Surprising, isn't it?
Sony STR-DA1500ES stereo receiver (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665896670)

Sony needs to get their act together. I have their latest ES SACD player, 5400ES, and it has XLR outputs. The first thing I checked on this receiver was if it had XLR inputs, and it doesn't. Its the little things that count.

...looks nice, but still not a product for the audiophile. No low impedence drive, limited digital input, no pre-out/main in, apparently no room correction or even remote tone controls (wah!), no sub output, etc. Still, a nice piece for what it is.

I think this receiver, like Pioneer Elite's $200.00 A-35R stereo integrated amp, is marketed as an "accessory" for the company's home theater receivers that are capable of outputting music to a second zone.
Btw, if a receiver have all the features you mentioned, I'd imagine it will retails for more than $500.00.

It is a nice try but I have to agree with some. Not an audiophile grade amp. It looks nice and has a few nice features but is lacking in power and low impedence ability.

Owner's Manual to the DA1500ES (http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=STRDA1500ES) is now online....
Hmmm....detachable power cord

Doubt it can come close to the quality of sound coming out of my feature packed harman/kardon HK 3490. ($289.00 shipped)
Just sayin'.
What's so special about it?

Nothing really. Just surprising Sony is going back to the 2 channel component route.
On the other hand, both Pioneer Elite and Onkyo have introduced new 2 channel gear into their respective lines.

I'm always glad to see any new affordable 2-channel gear. Thanks for posting, Danny! I guess I just always hope it'll be right down my particular alley -not too expensive, but still aimed at the "serious" music lover/audiophile. I guess that's a pretty small sub-set of the market these days.

tell that to the vinyl guys.
tell that to the vinyl guys.
But the vinyl guys would never buy something so pedestrian as a receiver or, for that matter, even anything badged by a large corporation like Sony :p
