My receiver has a setting that says " sub ext input level" and the options are 0db 5db 10db or 15db
Does anyone have info on that setting?

That might be the boost level you can put on your sub. Not knowing what AVR you have makes it hard to figure this out but that is my guess.

If I'm not mistaken some surround soundtracks have their bass boosted by 10db or so. This setting helps address that problem.

My Denon has the same option. It is for the 5.1 ch input (l,r,c,sr,sl,sub) so you can calibrate the the sub to match the rest of your speaker volume if your source does not have adequate adjustment.

All digital soundtracks have their LFE channel boosted by 10dB during decoding by design. This is not a problem; it's meant to be that way to give low frequency effects extended headroom.

The adjustment in question here is there because 1) many early DVD players with analog outs didn't have the proper levels for the LFE channel (or didn't do the 10dB boost during decoding per Dolby's specs), and 2) some DVD-Audio discs were encoded with the LFE channel 10dB too low. If you're not using the analog 5.1 inputs on your receiver, this setting should do nothing.

If you're running an hdmi/optical/coxial digital output to your reciever/pre amp from your dvd/blu ray player keep it at 0, thats what I'm doing with my AVR 1604/684 denon

As those above have mentioned, unless your using analogs out from a player into the analog ins on your AVR you DON'T have to do ANYTHING with that menu!

cnhMost players do no bass management over analog. If you output from your player via analog your receiver is allowing a 10 or 15db boost to the sub channel. It's quite a nice feature. I have to boost my channel trim on the receiver by +10dbs manually in setup. As said, if you're using HDMI or optical/coax nothing is being applied and that feature can be ignored.
