I am currently looking to upgrade my receiver and amp my TSI 500s i just got. This is my first attempt at amping anything other than subs, so i was looking for advice.

My current receiver is a KLH R5100 thats about 9yrs old, and it just doesn't seem to be giving the TSIs the power they want. Its "rated" at 100w a channel, but with how cheap it was, that long ago, i'd be shock if it was running more than ~70w a channel... My thought is to upgrade to a Yamaha RX-V665, run the L/R pre-amp outs to my Crown Straight Line Two preamp, and Sony TA-N511 stereo power amp that currently runs my subs.

I guess my main question is whether this would actually help at all. The Sony is rated at 135w per channel at 8ohms. The TSIs sound amazing on the KLH, but you have to turn it up almost a third more to get the same volume that my 25yr old 8" RCA floor speakers that my parents gave me would run at...Will that 135w dedicated wattage liven up the TSIs?

Thanks for ANY input! And yes, for any of you that lurk on AVS, this was already brought up in the Yamaha 665 thread.

I would look into something a little better and more powerful. The Yamaha receiver with a Adcom, Rotel, Parasound, or Carver amp just to name a few would sound great and have plenty of power for your speakers.

What kind of budget do you have in mind?

Well as of right now i was trying to work with what i have. Have no problem spending the money on a new receiver, since i need one anyway. I also have a 500w Crown Power Line Four, but i needs to be worked on, and i only have one pre-amp. Was going to get a second pre-amp and run the Crown for the subs, since they are 600w rms and they are only getting that 135.

SO idk.. i dont have cash to drop on both a receiver and another amp, maybe i'll get the Crown sorted out to run the TSIs, then re configure the subs? hmm..

While I agree with Leroy about getting a better amp, the amp you have will be better than just the AVR that you are using now. It may be "only" 135W, but as you stated it is atleast double the amount of power they are getting now from your AVR alone. Also keep in mind it isn't just the amount of power the amp is putting out, it is the fact that it is clean, unadulterated power, lol. Much better than that yucky AVR power. Get the better AVR, use the amp you have now and get the other one fixed. Then you can sell them both and get a "better" amp, just my $.02. Welcome to Club Polk.

Thanks for the replies guys! Again i'm trying to expand my knowledge beyond just bass (once had basically 2 12s and 2 15s in my Bedroom.. now down to one 15)

I've thought about selling both, but i need two amps- will always need one for my sub. Anyone have any experience with the Crown Power Line Four? It should be a beast, but it's not Nearly as loud as the Sony i have.. which is why i say it needs to be worked on...
