When you don't have anyone to bother around, and you really give it the juice on a good recording, . . . close your eyes. . . lean back, Can you touch it?
Can you feel it on you skin, does it breath in front of you and around you, does it move, is it real? This is the payoff for me. This is the goal. The rest is shit.

Thanks for the indulging my a somewhat emotional run-on sentence.:o Only someone so afflicted, can relate I suppose.
For me, that is what this whole thing is about at times, transmitting the emotion. A decent setup can move you like a live performance would. It can fool you. If I can have that in my own house from time to time, then I feel pretty fortunate. There are better rigs, there always will be, but so what?. The point is that there is no 'rig' for that period of time. I'm in the hall, or 10 rows center, and life is good. There's never a bad seat, and it's only rained once ;)

While I like(from time to time) the experience of being there,,the genre' has changed for me, so instead of Deep Purple,,it's now Millage Gilbert,,the emotional transferrence from artist to consumer/spectator is what is important for me,as well as hanging on to the "plucks of a guitar string,as the note gently fades away,if it takes me out of my room to someplace, where I can smell the sound,,then I have accomplished what I set out to do.YMMV.

Good point George, I happened to have a live album on. I was transported back in time a bit. It's nice to revisit the rockers, but for me it's become the exception. My preferences have changed markedly since I've revisited this hobby.
If I get your post correctly, you are saying that a carefully arranged and recorded studio piece can be spectacular. I agree, and that is usually my choice as well. Live recording while using the signals for sound reinforcement is very difficult, so quite a few live albums are suck. :D By 'live', I was trying to convey what you put better with your post. I don't think it's too important whether it's recorded live, or that it sounds like it's being played all together. It's that it is more accessible, coherent, and very there. It has texture, drive and energy. The staging of venue and perspective is only important as part of the communication. The same tune can have close mic'd vocals or be sung a Capella in a cathedral. . .the song is the same, the message changes. One is close and intimate, maybe conspiratorial, the other ethereal, haunting, or lamented. If there is no art in the music, there is no soul.

A quick thought on an un-nerving track that made feel the emotion. O Death on the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. If I read this thread correctly, it conveys the same feeling like yours. Chills up the spine.

Thanks Buddy. Gotta few weeks to work with. A midwest tour may be in order. Sorry I didn't stick around Indiana after the central PA gathering.
