Looking for everyones vote for which receiver you think is best for mostly movie and tv watching. under $1000 .. presently looking into, Onkyo 607, 706 Denon 989/2809 Pioneer Elite sc05.. all are in order of cheapest to most expensive.. would like not to spend money just for small features.. I have a very basic set up.. upscaling not important imo.. audio is all I really care about.. I watch tv on an Optoma HD65 100" projector screen. 720p
Fronts Rti a5
Surround Rti a1
Center Csi a6
Sub Velodyne 4000R

I have the Onkyo 607. Had it for two months. So far so good. But further down the line, I will probably upgrade to something with more power. Been looking at the Onkyo 906.

The Pioneer Elite is the flavor of the month.

I knew the Elite would get a lot of votes... I'm not sure if I want to spend that much yet.. I just want to get in the game, and upgrade later when the time arives that I need all the extra bells

Then you end up spending money twice, once to just barely get into the game & then spending even more a 2nd time to get what you really want & need that you could have gotten the first time around. Be patient, spend more money 1 time up front to get a kickass machine that you will be happy with for years & be done with it for a good many years.
Welcome to Club Polk Sonic.
I'd have to give the Elite the nod here as well. But it's really not fair because that Elite's MSRP is in the next category up.
In its price category the Onkyo 607 is the winner. But as Cathy says above....I'd spend more and get it over with!
Elites are nice; with an all around sound that 'most' people find pleasing!

New VSX-1019AH-K but get the VSX-01TXH as it has preout....with the money you save from the sc-05 you can buy amps...its the route I'm taking except I have the 1018 (last year model with pre-out) and I love it for my RTi10's. Runs cooler than Onkyo's too.

As a Pioneer Elite owner I think you will NOT regret it if you go with the SC-05. Spend some time looking around there are good prices around, and now with the new Pioneer Receivers the SC-05 *might* get a markdown....
Call these guys, www.valueelectronics.com I bought my Pioneer Kuro (plasma) from them, great people to deal with, and they price matched the wall mount for the TV.

What's the deal with fronts and upper fronts? 4 pairs of speakers? How are they driven?
Just curious and new...

I think you are refering to the new "reference speakers" Onkyo has encorporated into the TX- SR607. Onkyo is the first company to add Dolby Digital Pro Logic IIZ, which is where the two additional front speakers come in, sometimes refered to as "height speakers" I haven't heard much about the format, but what I have heard doesn't make me want to run out and buy the 607 so I can have it too, lol. Not to mention I don't know if anything is formated that way either. I love Onkyo AVR's and currently run one right now, but sounds like a gimmick to me, just my $.02. Here is a link from Dolby's website explaining the new format that uses the 2 additional speakers.

Edit: I stand corrected just Google imaged the 607 and looking at the rear panel looks like you use the Surr. Back L/R if you are running a 5.1 setup, and there are Zone 2 spring clips if you are running a 7.1 setup.

I guess it's something new they put in. If your watching a movie, say Flyboys, then you can hear the plane go over your head. Takes the place of surround backs.

Takes the place of surround backs.
Actually it is is addition to surround backs. Total of 7 speakers in a 5.1 and 9 speakers in a 7.1. So it is basically a quasi 7.1 or 9.1
