liked Jazz and softer music. My dad was a Neil Young fan and my Mom listened to Barbra Streisand. I would love to see both of them live. Diana Krall is a amazing performer and married to Elvis Costello which I didn't know. They have kids together. They just had Twins awhile back. She also just played at the White House.

You where not allowed to take pic's but I had my Iphone on me and snapped a few. The lighting and my seating didn't work out well at all but what the hell.
We had awesome seats in the 400 section which was just right of center stage. Where where about 6 rows back from the front.

Yes it was. The only thing I didn't care for was the Plastic cups of Beer for 7 bucks. Ouch!! You only got 2 choices 2 with Bud light and Yuengling.

I would like to see her at Ceasers Palace in Vegas, That place is incredible.
Took my wife to see Celine Dion a few years ago. It's the best place i have ever seen a show. Diana Krall would bring the house down playing there.

When i lived in Vegas (a short time in late 2000 -early 2001), I ventured into a high-end audio store. It was in a terrible location (near a train station). Anyway, I brought a few cd's and we listened to them and quickly realized I left all of my acoustic jazz at home. My salesman asked me if I liked Diana which I said of course, who doesn't. He puts in a CD and we listen to a track and he starts to fidget. I ask him if he OK and he says he is but he is a little uncomfortable listening to himself on recordings. Turned out he was the bass player for the recording session! We talked for hours and it brought my wife at the time into the conversation because she is a singer herself and LOVES Diana. I too want to hear her live.

Maybe it's just me, but of the DK discs I have heard it sounds like she is singing through electronics. Like some mild reverb thing added to smooth out her voice. Kind of like Enya, only not to that extent.

Kind of ruins DK for me.

Now when you listen to some of the better Billie Holiday recording - all you here is her voice. No magical reverb box, etc.

It kind of sucks, but once you know what it sounds like when someone is singing through a reverb box it can really ruin it.

She speaks like she sings. Her voice is soft and smooth.

Dan, I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed the show. She is a pure class act! They must have made hugh improvements in the room from last year though. I took my wife to see her last year & the sound quality was absolutely horrible. The air conditioner was making all kinds of noise (Diane even joked about it during the show) & the acoustics just weren't up to par for that nice of a place. Now that you said that room sounded great, I'll have to put the Borgata back on my list again.

I sat 6 rows back from the stage. I got to hear everything clear. I didn't hear any Air Conditioner running anywhere. The room was dead silent when she played. You could hear a pin drop. What was really nice was the older crowd. No kids and no talking. It was so nice man. I would see any concert there.

While I agree about the venue, I think DK will sound better in a more intimate setting.
