I really miss my DirecTV...had to go with Comcast because of trees...new home is surrounded by 30-50 foot elms and the line of sight will only get me basic no HD so........First visit for install was 2 weeks ago. order taker didnt get the correct number of rooms needing cable and internet didnt work..2 days later all rooms hooked up internet signal sucked as it was in the basement of a older plaster walled home and the TV did that tiled pic thing...2 days later new tech spent alot of time all seemed okay.then a ground loop hum from hell..grew louder evertime anything in the home was turned on....and my cable box shorted out its HDMI port....got a new box plugged it in worked for 15 min and the HDMI went out...worked thru optical just not HDMI.....2 days later another tech got all the TVs working but didnt have a clue on how to ground.....called for help and left. Then comcast did a adjustment to improve things LOL tiled picture returned and even worse than before.....internet died....I am sure all the CS folks know my voice by now....so we have a tiled pic, awful humming and no internet............finally yesterday yet another tech shows up....he fixes the TV picture told us the guy adjusted the signal wrong...moved internet box and reran cable, works like a charm and spent alot of time grounding all cables so that there is ZERO noise....got his name and number and slipped him a tip to boot...........kinda like finding a good car mech....all but this guy was from the Geek Squad which must sub thru comcast..these guys were clueless in the cable TV world...........

That sucks. If I ever move somewhere where I can't get DirecTV, I think I'll just throw up an antenna and live with OTA only. Actually, if DirecTV doesn't stop raising their prices, I may just do that anyway. 90% of what I watch is available OTA anyway. The only time I would miss it would be during college football season.

Sounds like par for the course with Comcast. If you get the chance to go with Fios, do it.

I desperately want to switch to DirecTV but cost-wise it's just not worth it because of my lack of Internet options.

I hate comcast, but I am not putting a dish on the roof with cables strewn all over the side of my house. They've talked like they're doing the FIOS, but out here they don't FIOS it from hub to the house.......just to the hub and then coax to the houses, which seems somewhat pointless considering the lag IS the coax...........

I just discontinued my Comcast TV, but kept the internet service. Getting Comcast to actually shut off my cable TV was a nightmare. They just didn't want to do it, and wanting to charge me $39.95 for a new remote to replace my 6+ yr old remote that many of the buttons wouldn't work on was the last straw.

I now have a Roku box and can watch anything in my Netflix or Amazon instant queues whenever I want. Life is good!

All Fios installs use existing coax from hub to house as far as i know. I have it and it works great. When we had comcast the quality of the picture was crappy at best - now at least the standard def. channels are watchable.

My Fios runs all the way up to the box on my house then coax into the house. I switched from Comcast to Fios back in March and haven't looked back.

Doug, did they raise the internet service price after you discontinued the TV? They did that to me several years ago. Went to Direct TV and DSL.

+ 1 to the Roku! Thanks Blake!

curious gents, can you subscribe to FIOS just for the internet?

I have DirecTV and Verizon DSL. Very happy with DTV, so has no need for FIOS TV.

My internet went up $10 per month because I don't have the multiple service discount anymore. So I spend $10 more per month to save $70 per month.

That's crazy. At any point you can bring your box/remote to your local cable office, tell them it's not working, and they give you a new one right there and then, free. Charging for a remote??? Never heard of such as thing.

Indeed you can, but usually there are discounts for bundling services so you may pay more for the internet alone than you would if it were bundled with TV.

In my area, they don't even OFFER TV, just internet and phone service. Some kind of licensing deal with Comcast?

Yes you can. My FIOS is fiber to the house but I only use their internet. Once they get a DVR with more storage or allow an external HDD I will go to their TV as it has a higher scan rate.

The Comcast mgr I last spoke to admitted that there had been a change in policy and it was at the CSR's descretion, and that it should of never been presented to me that way. Too little, too late at that point. The mgr was actually very much customer focused and understood that it was basically that I wasn't getting my $80 per month in value out of their service.

Wow, that seems a little high for 1.5. I have cable Internet (also over-priced) but have quite a few customers with AT&T 1.5 service and it's $25 with no contracts, discounts, etc. Of course they preface everything with "in your area" so maybe it's different where you are. I'm not a big fan of AT&T having dumped them long ago but if they wire my neighborhood for fios I'll take another look.

Thanks for the info, guys. I checked with FIOS and it is still NOT available in my area. I guess it's a moot point at this time.
