There was of what appeared to be in very nice condition pair of these speakers on CL today. The location was Stewartstown, PA. I believe that I was the second person to reply to this ad. The first buyer bought them :(. The price was extremely attractive at $200. The ad is now removed from CL. I wonder if one of us Polkies bought them, I hope so. If you read this, please report about them.

eBay may be a possibility, but I tell you one thing, If I got them, I would be enjoying them right now and would not be for sale.

I asked, did you buy these off CL for $200, Seller's response:
"Ya but they are a lot bigger than I thought they were. I had a set of SDA's a few years ago but they were not as big but I loved the sound of them. I thought they were a good buy for what he was asking so I took a chance that if they did not work out for me I could hopefully get most or all of my money back. Thanks"

The seller is full of ****... he knew exactly what he bought. I hope he can turn a dime on them, but at least be honest...

What is that flap above the tweeter?

What is that flap above the tweeter?
The flap was intended as an aerodynamic aid to help high speed handling characteristics at intense volume levels.:D
I have no clue....

The flap looks like the one on the RTA models. I wasn't aware they tried it on SDAs...maybe the original owner robbed a set of 11 or 15TLs for the tweets and kept the flaps .

They called it a diffraction spoiler. Just an (inexpensive) design to prevent the closely located tweeter and midrange driver above it from having undesirable interference. Was part of the original design for the 3.1's, but not something needed on other SDA's.

Those do look like the ones from CL. They even have the white stain on the MW dust covers.
BTW does anyone know what the white stuff is?

I believe they were part of the limited edition Monica Lewinsky signature edition.
Not sure what causes the white residue to form on the MW's. Fairly common, though.

Could it be from too much heat due to driving them too hard. Maybe the heat causes something to break down, causing it to ooze out and on to the dust cap. Then, when it cools, it turns white.

I also contacted the seller via his CL ad. He said the guy was going to pick them up at 6pm and if they didn't sell he would let me know. He emailed me back shortly and said they were gone! Sucks that they were bought by a dolphin.

Nothing to be concerned about. From Polk in a thread a few years ago about cleaning MW drivers:
"The top treatment on the cone is a nitrocellulose lacquer. It coats only the cone. The dust-cap is permeable - it passes some air. I don't suggest cleaning the cone. The collected dust on the cone will not cause a sonic problem. If there is a white residue on them then it maybe "out-gassing" from the cyanoacrylate [CA] glue used to assemble the driver. This can distribute a white participate during curing and can be cleaned off with a brush. You can use a damp cloth or a cloth with some acetone but don't get it on the cone."

So who got them?
Well, I sure didn't. I was the number 2 bidder. I didn't want to spend too much money on these because I really want a pair of SRS-1.2 or SRS-2.3. TL or no TL, doesn't matter.

I thought about it but I didn't feel like driving close to 200 miles one way. I am pretty content with what I have. My SDA 1C's are very similar to the 3.1's, so I didn't pull the trigger. If they were closer maybe.

Well, the seller made a healthy profit... doubled his money basically.
I'm in pretty much the same boat, I'm content with not buying anything bigger than my 1As right now...until I get more space, or sell some speakers :D

How do these "stack up" against the other SDAs with smaller cabinets?(including the SRS2s & 2.3s) I hardly ever see the 3.1s, were not too many produced, or were they unpopular for some reason? This pair is only about an hours drive from me, not that I really need to add to the six pairs of asst. Polks that I've got now. I guess "need" is a relative term where it concerns this "HOBBY"!
The previous statement about the seller being full of $h!t is right on the money. He/she is another speaker squirrel, check out their other items listed!

Glad he didn't part them out and sell it all individually, geez looks like he's a true mad doctor to speakers! I am really curious as to how those sound though, it has a much better user friendly profile than the 1.2 and 2.3. Is it as good of a speaker as the SDA-1C's? Vey curious indeed

I'm sure he would have parted them if he thought they were more valuable dead that alive. I had that very sad realization with my 7B's with peerless tweeters. Parted out, I could get at least $100 based on current eBay prices.

Also curious to know how they compare the the 2.3's, non TL. Would it be worth getting as another pair for a good price?
