New 1.2TLs, Some questions....

Hi All;

I just purchased some SRS 1.2TL's locally. I have dreamed about owning a pair ever since I first saw a pair as a young lad growing up. Never thought I would until some popped up locally on Kijiji! After a few days of research I went down and gave them a listen and made the guy an offer. A few (3) of the mid woofers are making the "crackling" at higher volumes which I have read can be fixed by soldering the lead wires.

Another question I have is I am noticing the tweeters are all sounding different down the array of each speaker. Some are brighter than others. It seems to be the same down both speakers (eg - the third tweeter down on both speakers seems to be the brightest on both). Is this part and parcel in making the "SDA" come alive or are some of these tweeters more worn than the others?

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know where you read that, but it's false. More than likely, the popping drivers are toast.

Your tweeters are functioning as they should. It's called a point source.

the Tweeter situation is normal and would not concern me. I have never heard that soldering the leads on the mid woofers solves the popping sound. Most likely they are going bad and need to be replaced. What kind of power are you throwing at the speakers. These things crave as much as you can throw at them, and if under-powered, will also result in the popping you describe...

Congrats on the speakers. I was looking at th epair you got but could noy justify the drive to Canada to get them and found a pair a bit closer to home, though not by much.

Next time you might want to audition them first so you'll know what's wrong before you buy them and maybe the seller would've took something off the price for the bad mids.

I think I read somewhere on here (possibly somewhere else) that the leads going into the mid woofer rivets could possibly be soldered (carefully) to take care of this problem. At lower volumes they sound fine. I have done this with other speakers with the same result. I just aduitioned them and brought them home. The gent I bought them off of had them hooked up to a very vintage Marantz (he claimed) 200 Watt RMS amp. He wasn't sure whether it was common ground or not. They sounded fine until he turned it up a notch then 3 of the MWs started crackling.

I will be powering them with a (recently checked and cleaned) Yamaha P-2200 (240 RMS/CH) amp. I know it's nothing like what I SHOULD be throwing at these but I have no cash to be dropping on an amp right now. I am a small time music producer and will be using these for mastering my productions.

I did, and he did. Even if the three MW6503s have to be replaced they were a steal. The cabinets, grilles and the rest are in MINT condition. These were well cared for.

I would invest in an amp if you intend on using these as reference speakers. If you don't you will be missing out on a big portion of what they are capable of. You can find a decent amp for less than 500 bucks that will make these 200 pound monoliths dance like Beyonce;)...

I will heed your advice. An amp will be easier to sneak in than these giants. I almost lost some male anatomy over these, but after much explaining, begging and bargaining she finally caved.

If you have any suggesstions I will keep them under advisement. Keep in mind I will be connecting this amp to mostly balanced sources (XLR and TRS 1/4") but most amps that have that can still handle unbalanced as well.

Ah, you're talking about those. I understood you to mean the wires coming from the crossover to the driver. I remember reading about someone soldering those, but I believe their problem was distortion, not popping sounds.

Tested them this morning with my Yamaha P-2200 (I know, I know), pumped at least 75 clean (by the meters anyway) into each of them and listened carefully to each midwoofer. They are perfect. Must have been buddies amp clipping like hell.

Some more questions:

I was going to pull each driver and tighten each connection inside. While I have them out I was going to measure each driver (in ohms). What should each MW6503, MW6511 and SL2000T(<-correct me if I am wrong on the tweeter) measure? Also, what should each TL1.2 measure:

1. on it's own, without the interconnect cable and the Bi-Amp jumpers installed.
2. on it's own, with the interconnect cable and the Bi-Amp jumpers installed.
3. across the tweeter array connection at the back, without the interconnect or Bi-Amp jumper installed.
4. across the tweeter array connection at the back, with the interconnect, no Bi-Amp jumper installed.
3. across the MW array connection at the back, without the interconnect or Bi-Amp jumper installed.
4. across the MW array connection at the back, with the interconnect, no Bi-Amp jumper installed.
