My set up is VM30 from pair, VM 20 center and surround and Tsi200 back surround, sub is PSW110
and the a/v receiver I am using is Yamaha Z7

It is a nice set up for movie until....

I tried to play Beethoven Symphony No. 9 (I have tried to used both PC and DVD player to play it) And tired to use optical or coax but there no layer at all, all the sound came out like one whole... you know what I mean... I tried a lots of different settings but nothing help.... Any thing else I can do or I used the wrong setting. Of course I only used two channel when I play music.
But I went to my friend's home to play the same song. it was totally different experience. His rig got layers, good mid voice, (by the way I can't even here the cymbal sound in my rig at all.)

Any one had the same experience that can help me out? Or this is it?

Thanks

I'm not following what you're saying above. Did you run the YPAO calibration on the Yamaha?

The Z7 is a very complex receiver....and I am not that familiar with it, but I can imagine that you can make any number of mistakes setting it up? You really need to stick with the manual on this kind of thing! Perhaps someone who knows Yammies better than I can jump in here???

How are your speakers placed and positioned?

here is the layout of the speakers position. But like I said when I play music I used 2 channels only, so only VM30 and the sub PSW110 will work only (casue I connect the front speakers to sub then to receiver.

Yes I did run the YPAO on the Yamaha, and I didn't touch any setting other than that. By earlier I said changing setting I mean jsut like swapping from "stereo 2 channel" to some other mode like "doby music" or "CSII music" etc

and by I am saying layering is symphony No 9 or any other symphony,

on suppose can feel where the each location of instrument are and where does the person sing. etc
but in my case I can't only heard everything goes together you can't feel who is behind who.

On the other hand my friend's place's 2 channel rig can totally tell the different.

Press "2 ch Stereo" on the remote and see it makes any difference!

Good soundstage, imaging, and instrument separation are not necessarily easy things to achieve for 2-channel, and these things are some of the reasons many people spend a lot of money on their audio equipment.

When I've had to listen to my LSi15's in 2-channel on my AVR, it always sounded a bit flat and lifeless to me. When hooked up to a nice 2-channel pre and a good amp, my system really comes alive.

You may have something wrong with your setup & configuration, could benefit from some different speaker placements, or might need to treat your room a bit. Or you might not have the gear necessary to get the results you're trying to achieve. Good luck with everything, hopefully you'll be able to get it figured out.

Thank you,

my friend told me what kind of speaker he got for his 2 channel rig, which is called Tannoy RHR speaker with the ST200 for tweeter and after he told me the price I totally understand why mine setup is not as "life up" as his does. Forgot about what he mention about his pre amp and power amp. But seem like at this point does not matter anymore.

However, I just hope I can at least try to max out the performance with mine.:D

how does it all sound in one of the multy chanel modes. try 7 chanel surround or 7channel enhanced, or even PLII music. can you hear the cymbals in multi channel? It sounds like a speaker wire connection problem or you have blown the tweeters in your VM30's somehow

But like I said when I play music I used 2 channels only, so only VM30 and the sub PSW110 will work only (casue I connect the front speakers to sub then to receiver.Disconnect your fronts from the subwoofer and connect them as front on your Yammy and then test again. Your present set-up may be OK for HT but somewhat miserable for 2 channels listening.

Cheers!

I have no real comment on teh VM's or the settings, although I have always been curious about those seldom talked about speakers.

How about that Beethoven's 9th symphony though! What orchestra/soloists/choir? What movement. Each movement in that symphony is perfect, and you've inspired me to get it out and play it tonight! I was fortunate enough to sing it twice in my life, both life changing experiences!

I hope you get your problems worked out. It almost sounds like it's not playing in true 2 channel mode, but rather just muting the others and keeping the front two playing. Again, I have no knowledge of the speakers or the setup, so good luck.

I think, other than a setup problem, you may be expecting a bit too much from those speakers/sub.

That AVR is a top of the line AVR, but those speakers seem like a mis-match to me.

You might want to look into some better speakers.

but for the price you pay for VMs ,at least at msrp, you'd hope that they sound pretty good.. I'm +1 on connecting the VM30s to the AVR and just use the subwoofer preout for the sub and see how it sounds.

hehe and I just noticed this is an older thread.. so any advice may be too late but I wouldn't mind seeing an update.
