Sorry if someone already posted this, but I was just wondering if anyone has heard the new onkyo amp with the elevated speakers. The upper channel I think they are calling it???????

Yes, I think I've recommended it to some users already for its HDMI capabilities.
It's front presence I think? 7.2.

I have not heard the new TX-SR607, but I have "talked" to a guy on here who has one and he seems to enjoy it. As far as I know it is the only AVR on the market that has the ability to utilize the "reference" or "height" speakers you are talking about. Dolby Digital Pro Logic IIz is the codec that uses the speakers and like I said I have not heard it, but I am going to attach a few links that may do a better job of explaing it. Are you looking to buy a 607, or is it more of a curiosity?

If your watching a movie with a lot of airplanes flying around, it sounds pretty good. I just bought the 906 that was for sale on this forum, so If your interested in one, I maybe selling mine.

Yamaha has had these "height" speakers for a while. They call them "presence speakers". Not sure what PLIIZ is calling them, and Dolby may be doing it a little different than Yamaha did, but for the most part Yamaha's format never caught on much, as it really did not add much for the cost and effort of using it.
But there does seem to be more interest and positive posts for the PLIIZ. I just don't know if I would include it on a "must have" shopping list.

^^ That is very true apphd, I just saw that a little while ago. The 607 is Onkyo's first AVR to have the extra speakers.

well i had a 906 and sold it off to someone for a small profit, best AVR i hav ever had but couldnt pass up the offer. I am waiting to see a processor with like a 9.2. I was thinking about getting the 607 just for fun right now but i like standard 7.1. From what i read you can either have 5.2 with height or 7.2 regular but not both.
I have heard wind of a 9.2 so you get "height" speakers and the 4 surrounds, anyone have any links to news about this? I want to take the next step and do a pre with amps, so i think i will be waiting for awhile. I am just going to have to live with my old onk avr for now.

I believe that all of the new Denon AVR's have it too now.

Got to agree with apphd.
Presence speakers...not much more than what Yamaha has had for a while and another so-called must have "feature" from manufacturers who are already 'struggling' to sell in this market.
I don't particularly care if my helicopters are slightly elevated in 'sound', personally.
Also, check out the Denons...in order to accommodate these 2 new presence speakers the AMP sections have not been beefed up...the same amount of POWER is available so that means running a 9.1/.2 set up equals LESS power to the remaining 7 channels!
If you're going to screw with the consumer and add more speakers. BOOST your POWER! Enough said!
Next year? REAR PRESENCE 11.2, then mid-ceiling/floor presence 15.4 (subs in all 4 corners). Then....more egg on our faces!

I guess your right. There will always be something new. You just have to figure out what you can live with out.
